This was our second playing of this at the club, but the first time with the advanced rules. These extra rules offer City Seal bonuses for constructing the most buildings in a round, add City Gates, and for the last three rounds a positive or negative event will be resolved.

The City Seal and the City Gates additions add quite simple rules which add a bit more depth to the game without adding much complexity or time to play. The events on the other hand, whilst not being complex can turn the game into a bit of a brain burner and really slow it down. (Note: I really like the events as the City Emblem action, which is used to protect against these events add interaction).

The first event that was revealed was the Hanseatic League, which provides bonuses for every building on your board. Cue a building boom. The second event was a fire, which destroys every unprotected tile on the board. The combination of the two tiles really slowed the game down, encouraging us to build and then creating a headache in protecting these buildings.

The game ended remarkably closely. When you are down to your last gold, you can cash it all in for a random building material. I did so on my very last go hoping for anything but Clay, thus allowing me to complete a building. I got lucky and picked Glass, the most valuable resource, which gave me 5 points, pipping Mike at the post.

I find this quite an interesting game, which is fun to play. However as we each have our own player boards, it is quite low on player interaction. Lower than even the level of passive-aggressive interaction seen in worker-placement games. Think Power Grid: Factory Manager level of interaction.

The group played two games of World Without End this week. It has proved a very popular game among several members of the club.

I must admit I've been a little bit wary of giving it a go as it doesn't sound like my cup of tea seeing as it doesn't involve either trains or Nazis (critical elements of any great game IMO).

The scores for the first game were:

Dave F 44.5
Dave D 43
Steve H 42.5
Andy S 37.5
