Hi folks.

Early March means it's time to gear up and get ready for a trip to BorderCon again.

We had a breakthrough turnout last year with some 60-70 unique gamers attending, which included approximately 30 interstate travelers.

This year we hope to grow those numbers and hope to have 80 odd gamers enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of the Con on the Border.

I learnt a few things from last year so hopefully I have a few more loose ends tied up this year and the organisation is smooth.

So what is BorderCon and why should you attend?

What is BorderCon?

BorderCon is 4 days of pure gaming heaven. No major tournaments or wall to wall special events means that the focus is on relaxed social gaming, making new friends and catching up with old ones.

It's that simple. We encourage everyone to bring a box of their favourite games and we usually have well over 100 different titles to choose from.

When is BorderCon?

BorderCon is held over the Queen's Birthday Long Weekend in June.

This year the event runs from Friday the 11th of June to Monday the 14th of June.

Doors open at 5pm on the Friday night and close around 2pm on the Monday. Both days of the weekend start at around 9am and we close some time over midnight when we can no longer physically turn over cards or advance our marker on the score track.

Where is BorderCon located?

BorderCon is held in Albury, NSW. You can find us here -

http://www.whereis.com/nsw/albury?id=3C8A4E66FBD96C

We are neatly located in a rather central position between Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra.

Who Runs BorderCon?

BorderCon is run by the local gaming club, Border Games Albury Wodonga. We have some 40 odd members but they are not all board game players. Our club also has a Minitaures arm, Role-playing arm and a CCG arm.

That said, BorderCon is our annual Board Game event, so no need to worry about those other elements infringing on space.

Border Games pays for the venue, so there is no cost to enter the Con. That's our gift to you for traveling and supporting our event.

What is the Venue?

We have been hosted for years now by the Hume Inn in Albury. They are not the Ritz of hotels but they have looked after us well for years and they do the job for a reasonable price.

BorderCon takes place in their function room, which means that gamers staying at the hotel can game till they drop and then drag themselves the 15 metres required to reach their room. Sweeeeet!

More details in the next entry for the Hume Inn.

As I said before, the Hume Inn is not the Ritz, but it has supported us since the first days of the Australian Games Expo and as such it does feel like our own Geek space.

It comfortably holds 100 so the inside gaming is pretty comfortable.

There are several big events in town over the long weekend so I strongly recommend that you book ASAP.

You can catch them on the following -

Ph - (02) 6021 2733

Email - enquires@humeinn.com.au

Website - http://www.humeinn.com.au/

Kevin the owner is currently running the place. Be sure to let them know the reason for your stay as that kind of feedback helps us in the years ahead.

The following info was accurate as of the turn of the year -

Single - $80 per night includes Continental Breakfast

Double - $90 per night includes Continental Breakfast

Twin Room -$100 per night includes Continental Breakfast

Deluxe Room - $90 per night includes Continental Breakfast

Family Room/Units - $120-$140 per night includes Continental Breakfast

Spa Suite - $120 per night includes Continental Breakfast

Extra Person - $10

Surcharge - $10 (Public Holidays)

These rates come straight from the website as of tonight.

Kevin is the owner at present. Please let him know that you are coming for the Gaming as the feedback never hurts our cause.

They have renovated the upstairs fridges over Christmas, which means we can buy alcohol downstairs in larger amounts and store it in the fridges upstairs. YAY!

They are not licensed for BYO however.

If you drop me a personal Geekmail regarding what you like to drink, Kevin will try to get it in (if they don't already have it). They currently offer VB and Carlton Draught, Hanhn and Cascade Light, Bicardi and Vodka Cruisers and Jim Beam/Southern Comfort pre-mixed cans.

This year I am proud to announce our first real Con Special. Each year I would like BorderCon to host a 'Designers Corner', to help budding Aussie designers get a chance to spruik their wares and any prototypes they are working on as well as allow our attendees to meet this cool people, ask them questions about their games and perhaps to play any prototypes that the designers may be working on.

This year I am proud to announce that Phil Harding (Sydney) and Peter Hawes (Queensland) have accepted invitations to attend BorderCon 2010.

Phil from Adventureland Games has a few great titles under his belt like Archaeology (picked up by Z-Man), Cannonball Colony and the out soon Flichochet! Exactly what he will be bringing is a closely guarded secret.

Peter Hawes has designed games such as Colonial Diplomacy and Heads of State. His latest design is Wars of the Roses: Lancaster v York, which is being published by Z-Man Games. Our own Ben Nelson was one of the artists that worked on the game. I recall Peter having a Dinosaur prototype at CanCon this year and that may make an appearance at BorderCon.

The Designers Corner will run from 11-1 on the Sunday morning and will feature the designers games and any prototypes they would like to get played and receive feedback on. Hopefully with a set time for this event, they can enjoy the rest of the Con just like the rest of us, with a few relaxing games.

I'm hoping that this idea will be appealing.

Thanks to the hard work of one Pyrate - David Cox - his Trade Winds of goodness will again bring us a Math Trade prior to BorderCon.

Details can be found here -

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/498742/math-trade-may-20...

This is not necessarily linked directly to BorderCon (anyone in Oz is open to get involved), but if you are attending it is mighty handy to save a few bucks and deliver your trades in person.

We had quite a few trades go down at BorderCon last year and it is another great reason to coast down the highway and make the trip.

Math Trades are cool - go get involved.

One of the great things about BorderCon is that people genuinely want to get to know each other better.

