This is a relatively simple multi-player war/conquest game.

The game is played on what appears to be a large settlers of catan board, with face down hexes. The game board scales up and down according to the number of players. Players start with a capital and an infantryman and turn the hexes face up as they expand and explore the board.

The game mechanics encourage you to be very aggressive, if you aren't expanding or attacking your opponents each turn you're losing. And unlike many games of it's ilk it's not possible to turtle.

If you're a fan of fast paced direct player conflict, you'll probably like this.

2. Steve H 9
3. Andy S 6

In case anyone's interested the designer has wrote an article about the game was designed:

http://www.viktorygame.com/viktoryiihistory/

Its a good read, basically he was disappointed with the lack of fighting in Settlers of Catan and decided to rectify it.

This game is an auction game by Stefan Dorra, players put shops up for auction on the board and receive a cut of the bid if they don’t win it themselves. And then try and direct the visitors into their shops to earn spend cash.

The rules are pretty simple with this game, but the strategies can be deceptively deep. It’s good to try and get a monopoly in one colour, and also to have your shop surrounded by other player’s shops so that they are bringing lots of visitors your way.

The game also plays pretty quickly with enough going to make it interesting.

2. Andy S 3,300
3. Steve H 1,450

Steve said it's not really his type of game.

I've only played this once, and found it quite a dry game of optimisation with little player interaction. But as far as such games go, it's quite a good one, and one I'd happily play again.

I've not played this yet but would like to give try it, given that I enjoy Ticket to Ride and it's one I could possibly get my girlfriend to play.

The first of two games which have been around for a while, have seen a lot of play at the club, but which were new to me. I expressed an interest in this one based on its overall appearances on the blog, and I wasn't disappointed.

This is a straightforward but interesting little game that plays pretty quickly - manage the efficiencies and productivity of your factory; make money by producing and selling goods, the byproduct of which is an amount of waste related to how technically advanced your factory is. Stacks of three differing cards are laid out, one stack more than there are players. Going round the table each takes his choice of a stack. Cards allow technical advances, increased productivity, production, hiring and firing, waste management, resource auctions plus multiplier/bonuses and bribes to avoid reduced profitability when the inevitable disaster card appears.

After a disaster, anyone whose waste management is not in the green is penalised dependent on how badly they're polluting. The game end is triggered when someone raises their factory profitability to 20m euros per production cycle, at which point the round is allowed to finish and then points are scored based on how efficient and profitable you are.

By all accounts, this was an expensive game with bids for resources high throughout. Mike was unfortunate to be last player in the first round, a position from which I don't think he felt he had opportunity to recover. I don't think it helped that, for about three rounds in which he chose not to buy resources because of the cost, I held back an auction card knowing that everyone else had the resources they needed and he'd get it cheap. Thinking I might need some in future, I chose to hold on to the card, and so it proved. There is a definite advantage to holding the auction card and having choice of last bid.

I was gutted to find at the game's end that Dave F had the same number of points but more cash in hand, therefore took the win. CURSE YOU DAVE!!! I am shaking an imaginary carbon-neutral fist.

I've known about this one for years, but avoided it because someone told me it was exceedingly dry. This is utter balls. This is a nice little set-building game that reminds me of Ticket to Ride, though is much more interesting than Alan Moon's game. Very light and with a short play time, I think the special abilities of the game 'characters' add something that TtR's simple rummy sets can't match. I think I may acquire this one as I know I'll get my wife to play it, and it's the kind of thing that can be taught in five minutes to head off those Christmas after dinner games of Trivial Pursuit.

Very simple, very light, but with lots of options on how you choose to score, I liked it a lot.

September 22nd

Dave D, Dave F, Donald, Mike and Steve H (Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Titch being otherwise engaged).

Just the five of us tonight, so we settled down for a game of Power Grid on the map of Spain. Portugal was ring-fenced and out-of-bounds.

Spain is an odd one with resources replenishment initially average for all bar Uranium, which sees no replenishment at all until Step 2, when suddenly there is an abundance of everything, then things cool off for Step 3.

Luck of the draw meant I had first bid on the first plant, so I bid as little as possible for the lowest garbage plant and was 'lucky' enough to win it. Steve picked up a plant, at which point the transformer station came out and, with 3 players unable to bid as they had no station, it was a battle between Steve and me. I bid minimum, Steve didn't want it, so I felt it was an expensive early game for me. And so it went.

