"I don't want coffee, but I'll be willing to trade you a wax for the stink"
"Here, have a garden for free"
"Wait, I'll trade a wax and chili for that stink"
[All said within 3 seconds]

My first time playing this trading game saw me, unsurprisingly, last out of 5 players with Billy winning with only 2 fields. For those unfamiliar with the game, you are a bean trading trying to plant beans to harvest for money. In Euro speak, you are trying to acquire multiples of the same card for money (different exchange rates). The trouble is that your hand order is fixed, and rules force you to plant/play cards either from your hand and/or the draw deck, interrupting your aim of gaining enough cards to get money.

This light game is easy to learn but not to play. Those with quick brains who can recognise when to try swap beans, give them away and when to rip up/harvest a crop will enjoy the game, as will those who want something light before, inbetween or after a heavy game. WABA has a copy (or two) in its collection and there are much worse games to learn and play.

This game* initially seemed too boring. How hard and strategically complex is a game where point scoring is mainly based on the surface area of the castle multipled by the height your knight on on? Obviously, get on the highest tower in the most spread out castle. Duh!

Despite a slow start, the game quickly revealed its depth. On each round, each player only has 5 action points to do things including adding tower blocks, adding a knight of your character and moving your knight. With cards adding extra abilities, this game proved intriguing and grew on me as the strategic elements and choices became increasingly important-do I try get to the great surface area castle? Is it better to try improve the tower of where I am on? Is now the time to add another knight or wait to see where things develop? One important rule was that two castles could not be joined, opposite to Acquire where one of the important strategic elements was when and if to merge two companies.

This game is one that I would be willing to play again.

A five player (Dean, Renato, myself, Joycelyn? and Tyrone?) game with two new SoC players. The forces of good eventually win, with a traitor present. More detailed report may be forthcoming (but no promises).

Dean and Stephen graciously played with me and the kids - Owen and Amelia.

The Boulder was slow to go around initially so there was plenty of opportunity to pick up treasure and completely explore the lava room. Dean watched gleefully as my faulty memory saw my first character plunge into the lava.shake

Amelia kept all her treasure, picking up more in the river and was first out with 27 meeple. Dean came second. Stephen wasted one turn as he was surrounded by 3 lava trap tiles and the boulder. Stephen then gambled that the boulder would not roll forward 5 spaces but was crushed just before the exit. laugh

I picked this one up on ebay about a month ago, not knowing anything about the game. You wouldn't think that Yahtzee meets Glory to Rome would work, but it's actually really fun, especially with more players.

Had two games of this.

In the first, Stew, Fian and I made it off the island. Stew took his share of the treasure and left whilst Fian and I were joined by Roger for a second game as we greedily returned to the island for more treasure. We died.

Bewildered look of the day for me was by Fian who was playing our 'type of game' for the first time....Where are the dice?.....There isn't any......the look I then got was priceless?

Keith, Kylie, Christoph and Jess attempt Tigris & Euphrates for the first time. Approximately, half way through the game...

Tim: "So how many people here have never played Tigris & Euphrates before?"

We all indicated our lack of previous experience with T & E

Tim: "What!? All of you? May God have mercy on your souls!"

My mum and aunty joined Roger, Rob and myself in this game and were cheerfully lobbing cannonballs in all directions.

Several parrots were out which made things interesting. Dread arrrh Leece won the day!

Priya taught this to Rob, me, Megan and Roger.

I'm still not sure whether I find it fascinating or frustrating or both!

I'll have to play it again to be sure. At the end of the next game I think I will be more certain as to how to react when it's offered to me.
It will be one of three ways, and I think it's going to be a case of number 2.

1)I might react like I do when offered a game of Power Grid: ie chew my own arm off to get away.

or

2)I might react like I do when offered a game of Ingenious : ie, "Yeah okay." and sweat blood gently at the temples throughout and enjoy the game and lose but feel like I've excercised my brain really well.

or

3)Ticket to Ride: Europe "OH YES PLEASE!!!"

Taught this to Andrew and Andrew (Andy) but had to leave when Andy spilt his coffee all over his deck. Unfortunately for me, the sleeve openings were facing the flood of caffeine and about 20 cards now smell of second rate latte.

Must say I'm enjoying this game a lot, even though I've never been a CCG/LCG fan before.

Andrew, Gracie, George and I started off with this simple but cool little game to welcome George to WABA.

Was interesting as things clicked for each of us, seeing the more efficient ways of getting your thieves around the board. Andrew ended up winning, but we were all fairly close to getting our fourth treasure.

Same group as Thief of Baghdad.

George had bought this along to play - and I really enjoyed it!
There was that first 15 minutes of confusion, with all the different symbols, and it is the first time I have played a game where role selection determines which phases occur.

But then it all clicks, and I was trading in goods to draw huge handfuls of cards, hoping to find something that would aid my tableaux.

George, Hong (who picked it up amazingly fast!) and I played another game later in the day, which was also great fun. George won both games, although I was nipping at his heels in each of them!

I am sure all you more experienced geeks are already aware of this, but there is a fantastic electronic version of RftG here: http://keldon.net/rftg/
You can play solo against the very good AI, or against other people online. Lots of fun, and I have been playing it a lot since finding out about it last week.

Same group as Thief of Baghdad, with Warren also joining in.

Andrew will be honoured throughout the ages as Cleopatra's most honoured architect, while i was fed to the crocodiles.

Very cool components, and i like the half cards face up / half face down idea.