The Saturday Night Dinner Meal has been great for this as it gets our heads out of rule books for a few minutes and as the conversation unfolds, we get to learn things about each other that we never expected.

If there are no major objections I will go ahead and book Taco Bills again for the Saturday Night. (6:30pm). That gets us back to the gaming room by about 8:30-9pm.

Let me know if you are coming via a comment for this entry or a Geekmail so I can get a handle on numbers and make a booking. We had over 30 last year.

Howl insults at me if Taco Bills has had its day.

In terms of other events, we wanted to keep it light this year - so no mini tourneys of any kind.

That said I will set up a dexterity corner with Crokinole, Carrom, Tumblin' Dice and PitchCar. These are always great when the brain matter is weary.

The local yockles are die hard Formula De fans and insist on a race. It will be held at 12pm on the Saturday and is a great way to meet people if you are new to the event or our hobby. We will be running the Chicago Street Circuit Track, which features a jump and a 2-way corner where collisions are possible. I may be donning a special outfit for this. whistle

I am also open to the idea of a BorderCon Poker Event (Teax Hold'em) for late Saturday night if there is enough interest. Let me know if you are interested and should numbers be sufficient we will get a BorderCon Trophy put together.

BorderCon is also about giving back to our community and each year we have a charity event.

I have another great list of Industry sponsors again this year (Mind Games Albury, Games Paradise, Unhlafbricking Games and hopefully Mil Sims) that are donating games to a charity raffle. Tickets are only $5 and we hope that with the free entry, people will again buy loads of tickets.

This year all money raised from the raffle will be going to a local family - the Wallaces. Their 13 year old daughter Imogen was struck down with Bone Cancer at the end of 2009. I taught Imogen only 3 years ago and she was an amazing student and person to boot. The medical costs and travel costs to Melbourne are enormous so I think they are a great cause for BorderCon this year.

Amazingly when I called to discuss the idea and make sure they were happy for me to do this, Imogen's Mum thanked me but said she couldn't take the money directly as they had already received so much help from the community. Instead she has asked if the money could go to a volunteer agency that has helped them in their many hours of need.

How cool is that? Of course I agreed. I think it is likely to be the newly opened Ronald McDonald House in Wodonga as they (both locally and in Melbourne) have been invaluable to Imogen and her family.

Last year we raised $1,100 and I hope we can match or better that this year!

Usually we use this Item to wax lyrical about all the games we'd like to bring, see and play.

But it is just too early for that kind of talk. Heck we haven't even bought half the games we are looking forward to playing?

I will post another Geek List closer to the big event so we can get excited.

One final BorderCon plug though is that if you like playing longer games, BorderCon has all the time in the world for that. I'd be happy to get a game or two of Descent in (one of the expansions perhaps) for example.

So that's about it folks. All you need do is clear your diaries for the long weekend in June and start getting excited. We are looking forward to catching up again.

Ok one more addition to the list.

Julian will again be supporting BorderCon by bringing up as much stock as he can manage. But...he will only bring up 1 copy of each title so if you would like to treat yourself (tax return time is just around the corner after all) then it is wise to order via his website first and he will bring it along.

www.unhalfbricking.com

Other services offered by Julian will be a breakfast trek on both Saturday and Sunday morning. Simply meet by the stairs of the Hume Inn at 8:30am and we all go for a short walk to fill up.

Final service from Julian is that he is happy to courier any games won in the Math Trade to and from Melbourne.

Three cheers for Julian...Hip Hip...

Ok last List Item...Promise.

Friday night has traditionally been Pizza Night.

This year we are ordering from Paddy's Pizza and we have secured large pizza's for $8.90 each if we order 10+

EDIT -
Website - http://www.paddyspizzaria.com.au/

The prices listed are for traditional pizzas only - not gourmet.

We will order our pizzas on the night, somewhere between 6-7pm (based on our collective stomachs and who has arrived).

But it would be handy for the pizza crew to have a rough idea earlier in the day as to our order size so they can prepare and keep the delivery time down.

So I need to know from all you good folks if you would like to order a pizza or not. You can drop a comment on this list as to how many you would like or Geekmail me privately - up to you. I will then call Paddy's at around 5pm with a rough estimate.

Your options are -

1 Large pizza for $8.90 (and you can order as many as you like)

Or for $6 you can get half a pizza and a can of soft drink or bottle of water. The club is supplying the drinks.

Of course you can get a whole pizza and still buy drinks from the club separately.

NEWS FLASH

For those gamers that think they'll be arriving after 7:30pm, still drop me a line with your request and pizza's of choice and I will make a special order to coincide with your arrival time. Just drop me a phone call when you are 30 minutes or so away and I'll place the order then.

This year we will have paper plates to make the eating easier.

Order away!

Ok I lied.

This year the Hume Inn has revamped the bar area so we can have all our alcohol, soft drinks and water up in the gaming room rather than have to walk downstairs to get it!

There will be a mix of light and full strength beer, Cruisers, and other mixes like Jim Beam and Coke etc etc.

The club will then supply the soft drinks and snacks.

There is no BYO but Kevin has kindly dropped his prices to allow us to add 50c which will then go towards the club. We will likely put any profits into the Charity fundraising pool. So drink up!

Beers - $3
6-Pack - $18
Mixed Drinks - $5
Soft Drinks + Water - $1

We will have assorted snakes, chocolates and Chuppa Chups also so those little gaming brains can keep ticking over.

All monies from non-alcoholic beveridges and snack foods go directly to our club.