Dave D built from the southwest, travelling north and east; Mike started in the north and built a small ring that Steve broke into from his more central position; and Dave F and I both started building along the French border.

Early on, coal and oil were much contested with Mike keeping his cities down in order to remain at the back and hence have first pick of fuel. As the expansionist, I was last for resource pick a lot, which meant when I'd bought an oil plant I could only afford to use it once and swiftly dumped it for a nuclear plant. Steve had also picked up a nuke - a fact which, because of the lack of fuel replenishment in Step 1, forced my hand to initiating Step 2 early, thus triggering the release to market of all that lovely uranium. Things progressed quickly from there when Dave F went for a 4 plant that (I think) was powered off one coal. The price of this rose rapidly above €50 with everyone dropping out bar Dave and me. I lost the game for everyone right there as I chickened out even though I had almost €400 at that point because I thought something better might come out. It didn't. Dave F had then calculated that he could put out the six cities to end the game and, though he only powered 13 of the 15, he still stole a march on the rest of us.

There were a few comments that it was an odd game, but I think the only thing that might be considered odd about a game of Power Grid would be if things proceeded as expected. It's always a surprise.

Power Grid is also odd in that I rate it at 8.5 based on the 'Geek scale, yet it is a much better game than some I rate higher. My only excuse for this is that there are games I'm always in the mood for and, though I'll never turn down PG and always enjoy it, I sometimes have to be coaxed. It's also a bit of a mash of mechanisms that, for some reason, work.

Here are (I think) the scores. Don't worry, I'll correct them next week.

September 22nd

After Power Grid, there was time for a couple of games of something lighter and we had the chaos of Guillotine. You know the drill - play an action card, execute its action, take the first noble in line and put it in your score pile then replenish your action cards. There can also be associated actions for offing some nobles.

I do enjoy this game, but I felt that with five players it was lacking a little, perhaps because you don't get that many turns before the last noble hits the chopping block and the day is over. I definitely prefer it with fewer players and a few more chances to play something useful out. Mike won game 1 and Dave D game 2.

Scores soon.

26th September

Not a Wednesday but, as Steve H, Dave F and I are all club regulars, and because we played at Steve's place in Halesowen, I think it fits here.

We began around 1430, finished just before 2000, so we managed the 3-player full game in five-and-a-half hours. Not bad.

We played the variant where each player is dealt a number of Era III conditional VP cards, selects one and keeps it whilst the others are shuffled for seeding during the third era. The player then has a baseline strategy for accumulating some points at the game's end.

At one point I was ahead by a good margin, but Steve reined me during the final turn to a point where I seriously thought he'd beat me, but luckily that didn't happen. My first win at this game, and one I'm quite proud of - especially as my society was basically a bunch of highly-cultured cavemen.

Played with my copy of the game, and I have to say I thought it was pretty terrible. I made a lot of mistakes and languished at the back for a long time, but semi-redeemed my score by the end. It's not one I'll rush to play again, though I'll always give a game a second chance. I'd had a bad day at work and I play games to relax, but this one did nothing soothing. It seems far too fiddly and complicated for what it delivers and, if you get into trouble, you can easily find your problems are insoluble.

Dave F took a well-deserved win with a very good double ship launch on turn 3. I thought Andy played very shrewdly for a first go, too, making a much better fist of it than I did.

A simple game of telling porkies. Lay down up to four types of card to tell a story, but a minimum of two (a Deed, which is green and a Foe, which is red; in addition you can play a blue Scene and a yellow Result). Each card has a points value. Whomever gets away with the biggest boast wins the round. Players with appropriate cards can steal cards from others or accuse opponents of lying, in which case they can exchange one (sometimes two) cards from the opponent's boast to reduce its value. The winner of the round scores all cards from the boast; the loser score only their highest value card.

At Halesowen Boardgames Club...
I played a light party-style card game...
Taking on the best the Midlands had to offer...
And besting them with my bullshit.

A game I won with neither tactics nor strategy, I just managed a couple of high-scoring whoppers when neither opponent could accuse me of lying. No-one was more surprised than me when it turned out I'd taken it. I was sure Paul would win because he took every opportunity to load his scoring pile.

A game for a laugh and not one to take in any way seriously. Hey, if I won as I was flubbing around, there's no way you could consider it a contest.
