Impulse:
In December, 2009, I had pretty major surgery that left me with a lot of free time at home recovering. I thought it might be fun to make some geeklists to pass the time. My first idea was a knock-out tournament pitting designer vs. designer to celebrate the great minds behind the most popular games on BGG. I originally planned on calling it the Designer Superbowl as I was going to run it during the NFL playoffs.

Approval:
I didn't want to step on any toes, so I began discussing a complimentary tournament to Geek Madness with ColtsFan76 and Sky Knight X. They supported the idea, so I proceeded. But how to rank the designers?

Method:
Ranking designers is both a pile of work, and something that no one seems to agree on. After considering some of my own ranking ideas, I remembered that this controversial job is already being done by Tom Vasel in his annual stat list. Tom agreed to share his numbers, and for better or worse, they provided the framework for the tournament. In round 1, Tom seeded 64 designers according to the average rating of all their games, and we were off to the races.

Timing:
Early 2010 featured a lot of knock-out tournaments on the geek. From Gateway Ameritrash of the Decade to Best Animal Game, there were tournaments covering every conceivable and inconceivable theme. If I could do it again, I would have postponed the tournament until later in the year, so that, hopefully, the idea would have seemed a bit fresher. ColtsFan76 had originally suggested running this tournament during or immediately after Geek Madness to increase exposure. Perhaps that will happen next year.

Final Thoughts:
Was the tournament a success? 17,000 votes is pretty impressive from where I'm sitting. However, there was quite a drop-off in voters for the final two rounds. Starting each round on a Friday seemed to be a bit hit and miss.

For the most part, I think the results validated Tom's ranking method; six of the final eight designers were seeded accordingly. Personally, I like that two designers seeded in the 30s were able to "sneak" into the quarterfinals - and one went on to win the whole thing (though admittedly, these weren't exactly underdogs).

Popular or not, I like the idea of a designer vs. designer tournament, and I plan to run it again next year. I think I'll just call it The Derk Cup to keep the title short and snappy.

Thanks to everyone who voted. Most of all, thanks to all the designers, whether they made the top 64 list or not, for providing us with this hobby.
