This was the first play of Glen More for us. It’s a new game that’s currently only available in German, which is a little ironic for a game set in Scotland.

Despite a slightly bewildering rules explanation caused by the slightly limited translation, the mechanics of the game soon became quite clear.

The player at the back selects a tile and places it on his tableaux in front of him – providing it is both adjacent to a meeple and ensures that the road and river are not interrupted. The act of placing a tile activates that tile and those around it. This enables the tiles to produce goods, move meeples, distill whiskey etc as the tile’s power dictates.

Although the mechanics of the game became clear after a turn, the winning strategies remained opaque for much longer. This allowed Colin to create and maintain an early lead by sending a load of meeples to parliament and then doubling them with a special tile.

A poor choice of final tile prevented me from taking another turn, but I doubt it would made that much difference to the final scores:

1. Colin 65
2. Dave F (triviadave) 46
3. Andy E (ajevans) 34
4. Dave D (DaveD) 33

When the rules were being explained I was worried that it’d be the typical euro approach of Action#1: take coloured cubes; Action#2: convert coloured cubes into better coloured cubes; Action#3: convert better coloured cubes into VPs.

Well - it sort of is a bit like that although I needn’t have worried as I enjoyed the turn order mechanism and building the tableaux. I’m not going to rush out and buy it but I’d definitely play it again.

Dave D said it was a little bit more interesting than the average Euro. We took this to be a ringing endorsement - although he maintains it is merely damnation by faint praise!

I bought this last year, brought it to the club but it went down like a lead balloon.

However I recently re-read the pt.4 size typeface rules and realised I’d missed a key word - “all”. Following 2 successful plays elsewhere I managed to convince enough people at the club to give it another go.

It was a lot more successful this time. Whilst the other players would class it as a reasonable filler, I’d be more generous and rate it 8+ - it’s a game that needs time to grow on you rather than offering instant gratification on the first play.

1. Dave F (triviadave) 52
2. Andy E (ajevans) 43
3. Dave D (DaveD) 39
4. Colin 26

The other group played the abridged version of Caylus. The scores were ridiculously tight!

1. Steve H (stevehilton9) 50
2. Mike (Mike_Head) 49
3. Andy S (Antidog) 48
