A busy meet this month. The usual suspects, plus a few new faces. Also included a novel raffle draw.

A quick game to get proceedings started between Jake and myself.
I blame my dismal performance on the fact that I was teaching Jake the game. It came down to 3 piteous orcs hiding inside a fortified 'cave' in the corner of the board, whilst the elves massed outside the only entrance preparing to attack. Did I mention the fact that I lost?

Ian and Trish taught Lauren and I (with mid-game coaching by Richard). Flying zombies, bohemian skeletons, aquatic amazons, this game has it all. We did make a small error in our interpretation of the rules (ahem, Ian, ahem) which meant that many more races came out than perhaps should have, but this only added to the fun. Despite calling the game two rounds early, Lauren cleaned up with 80-odd points/gold, with Ian a close second and Trish and I languishing a distant joint last.

Lauren and I taught an abbreviated game to Ian and Trish to end the day. It was a 3 women vs one lucky dwarf mage game. Some of the groups' collective hangovers were starting to impair their gaming judgement (no names mentioned!), but I put my runaway victory down to pure WOW skill.

Taught by Terry played by Warren, Katie/JM, Jess and myself.

I enjoyed this fairly light/medium euro. Once we finally got the rules right! Thanks for teaching this Terry. This is a WABA Libray game so check it out.

Finally got to play this again, having owned it for over a year.

JM, Katie and Richard combined to teach me how to take a lead and then get run down at the end by Katie.

Unusual game. The boulder got off to a slow start. Plenty of actions to go around. The adventurers were too cowardly to try the lava room. Cris got the 9 point artefact on his first roll - 12345

Everyone made it out alive!

Owen hogged the wood, cards and had 10 meeples.

Agriculture did not catch on with Steve's people and he spent most of the game hunting and gathering.

Mary cashed in on her superior tools - bought one building with 7 gold!

Roger did a bit of everything but was blocked from buying VPs on the last round. angry

Mary 202pts Owen 140+ pts Roger 100+ pts Steve 67pts

First game for Renato and Nyssa with myself being teacher.
Everyone seemed to catch on early and the game went well.
Renato decided to battle the Paladin in the 2nd year which was all good until his Dragon was turned into a sheep! laugh

A good game where I just eeked out Nyssa for the win although it was close. Renato "defected" when his entire dungeon "saw the light".

Settled in to what I was thinking might be a 5 hour, full 10 turn slug-fest. snore

I was playing the US for the first time against a Twilight Struggle - 1960 MotP - Campaing Manager 2008 worshipper/guru (Michael S).

To my utter astonishment and luck of the cards, I won in the headline phase of Turn 4 with 20 victory points. blush I hear and read that it is indeed a rare event - almost like a hole in one on a par 5.

I will relish this win forever...

Played a game of this with Breaker...it's pretty addictive! Played a Romans vs Carthaginian scenario ( Trebbia?) with a nasty Carthaginian ambush sprung upon me. Fortunately I had the 'Spartacus' card which is pretty useful in a tight corner and was able to claim victory.

After a couple of games involving Elephants I've also come to the conclusion that they are generally pretty useless and should be kept out of harms way.

Any chance of setting up an 'Epic Ancients' encounter, which can handle up to 4 a side? Roger? Paul? How about it?

Dean won this in the raffle. It is a 2-4 player game, so he and Neil sat down and played it, twice. The game is visually intriguing, and the variable set-up means you could explore different situations (mesas close together, mesas spread out). The exporation bars are a bit fiddly, and mesas were easily moved, which is frustrating when it is unclear whether an exploration bar is long enough.

A criticism of this game is that people tend to be very circumspect in their exploring, attempting to deprive the other players of treasures. Perhaps. But this is where the strategic placement of camps is impportant, using the camp to block access to a treasure for other players, but giving you access next go.

In the first game, Neil diplomatically let Dean win by one point. In the second, Neil attempted to fool Dean about his secret treasure. Alas, this subterfuge failed miserably, and Dean won by about 15 points.

As a two person game, this game has a certain charm, and there are probably variations that overcome the diffident explorer (like allowing players to only extend expeditions that they start), I (Neil) suspect that with three or four players, it would end up a bit like three or four player Scrabble, with no strategical play, and just making the best of your current situation. But with two players, definitely worthy of a replay.

Kylie, Craig, Neil and Stephen played this. Stephen was a newbie to it, and Neil had played once and lost badly. Second time round showed that this performance was no fluke - Craig won (on, I think, 70 points), followed closely by Kylie, Stephen came third with a miserable 9, followed closely by Neil on a more miserable 7. Time to think of a new strategy.

Someone forgot the raffle tickets, so we played two games of this to determine the prize winners this month.

The first was open to all players, the second was only open to WABA members.

I'll add the results here soon - http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/38220/waba-raffle-results

Got some great feedback on this way of deciding raffle prizes - it's a game, saves on raffle tickets, gets everyone standing, it has some tension, beats having to hand out tickets and you have to be present to win.

I'm sure I was going to win.

At least until Rob stole Sherwood Forest from me and then assasinated Skippy the Wonder Sea Dog.
