I am a very committed gamer and will find any excuse to get in a game or three. My daughter has recently hit that magical age of three. Part of this marvellous occurence is that she is starting to show interest in my games collection and even starting to ask how they work. Obviously the oligatory 'playing with components' also is happening in full swing.

It is getting to the point where I am seriously considering buying some games with the express goal of gaming with my daughter, and also involving my son in a very limited capacity (he is 2).

I'm asking you, my fellow geeks to suggest some quality games that would be suitable for children 6 and under. The more the merrier. Help me to indoctrinate my children into our wonderful hobby.

I would appreciate it if you include an explanation with your contribution.

Also, for bonus points, add games that are suitable for children AND the right group of child-like adults.

The winning item will be the one that tips me over the edge to purchase my first game for my daughter. If this should happen, there will be GG on offer.

Now... empower me to brainwash my kids! MWA HA HA HA!!! *evil snicker*

I like this one - playing it with my son. He got it when her was two years old. Learning the colors, having fun ripping daddy and throwing dice - what more could a two year ask for (beside cookies and milk).

You have to roll a die, if it is a color take the matching fruit; if it is a basket take two fruits of your choice, if it is the raven add a part of the raven puzzle. If the raven is completed before the fruits are in, the players loose the game (yes, it is co-op). So all of the players win or loose.

Comment on it like "oh, no, the raven again, we'll loose", do some funny noises and faces and even the little one will like it. Another hint: Don't try strategies like: "Don't take the last two apples while we have more cherries left" (always have to remind myself of this but I assume my son knows he can drive me nuts with this because he grins from one ear to the other while doing it).

This one is a hit with the young ones at the game days at our local public library. Think dexterity game similar to the old triangular folded paper football game. And as dexterity games go, it's WAY cheaper than investing in, say, PitchCar Mini.

My best friend's son was playing this game with us before he turned three years old. Sure, he wasn't really into the whole scoring thing, but he sure did enjoy sorting the colors and flicking the sliders!

Every time I see him, he asks me if I want to play a game--he got his own copy for his 3rd birthday. How can I resist?

I got this for my four year old daughter for Christmas. She calls it the "horsey game". She loves the components; she can happily spend several minutes picking the right horse and rider for herself, for me, and anyone else who plays. She also likes setting up the "jumping gates" and is pretty good at doing that too.

Actually playing the game takes a little patience. We change the rules thanks to a suggestion I read somewhere here, by simply shuffling the cards and drawing randomly to move, although we do discard so all the cards still need to be used once before they can be used again.

Game time is very quick, maybe 10 minutes, but there's usually a "let's play again" involved.

The main negative for me is she sometimes inadvertently starts to bend the cards a bit, but so far I've kept her from causing damage to them.

I've devised a "dumbed down" version of this to play with my son (who turned 4 a month ago). He seems to like it, and actually asks to play it on occasion. It's been fun watching him over the course of a few games kinda figure out how to get the hallways to do what he wants.

In the normal game, each player has a lot of goals, and they must be achieved in order, without knowing what the next goal is to be. In our little-kid friendly version, we each have four goals, which we can achieve in any order.

So this game is a good one to "grow" with. As an added bonus, it almost feels like a dungeon-crawl game... hehehe... great for brainwashing the little ones!

They're probably still a bit too young for this on, but a good choice to get them to the next level. It scales very good as well. They youngest kids have fun just laying out the puzzle, while older kids start to develop some strategy.

I don't have kids, but I've enjoyed playing this little game with magnets. Roll a die, then place one of your magnets on a snake of the color shown by the die. If your magnet is too close to another one, they snap together in a buzzing rattle. I bet kids will love it.

I have the knock-off version of this: Tumbling Tower.

Started playing it with my son when he was two, and he loved it. Of course I didn't strictly enforce the "one hand only" rule.

Not only is it a great "gateway game" for the little ones, it can also help develop those hand/eye co-ordination skills, and also a bit of logical-thinking/problem-solving skills! What a nefarious combo! hehehe

It should be a great game for a "mixed audience" of 2-something and 3-something year olds!

This has been a hit with every kid (and most adults) we've tried it with.

The good thing about it is that children's short term memory tends to be a little better than adults so you don't have to 'play down' to their level.

The expansion isn't necessary but does give you the pieces for another two players.

Ladybugs exchange spots to get ready for the party. We had hours of fun with this.

My children once told a gullible babysitter this game was OK to play outside (they only managed to lose one piece).

My kids are 10 and 8 now, and we don't play it anymore, but no one wants to sell it because of all the good times we had playing it.

I know this will sound funny, but let me tell the story to fill in the details. These concepts could well apply to most any game.

I have 2 sons now aged 20 and 21. I am and have always been an avid gamer. My wife is competitive and likes to game as well. We have played games with the boys since before they could walk.

We have an old deck of Old Maid cards. By the age of 4, they thought this was a lame game as there was no strategy - at least they thought there was no strategy.

First, they had to learn to keep a straight face when receiving or giving the Old Maid. It is amazing how much thought that adds to the game. For instance, I would draw the Old Maid out of one of their hands and they would giggle. Then it was time for the other to draw a card out of my hand. Then he had to "worry" about drawing the Old Maid.

I would then shuffle my hand and select one of the cards to be physically higher in the fan so that it stuck out. Was it the Old Maid or not? Oh my, this added a tremendous level of risk and decision making to the venture.

They still talk about the Old Maid wars when home from college when we reminisce about the past. They now understand that the goal was to think and to take calculated risks. I have watched each of them play games with much younger cousins or kids of friends. They now employ similar tactics.

Thanks for letting me share a fun memory.

Pass it on!

I played this game with a group of friends in my same age group (20-35) and one of their kids, who I believe is 4-5. The game is very simple and keeps kids interested because everyone has to make animal sounds. The game teaches memory (because you have to remember people's secret animals to make that sound), but for younger children, you could easily have all of the animals available to see for the whole game. Also, the older ones thought this would be an excellent drinking game for a different time (if you like that kinda thing).

I've only got 11 recorded plays of this, but our son was in love with this game while I wasn't recording plays. If I haven't played this 100 times with him, I'd be shocked.
Very simple rules (we use the Egyptian style http://www.centralconnector.com/GAMES/mancala.html ) and it allows for development of counting and estimating, ability to prioritize moves (if multiple moves will give you an extra turn, you want to do the one closest to your mancala), and overall strategy. This one also has the added bonus of being easily available and quite cheap.
One bit of advice: get a set with the glass beads instead of stones. The stones tend to vary in size and make it difficult to count and to handle.

A push-your-luck roll-and-move game. You control a group of mice trying to get further and further to gain bigger and bigger cheese rewards, all while being pursued by a cat. The fun, shared tension as the cat closes in can make this enjoyable for the grown-ups too. (Not that I'd play it with other adults, but still a fun game.)

The goal here is to get all four pieces--bed, picture, lamp, teddy bear--for your puzzle. If you draw a piece you already have, you give it to someone who needs it. If you reach into the bag, feel around for a piece you still need, and come up with a monster instead, everyone shouts the game's name, and you throw the piece into the box. Monsters aren't so scary after all, are they?

This one doesn't come out at big-folk-only get-togethers, but it has lots for the wee ones.
