Heaps of people (did someone get a count). All entrance money went towards the bushfire appeal for Toodyay.

Heaps of games offered at a silent auction - someone have a number? Once again, proceeds to the appeal.

And, of course, heaps of good games played.

Helen and Neil and ?? and her mum tried this for their first time. Apart from two misreadings of the rules by Neil (which were quickly sorted out), the play proceeded smoothly. Helen was thwarted every time she was close to gaining the animals in a paddock, so there was great rejoicing when she was finally successful. ?? won comfortably, followed by Neil and the other two.

Katie and JB explained this game to Helen and Neil. Katie then eschewed greed and violence, and grabbed as many fishermen as she could. This feeding frenzy led to chronic oversupply and many victory points, which resulted in a comfortable victory, with Neil coming second (in spite of his much more balanced approach ).

Aidden and his friend took to this, with the half the joy (and nearly half the game time) spent on building the map and picking the respective armies - a conglomorate of superheroes, monsters, and most everything else that came to hand from newly received Christmas presents.

Unfortunately, an extremely liberal interpretation of the rules, tempered by a 9 year old's application of the well known but largely unproven "make it up as you go along" strategy, meant the game held little interest for resolution by both proponents, and it was soon abandoned to the more enforeceable and better structured enterprise of growing beans.

Rescued Stephen and his partner (sorry, name eludes me) and taught them this after a quick rules refresh for myself.

This game is emminently simple, fast, friendly and fun... if you've never tried it I would thoroughly recommend the 30 minutes investment it would take to give it a try.

I will note that I much prefer the original edition (where the names of the beans are marked on every card) over the Fan Edition (in which you need to learn all the bean icons in order to play smoothly).

Bought this off a guy in Sydney who was selling off his collection, and really glad I did. Have brought it out maybe 5 times, and everyone who has played it has loved it.

I find it thematically strong and very engaging, quickly paced, interactive without being cut-throat, and involved enough to be interesting but simple enough to be completely understood by the end of the first round.

The one downer: apparently in the last round I bought two assets Gracie needed to complete her event. She claims I didn't need them and did it to spite her (false) and that she came last because of it (true).

I won with 105 spectators attending my stunning performance of Neptune's Fury, I think about 20 ahead of the drab and dreary event of my closest rival.

But it's a week on, and I am STILL hearing about that horse and torch I nabbed...

The kids loved this; even some of the adults seemed to. But there's no strategy here - it's press your luck and hope for the best. I can see how some would find it fun, but it doesn't interest me.

Interestingly, I found much the same thing when we borrowed Tim's copy of Adventurers. I found the randomness disheartening, but both Gracie and Aidden enjoyed that too.

Played 1 game of Dominion with Simon, Paul and Richard. My copy of the game is in German... but I think we memorised the cards anyway due to the pictures being the same as the English version. The German text on the cards then became somewhat comprehensible! Such an addictive game regardless of language!

I brought along my copy of Notre Dame... I had ordered it ages ago on a whim because I thought the shape of the board was unusual, but had never got a chance to play it until the January WABA. Played a 4 player game with Billy, Simon and Paul.

Billy had played Notre Dame before, so he taught us the rules. (Thanks again for your help!) Interesting game with a fine balance of gaining money, victory points and trying not to let the rats overwhelm your part of the city with the black plague. I think I was the only person who found Notre Dame stressful to play because of those stupid rats!

Surprisingly quick to play, and yes, the board was very nice to look at!

Player with Peter, Jarrad and Mike?

Steady Pete, who took the Dungeon route, won convincingly.

Mike took the disposable character route - they died like flies.

Thought this was a really good game but decided during the game it was a stupid one and lost. Billy won.

Richard ran three of us through this.

Hong the russian spy was devastating, stealing the lives of many germans whilst the oher two of us sort the necessary items to complete our mission.

We made it out of the door with only one minute to spare, and only through the suicide of our esteeemed leader, who just wasn't going to make it.

This was made up of entry fees, donations, proceeds from the quiet auction plus a WABA contribution to take it to $500.

I played this game at least twice with Roger, Owen and someone else (yes, I'm terrible at remembering names). It's a quick game to learn and not over complicated to play, making it a good 'filler' type game. For those who don't know, players try create a path to a treasure using cards. One or more players may be a saboteur secretly trying to stop the others.

Roger, Owen and the same someone else from Saboteur learnt Dragon Parade. This game combines an element of prediction based on what card you hold and strategy in token placement (just reading that again makes me realise that it probably makes no sense to people!). This is an easy game to learn but it is a bit too random for my liking.

I played this with Roger, the same the same someone else from Saboteur, Dragon Parade and Stone Age and a different someone who I also can't remember the name of.

This is an interesting game based on the bubble and burst of tulips as occured in history. In terms of game play, you try to buy tulips low and sell as the price rises before the price crashes. Players have an ability to increase or decrease the price through a kind of auction phase. This game which would work very well as an adjunct of a history lesson.

In terms of game play, there are some interest strategical points that can be explored during the game. The three other players worked well to ensure I didn't win by forcing the price down of orange tulips that I had stockplied. One major complaint I have is of very similar purple and blue colours (this has been noted by the game producer).

Aussie 550 and I ran through the first scenario. It was my first game, but Aussie was merciless, mowing down my poorly trained militia without blinking. Nevertheless, my patriotic heroes of the Motherland struck back. A good contest. I like this game!

Some hardcore gaming was required just to demonstrate that WABA is more than 'Euro-softies'. devil
