Oh, the cult of the new. The hot. Mr Barling got it on his current cartoon ...
From gallery of Aldie

As a matter of fact, new game designs are usually more probably to our taste than "vintage", outmoded stuff. They bring you the newest materials, "state of the art" graphic design, the "post-modern" touch of cleverly interwoven mechanisms - and they are cool right now. In one word: hot.

Then, of course, there are the old ones, the ones you know and love for years and years, decades, centuries, aeons. Your "ten"s for all time.

And then there are:
Games you discovered when they were already "outdated". You were sceptical because of their age, eventually got them (or a chance to play) and thought: "Hey, WHAT A GREAT GAME! Though it is published ten years ago and not too many know about it at all!"
This is a list about these games.

Now, feel free to add!
Show us your "new old ones", gems from the past not known to many, but worth trying! Do the anti-hype, tell us a story, create a buzz for the "old"!

1993

The game that inspired me to this list (besides the cartoon).

I stumbled upon this two years or so ago, never had a chance to get it, and then, the price tag was a bit high. I asked some users owning this about it and their replies made me to get this at "Troll and Toad" for a lot of Euros in Summer 2009. It was complete and in fine condition, but didn`t hit the table for months.

Board Game: Dinosaur Chess

Winning position for red (see image comment for details)

And then, I played it with my 13-year old son.
Fantastic. Simple, intuitive rules, high complex performance. Chess on shifting continents! Two dice for randomness (one for the continent, one for where to drift it), but overall much more strategy and tactics.

If you find a copy - GET IT.

Edit: I was looking for the designer, "playitsam" found him, and now there is another thread abot that (maybe you can get a new copy by the designer!):

A completely forgotten game from 1892, a favourite pastime of the last Tsar`s daughter Anastasia at the age of 14.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Duchess_Anastasia_Nikolae...

I did some research in summer 2009 in the British Library in London and copied the original rules.

Board Game: Colorito

DIY-copy of the game in play

It is a great abstract with each player playing two colours and numered pieces crossing the board by moving or jumping, but always ending on a space of their own colour (or white).

It perfectly fits the bill "explained in 2 minutes, but hard to master".

Okay, it is already three years ago, that I discovered it, but it is still a surprise to me, how well this one from 1993 is working.

Board Game: Terrain Vague

Zero luck, wargame-like fun, changing terrain with wheelbarrows, area control with slingshots, hard decisions all the time, confrontative, funny, great art by Jacques Tardi - what`s not to like?

Can you resist these "big brothers / sister"?

Well, here I go again.

1979
A 2-player wargamish fun. Incredibly thematic: you can rob travellers, marry Lady Marion, raid the Sheriff's fortune, participate in a archery contest or battle Little John for his help. Probably my best 2-player-only game.

I remember losing in a very cinematic way. I had just married Robin with Marion (you have to join them, Friar Tuck and Dale in the same place), and I'ld only have to wait for King Richard to appear. But the Sheriff outmaneuvered me brilliantly, charging into the wedding location, capturing lady Marion, killing Friar Tuck and Dale, and hanged Robin Hood two turns later. Talk about spoiling the party.

The original game looks like this
Board Game: The Legend of Robin Hood

But the copy I have is the pnp redesign by UniversalHead.
Board Game: The Legend of Robin Hood

Board Game: The Legend of Robin Hood

And it's not hard to construct at all, for a pnp game.

Just learned this 1991 game this summer and really enjoyed it.

I thought the theme (i.e., submarine-centric naval combat) came through very well and the gameplay had a great tension about it. The game comes with a lot of scenario options, so the replayability is quite good.

Was fortunate to find an eBay copy (with the cards still in shrink) for a reasonable price. Taught my 9 year-old how to play and we've had a great time with this game since then.

