This geeklist shows my analysis of the results of 2010 Geek Users Poll.

Thanks to those who participated, commented and added their own questions.

Feel free to contribute with your own analysis and comments.

History:
In October 2008 on impulse I took my company’s annual employee opinion poll, adjusted it to fit boardgamegeek and published it as a poll on the BGG forum. I was somewhat taken aback when users and then Aldie took it seriously. At that point I had to step up my professionalism and try to make the best of the poll, responding to feedback and adding some other suggested questions. 709 users responded in the end, you can see the thread here and analysis of the responses here.

The vast majority of the respondents wanted to see the poll appear at least annually, but time ran away and nearly a year and a half later I got around to running it again. I made a lot of changes to the poll based on feedback to the last one, removing a lot of duplication, but added in more gaming-related questions and some demographics questions. I also asked Aldie if there were any questions he wanted to add, which there were, but otherwise he has let me run this poll however I want and did not ask for any questions to be removed.

This item title is a link to the poll thread. At this point nearly 3000 users have taken part in the poll. This is over four times as many as took part in the 2008 poll.

The polls are still open, so if you want to contribute your views you still can.

In the following analysis I talk about 'us'. That is the 'us' that answered the poll, which is arguably representative of that portion of the BGG-viewing public who are both registered and answer polls. For the purposes of this analysis I'm going to treat this as being representative of the views of the entire population of BGG users. Which is probably wrong.

Sex
The vast majority (94.4%) of us are male.

Age
The biggest group of us (42%) are in the 26-35 age range and 75%+ are 26-45.

Just over 1% are 18 or younger
11% are 25 or younger
13% are 46 or older
Just over 2% are 56+ (though there are probably more gamers of that age who don't frequent the internet and polls)

National Identity

So where are we from? This question has been asked a lot of times on this site and answered a few times. The USA geeks dominate, that is clear.
Estimates have varied wildly from 52% (based on game ratings data) to a Derk comment of 95% North Americans (based on ISP data). Poll responses show the main countries (sorted by size) are:

55% USA
8% UK
7% Canada
5% Spain
3% German
3% Australia
2% Netherlands
2% Sweden
1% Finland
1% Greece
1% Poland
1% Italy
1% Belgium
1% France
1% New Zealand
1% Denmark
0.5% Brazil
0.5% Portugal
0.5% Hungary
0.5% Israel
0.5% Norway
Other countries were 0.3% or less.

Only 1 user responded from the whole of Africa (from South Africa)
Biggest 'Other Asia' user groups were: 6 users from Russia (0.3%), then Japan (4), Singapore (4), Hong Kong (3)
Of the most populous countries in the world (China and India) a single user responded from each.

0.1% West Virginia 1,814,468
0.1% Wyoming 532,668
0.0% South Dakota 804,194

From a brief look, the West coast seems to have the largest geek concentration.
Beyond that I need someone who knows about USA geography to analyze this! A map with geek population density would be cool....

Unsurprisingly we are positive about gaming with 89% agreeing that gaming 'makes good use of my skills and abilities' and 80% that it lets us learn new things and skills. 80% also agreed that gaming gives them a feeling of personal accomplishment.

Time Well Spent? - The Geek

98% of us agree (65% strongly) that "Considering everything, I am satisfied with the site as a place to spend time"!
In 2008 this was 92% (50% strongly). However...

... Nearly three-quarters of us agree that we spend more time on the site than we should!

Quality

Some slippage here versus 2008 results.

"Aldie & Derk show by their actions that quality is a top priority"
73% Agree, 3% Disagree (76% 2008)

"The people who run the site are more committed to long-term customer satisfaction than short-term results"
64% Agree, 5% Disagree (70% 2008)

78% agreed that site contributors deliver a level of quality content that exceeds Users' expectations, 3% disagreed (77% 2008).

Over three-quarters of us are 'motivated to help the Geek be successful' - astonishing loyalty considering we aren't shareholders (but I guess we are stakeholders)

60% thought that their accomplishments were recognised when they added some excellent content, with 34% neutral (perhaps considering that they hadn't added excellent content) and 6% disagreed

"Aldie, Derk & the Admins on the site demonstrate consistency between words and actions"
63% Agree, 5% Disagree (69% Agree, 12% Disagree - a lot more neutrals now).

"The sites provide adequate processes for handling user complaints and concerns"

Site Strategy

"Aldie & Derk give users a clear picture of the direction in which the sites are headed"
51% Agree, 10% Disagree (2008 was 45% Agree, 17% Disagree). So we may still not really get the GeekDo concept, but we understand more than we did a year ago!

"In my experience, most decisions at the site are well thought out"
67% Agree, 6% Disagree (new question).

Freedom of Speech

Just over half (56%) think they can express their point of view without fear of negative consequences. 26% were neutral and 18% did not agree (2008: 59% Agree, 21% Disagree, so more neutrals now)

When pushed to say where these consequences would come from, 50% of us identified a source, the vast majority state that it would be from other users, with the Admins (or Both) being 8%. They other 50% said they did not feel this fear.

63% of us think that the site has a climate in which diverse perspectives are valued. 13% do not. (2008 was 65% Agree, 17% Disagree, so again more neutrals now).

As I said last time: Well done Aldie, Derk & The Admins, and all of us.
This anonymous survey just says how great this website and community are.

Thanks to one and all.
