Just recently in the Flowerpower forums, a BGG user expressed surprise that his images of an abstract redesign of Flowerpower were declined. These are those images:

From gallery of aaarg_ink

BGG admin Dale Yu informed us that the images were declined in accordance with BGG's current policy. Namely, that this is prohibited:

"Requesting or providing information or materials that allows others to create, purchase, or download unofficial replications of a game or other works protected by copyright without the permission of the rights holder."

This opens up a lot of questions. Rather than ask them in a disjointed fashion in that thread, I've gathered them here in geeklist form so they can be addressed one by one.

Update: This geeklist has been swiftly removed from front page view. Sad.

Dale Yu never answered my question regarding the issue of redesigned maps. Are these now no longer allowed on BGG? For example, photocurio's excellent Pampas Railroads redraw:

And his equally excellent 1830: Railways & Robber Barons map:

The commercial boards for Medici are notoriously clunky and hideous. Many users have submitted redesigns to ease gameplay. Most lovely, in my mind, is kilgore's.

Fan-made creations of this sort are very common on BGG. Are these now prohibited?

What of thoroughly forgotten, thoroughly unavailable games? BGG user 49xjohn created a complete package to make the Sid Sackson obscurity Holiday from 1973. Are we to no longer see the resurrection of rarities in this manner?

Are images of just one component, alone insufficient to "create an unofficial replication" of a game, subject to the restrictions of BGG's new policy? For example, here are some dice graphics for making extra sets of dice for RTtA. Now forbidden?

Many games that have non-English releases often see users supplying paste-ups for us monolingual English speakers. Here are some paste-ups for the German event cards in ES&R. Is such material now prohibited?

Some clever BGG users have created paper and pencil versions of boardgames, for travel use and whatnot.

Here is Kyoro's fine paper and pencil version of Stephenson's Rocket. Not allowed now?

My more humble paper and pencil rendition of Connect Four now sits in my personal gallery, for fear that I will run afoul of BGG policy if I attempt to upload it to the game's BGG entry. Is my fear unfounded?

Even "requesting or providing information", if that information can be used to create an "unofficial replication", is now prohibited? The user who posed this question and the user who subsequently "provided" it are both now in violation of BGG policy?

The "providing information" portion of BGG's current policy has me wondering. Is just stating that you can play Lost Cities with a Rage deck from Target now subject to disciplinary action?

Can a mere image provide information? Does my shot of a hastily thrown-together version of Zertz using Othello discs and wood cubes fall under the umbrella of "providing information...that allows others to create, purchase, or download unofficial replications of a game?"

A brilliant reworking of Lost Patrol that also serves as subtle critique of Games Workshop's recent heavy-handed approach to IP protection. Would this sort of thing now be disallowed?

Does not user design work both ways?
Cannot game companies gain from the redesigns and inputs of the BGG community?

Directly from the description of the Mr. Jack Extension:
A contest got the designers of Mr. Jack 137 ideas for new characters. Out of those 137 two were chosen:

* Steve McKeogh's Spring-Heeled Man who can jump over other people or obstacles
* Arnaud Fillon's Abberline, an inspector

The expansion contains these 2 new characters and 3 others designed by Bruno Cathala and Ludovic Maublanc

What about Pandemic: On the Brink and the idea for the Bioterrorist? Was that not a user idea from a geek poster who created the scenario from the movie Twelve Monkeys?

Someone uploaded scans of every single card of Red Dragon Inn and Red Dragon Inn 2, including duplicates, at resolutions to allow high res printing. What do you think they did that for?

13. Board Game: Dice Run [Average Rating:5.92 Overall Rank:8278]
Board Game: Dice Run
I converted a freely available site containing the rules to this game to a PDF format. The site is indirectly linked in the game's link part. This conversion is something that I have done before in the past and it never was a problem.
Now however, I firstly got an email asking if I had permission from the publisher or the rights to this game. I replied that it was a simple conversion of freely available rules. Apart from that: Kidult Games has long since been out of business...
After weeks I finally got a decline saying: "The file contains scans of copyrighted material."

What has changed in BGG? It's already out there, only in HTML!!! Is HTML allowed and PDF not? Should the indirect link to the rules be removed then as well? On what ground does BGG approve and decline these kind of things?
