The wild west, although in reality it did not exist for very long. It has become very ingrained in popular entertainment. While not as popular as it once was, there have over the years been many many movies and TV shows set in the wild west. On the face of it, it is a setting perfect for gaming. Somehow though the good wild west games (board and video) have been a bit scarce.

So I thought how about a list of the best and not so best wild west themed games. please add your own favourites and comments. maybe there is a wild west game just waiting for you to play it.

Back in the day when I bought nearly anything Avalon Hill made, this was my first Cowboy game. And I loved it, played it a lot.

Bought it into my games group a couple of months ago and it did not seem as good as I remember it. Components were not as good as you would expect in a modern game. The rule book was typical Avalon Hill legal manual and the game play seemed a bit 'clunky'.

Love to see a revised version though with Fantasy Flight type miniatures, would be awesome.

My second favourite CCG. (First was Legend of the 5 Rings)

Welcome to the wierd west. Great setting, take charge of an outfit and try to control a piece of the wild west. I love the gun fighting. Every card has a playing card rank on it (2 spades, 5 hearts etc) and to fight you play a hand of poker.

From my first cowboy game to my latest. A return to the deadlands world, this time in a board game.

The game is a lot of fun, but the rule book lets it down badly. I have played it twice and both times we came across so many things that were either not in the rule book or explained really badly. Expect lots of house rules with this one.

Or Martin Wallace does a cowboy game. Not quite the masterpiece you might expect, but better than some people give it credit for.

Again would benifit from an update and better components, but worth checking out.

Bang! has to be the one game I keep finding ways to weasel into geeklists..

It's a gun slingin' card game of hidden identity and roudy characters. You essentially take turns drawing from a stack of cards which can be anything from a barrel (for cover), a rifle (about 5 or more different guns), or cards that do all sorts of interesting things like dynamite, which gets passed around until it blows up randomly.

One of the more interesting rules is the influence of your own seating arrangement and how it determines the "range" of your friends or foes. Initially, most players can only shoot the players directly to his left or right (range of 1), but with the acquisition of better weapons and accessories, you can increase your range and possibly even put more distance between you and your neighbors.

Lastly, every character has one of 4 roles: the Sheriff, Deputy, Outlaw, and Renegade. It's the Sheriff's responsibility to dispatch the Outlaws and Renegades; the Deputy can only win if the Sheriff survives; Outlaws win by taking out the Sheriff, and the Renegade only wins if he's the last person standing. The trick is no one knows who anyone is except for the Sheriff who is revealed before the game begins.

This was Nova's picture book system (best known from their Ace of Aces WWI air combat game), transposed to good guys and bad guys skulking around a building. Like Ace of Aces, this game was even more fun if you had more than one set of the books.

This is perhaps not known, as it is a local czech game, made by an independent publisher.

However it has an english translation (wink wink!) done for some time already and rules are uploaded.

It is a nice and thematic game about outlaws doing some bank robberies, trainjobs, freeing comrades from prison and above all - making money.

They have to prepare their jobs first and once they have enough resources for it, they can execute them. But alas! They might encounter an opponent trying to do the same train! Then they have a shootout and who stands, gets a chance to do the robbing.

What is quite nice is the actual Shootout - you throw tokens on a small bullseye target and who is the closest to the center, wins the duel

I say it is a nice game worth trying out!

Bruno Cathala's very first game. It's a Western themed card game, where you earn points for building the most ranges, having the most cattle, cowboys, and money. The cards have CCG-like abilities. With a few rules tweaks (e.g. weakening the Mayor card, amount of starting cards, and improved scoring), the gameplay is excellent. The theme is solid and fun, and I like the fact that the timing of the game end (money or cards run out) is somewhat unpredictable. The card line and action point system is somewhat similar to Through the Ages. Very high player interaction - some "Take That" elements and leader bashing that not everyone will like, but the strong theme makes up for that in my view. Great artwork too. There is luck of the draw, so don't take it too seriously and get stuck in analyzing your position, best enjoyed when played fairly quickly. Especially shines for people familiar with the game and cards, and more than two players.

Braggadocio is an improv-type game where eveyone acts the part of a fictious character that they make up with any wild west character voice that you wish to use... You tell grand stories of your exploits while working in topic tiles that are given to you. The players all vote with their "gold" chips to decide who the best actor was.

Board Game: Stetsons & Sixguns
What’s been missing in every wild-west shootout game you’ve ever played? That’s right: you don’t get to point guns at one another. Well, now you can!

Stetsons & Sixguns is a fast-paced card game played over 8 rounds. Channelling iconic characters from classic Western adventures, 2-8 players play Action Cards and point toy guns at one another as they compete to become the most notorious gunslinger in town.