An older Knizia game from 1996 that I recently discovered and which has stood up very well to the test of time. It also feels surprisingly different from most of his other games, which is a welcome change of pace. I tried it for the first time recently and we actually opted to play it twice back-to-back because everyone enjoyed it so much. It felt a bit like Liar's Dice in that players are dealt a hand of cards depicting various goods (e.g., newspapers, umbrellas), and then players gamble on how many of those goods they think are held by all of the players combined. After each bid you have to reveal a couple cards from your hand, so the picture of what is out there slowly becomes clearer. The more risky your bid, the bigger the payoff. It's a nicely designed system, and makes me nostalgic for the Knizia of yore who designed clever stand-alone games with neat mechanics that just worked well and were fun to explore. Members Only feels like a classic Knizia game from the days when he was giving us great games like Through the Desert, Tigris & Euphrates, and Ra; I only wish I'd discovered it earlier. It's a shame that this game isn't more widely known and appreciated. The long-delayed Mayfair reprint (renamed Glenn's Gallery) may some day rectify that if it ever sees the light of day.

A fantastic game by Karl-Heinz Schmiel from 1991. The theme of being a newspaper editor is an odd one and certainly stands out from the traditional themes of Egypt, the Renaissance, and the Far East, among others. However, the theme fits perfectly with the mechanics of the game, as it's truly a game of newspaper layout. There's definitely an interesting spatial element as you try to best position the headlines and corresponding stories in your newspaper, including your valuable front page above-the-fold section. There's definitely some vicious parts of this game as your place advertisements in your opponents' newspapers that waste space and compete to run the largest stories in various headlines and various newspaper sections, such as sports or weather. It's really a blast to play and stands out as unlike any other board game you likely own or have played.

I came upon this game in a trade awhile back. Though I'd heard some positive things about it, I really didn't know what to expect. When I played it for the first time I found the game to be an entertaining and very strategic auction game loaded with bluffing. It made me laugh when someone promised a big payout and handed over nothing but zeros! The game may not seem ground-breaking or unique in this day and age, but when it was first published (25 years ago) I doubt there was anything quite like it. I'm still trying to catch up on older games that I missed before I came to BGG, and it's games like this that get me excited for what I might discover.

I wouldn't say that I was skeptical, but I've been eager to play for a long time. Sure, it has its flaws. Some of the rules sections are pretty opaque, and the preponderance of earth tones among the counters makes it a little dull to look at. Nonetheless, it's fast, fun, and suspenseful. You feel as though you're in a gunfight, and the game rewards smart play.

Got a chance to play this a few months ago and it's awesome! A post-apocalyptic road combat/racing type game with simple rules, a lot of fun, and great art/pieces. One of the coolest rules is that when someone drives off of the end of the board, the last board section is cleared and connected to the front section; any cars still on the last section are left behind and out of the game!

Played this earlier this year. It's a fun, yet brutal, dungeon crawl where you try to plunder the dragon's lair and get out before night falls and you get eaten by a grue. Short, fun, and very deadly.

Rumor is that FFG has plans/permission to publish a new addition.

Gammarauders from 1987

Not only was Settlers not the first game with random hex set up, it didn't even invent the ingenious method of using the probability distribution of rolling two dice to produce goods.

Gamarauders is strongly influenced by Dune with the main difference being that it's more fun to play, at least for the first two hours. After that it can bog down.

I have yet to play anything like it, though Monsterpocalypse provides some of the same vibe.

I like it because it encourages longer words rather than short, obscure ones (lets me "stretch out"), and it has the added strategy of the color bonus.

I thought about going with 1954's Bali, which I only learned a year and a half ago. But instead, I went with this jewel of a word game that you can print and play from stuff right here. Way better than Jotto, from which it is no doubt derived.

Some call this "dice in the pacific" or deride it for all of the dice rolling. It is very rare that the dice actually determine the outcome of the game. In this case, there is so much dice rolling that the odds are sure to be in balance.

I love the tension of worrying whether I can protect Pearl Harbor and the US Mandate from a determined IJN attempt to take them both. I also love being the IJN and trying to take both. Other strategies offer their own level of tension to the game.

I would nearly always be willing to play this "old" game even though it can take 3 or more hours.

One of my friends owns an antique store. He periodically picks up old games like this one. We played this in the middle of his store one day - using lead soldiers for the couple missing pieces. I think his version is from around 1920-1940 and has wooden pawns (The one pictured is from 1958).

The most recent version is called "Inside Moves".

Re-discovered this game online last fall, and made a custom board, so we could play at home, too.
Ancient (60 years), and great fun!!!
