This is the geeklist about the "Pasteboard and Plastic XI" all-day gaming event which was held on Saturday 13th March, 2010 at the Scout hut in Saltdean (Brighton, UK).

The parent list for this event is the Pasterboard and Plastic Metalist. You can reach information about all the P&P events from there.

The entry fees / raffle / tea and coffee contributions and any other financail benefit gained from all of the P&P events support the 42nd Brighton (Saltdean) Scouts. This also helps us as we now have better tables and chairs to game on!

Thanks to all the gamers who attended for making it such a successful day. We had newcomers to the P&P scene attending for their first time, so we have plenty of life left in this thing. Thanks for coming guys, I hope to see you all again next year!

Special thanks as always must go to Dick for organising another smooth running, intensely enjoyable Pasteboard & Plastic event.

All additions and comments are most welcome. These geeklists work best when the attendees take a few minutes to add games played or bought, pictures, comments, jibes, insults(!?) and so on.

The gamers attending Pasteboard & Plastic get more stuff from The Board Game Club. Thanks again guys! Sorry that you were not able to make it in person this time, but at least the games got through!

This was my first game of the day and I can claim that I was not awake, as we seemed to let Gary run away with this one.

This was a new game to all of us and it took us a turn or two to get used to things and then it all went pretty quickly. I've already played this again, so that says a lot about it. It goes pretty fast once you get started and the winning tactic for us so far seems to be to get the bonus disk things as they give you a lot of points at the end as well as freebie perks during the game itself.

Another add on for me, courtesy of the BoardGameClub. I quite like Last Night on Earth for a B movie Zombie dicefest, so I am a sucker for brains, no, a sucker for expansions, that's it.

This should be pretty cool, I'm stocked up enough with this stuff now, as the base box is rammed full. I picked up the Heroes and Zombies with Grave Waepons as well, just for the hell of it.

Ron brought this card game along and despite the cartoony graphics, there's a wuick, serious game here. Once you get used to the way it works and how the cards act as a number of different things depending on how they are brought in to play, then the game slots together and makes sense. We have also played this one for a secondtie since, and again, the new player was confused, but us old hands were looking at ways to build an engine, so it's a pretty good game in a small box.

This was another BoardGameClub expansion purchase for me, it also fits in to the base box (a bit of a theme here eh?) and is probably enough Dominion for me, as I doubt I could ever comprehend playing all the combinations of cards I now have at my disposal. I liked the cariety that Seaside brings though, so I figured I would get hold of a copy.

This is a great looking game and one of the current favourites of Brighton Boardgames Club. So good, I played it twice on the day, which is pretty rare. This is one of those games thats really good fun, so no matter if you win or lose, it's just a good laugh being evil!

The first game I played, I was following my normal strategy, be really, really evil, batter the monsters, get my dungeon pillaged and lose badly. Well done to Mikey in this one for deciding he was going to be "Lord of the Imps" in advance and being lord of the imps at the end. He got to grips with it really quickly, which was great considering that he's only a little imp himself!

The second game, I was least evil. In fact, I was less evil in the mid game then when I started. I know it flies in the face of what I would normally do as an evil overlord, but as least evil, the wimpy "heroes" that had their asthma playing up as they wakled down the steps to my dungeon looked like small children and old men, my dungeon was hardly touched and that tile that game me 1 or 2 VP extra for titles was a great help in winning me the game.

I bought this off Dick, our resident 18xx expert, as he brought along some games to sell on the second hand table. This was an unexpected buy - totally out of the blue, although 1856 was on my wishlist here at the Geek as the 18xx game of choice that I should buy, having played an enjoyable game of 18AL last year.

This one has the 1830 stlye "square" stock market that I was looking for and was a lot less hassle to track down than I was expecting! Dick had kittens when I punched it before I left P&P (!) but I will be getting this to the table as soon as I can, as we have a few train game players around the place and I reckon I can get some of them to have a pop at this bad boy, as a change from Steam and Steam Barons, which are are well thought of in our group.

When I let it slip to Al that I was buying the latest expansions to this recently, Al said that he was pretty keen for a game when we got to P&P.

6 of us sat down for a late night attempt to save the Townsfolk (or eat them, depending).

Unfortunately, our heroes got battered PDQ, for which I blame myself, as both of the heroe I played were killed! I could not roll much above a 2, apart from the once when I predicted and achieved a double 6. I should have kept a positive mental attitude throughout, as I sucked. How can you have 2 revolvers and lose them both on the same turn? Grrr!!!!

I think we only lasted 7 turns.

Last game of the day for the majority of the gaming hardcore amongst us. I actually tied for the win with Frederick in this, but I can't say that I will be rushing to play it again!

It's a set collection type game with a very thin pasted on theme, but it passed the time and took 6, without you needing to use a lot of brainpower after 13 hours gaming, so it fit the bill.

You can steal cards others have collected and there's cases where this can be blocked and where it cannot and this is what will eventually win or lose the game for you, but there's not a lot to it overall.

I'd ordered the orcs-v-elves set of this to arrive on the day from the ever helpful Boardgameclub.co.uk. I'd read on the 'geek that (a) it could be set up and learnt in 10 minutes and (b) was the best game in the world. Tim and I set about scientifically testing both assumptions.

Firstly, there was shrink wrap to take off the cards (3 minutes); There was rulebook, albeit a small rulebook, but I'm not going to waste my day reading that (20 seconds). We found the summary cards with the sequence of play and had a punt on what the three numbers on most of the cards meant (2 minutes) and finally set up the cards as per the instructions (why, oh why, can't the set-up map use A for Archers?) - another 5 minutes. Giving a total of 10 minutes 20 seconds.

The game was light, fun, with tense dice rolling moments - I played brilliantly; trapping Tim's wounded summoner and closing in with the last few of my troops. Then somehow Tim managed to kill one more elf giving him enough magic to unleash the final card in his hand (I'd failed to pick up on subtle clues such as Tim's re-counting his magic pile and glancing at his last card with that one-more-and-I'm-a-winner look). This was some big scary orc thing who chopped up my leader and danced around on his already card shaped body. So, nearly the best game in the world, but not quite.

Even though neither assertion was correct - I was delighted with the new purchase and went on to play two more games with Al later in the day (who'd thoughtfully bought the gobbos-v-dwarves set to double our gaming possibilities).

As P+P is a whole day, big games like this one can make their way on to the table without fear of interruption. We played it three-player, Tim and I taking on Al in the Sauron role. Al worked his evil plots like a man born to the role.

Sometime about 3 hours later, with no-one able to claim the automatic victory, it came down to a tie-breaker with a very corrupt Bereavor leaving the final battle against the ringwraiths to the dwarf (whose name I've forgotten), who had upto that point been under-performing in the battling and plot-busting stakes.

The tie breaker then came down to a final two cards. It could have gone either way but..........

The good guys won
sauron = cry (at last! A use for that emotieeple)

Doing a bit of a guilty catch up on these Pasteboard and Plastic lists after another great one at the weekend. Apart from those separately listed, I played this (almost certainly involving Dick the Wallace fanatic). One of several Wallaces I really enjoy and I'm sure this occasion was no exception. I can say with equal certainty that I didn't win and would put money on the winner having been Dick. The other games of the day were Citadels (which I played two-player with Tom I think, while we were waiting for others to finish longer games), Wyatt Earp and Gypsy King. The latter was new to me and I didn't do particularly well if I remember rightly. Enjoyable though as was the whole day as always.
