My personal library of books makes my games collection look paltry by comparison. As much as I love playing games, to me reading a book is even better. What I read is fairly diversified. Within the realm of fiction, my favorite genre is science fiction-- particularly Golden Age science fiction. Here I am listing (with nominal games as headings) authors of classic works of the genre with my comments.

My collection concentrates on Golden Age SF and so I don't know later stuff as well as I would like, something referred to with those authors below who are later than the Golden Age. Some exceptions like Frank Herbert exist.

I am allowing public additions, but I reserve the right to edit the items. Please list all non-English items in the original with the language identified as well as an English title if one exists.

Unfortunately I do not know non-English SF as well as I would like, especially Russian SF. For German SF, I'm aware of the Perry Rhodan series but little else although I know it does exist. French SF I also only know a few authors from. Please add the classic non-English authors to this list but please only the classic ones.

NB: No, L. Ron Hubbard is not classic SF. His work could make him the poster-child for bad pulp writing and lack of either research or common sense

George Orwell.

Orwell wrote a number of works but in SF he is known for his classic 1984 which is not only a classic of the genre.

Edgar Pangborn.

Three novels stand out as classics by this author. Davy is a bawdy romp which was not my cup of tea. A Mirror for Observers is perhaps the classic hidden aliens among us novel, but it manages to avoid paranoia all too often associated with that sub-genre. Finally West of the Sun is a classic of human survival in an alien world.

Alexei Panshin.

Panshin's debut novel was the classic Rite of Passage. His latter works, what there were of them, did not live up to the promise of that beginning.

H. Beam Piper.

Piper's Terro-Human Future History remains one of the most thorough and sweeping future histories in the genre decades after Piper's tragic death. His Paratime series, while less prolific, has had just as dramatic an influence. His best known novel is the classic Little Fuzzy. He also wrote such classic stories as Omnilingual. Virtually everything he wrote has become classic, and that's not much of an exaggeration.

Frederik Pohl.

Pohl has never been my cup of tea for the most part, but he left his mark on the genre both as author and editor. Even his tongue-in-cheek works like Gladiator-at-Law were highly influential. His novel Slave Ship addressed the nature of both freedom and slavery, affirming that a slave must cooperate in his own enslavement to remain a slave.

Roger Zelazny.

Where Zelazny has left his impression on the genre is by his intense use of imagery. SF has necessarily brought the seemingly fantastic down to earth into comprehensively human terms. While Zelazny does that too, he also gets across the fantastic aspects that humans will surely encounter in extraterrestrial environments. One of a few classics is The Doors of His Face, the Lamps of His Mouth; another is This Immortal.

Most noted for his military SF, Pournelle has written such classic works as The Mote in G-d's Eye (with Larry Niven). I don't know his work otherwise well enough to go into detail.

Christopher Priest

British author who has been working since the late 60s but who isn't very prolific. He has written many award-winning (mainstream as well as SF) books most of which have unreliable narrators. Most tend to be dark and structurally complex. People may have heard of The Prestige which was made into a film, but nearly all of his other work is worth reading.

Kim Stanley Robinson.

Known for his Mars series, this is another author I don't know well. Yet aagin, one does not get so many SF awards without making a mark. Admittedly he does also write fantasy, but Robinson's hard SF is getting noticed.

Fred Saberhagen.

While not highly acclaimed, Saberhagen's Berserker series has been highly influential. Recasting known historical situations into the context of SF as future scenarios is a well-known technique. Saberhagen is one of a number who would reexamine the historical parallel, not just copy it. The idea behind Berserker and the series it spawned was to examine a strange technique from military history and make sense of it. In some ways, that is why Saberhagen has not gotten much critical acclaim, but that ignores the fact that Saberhagen is addressing not just the tactical aspects but the human ones too.

Howard Waldrop.

Waldrop wrote such classics as The Ugly Chickens, an ironic tale about dodos. Again, being a later author, I don't know his work as well as I should. He seems to me though to stand out in making his work humorous (albeit not intended to make one laugh out loud) and while still very much SF in another sense very ordinary and familiar seeming to the reader.

Dan Simmons.

I don't know this author as per the comments on this list, but the on-line research suggests that Hyperion is his stand out work. The author seems to do more fantasy than SF but he also does SF.

I'm including him because one does not win so many awards without making a mark on the genre.

Cordwainer Smith.

Smith distinct narrative style, said to be influenced by his early study of Chinese literature, and unusual subjects-- often dealing with issues of human dignity, even when the form is not entirely recognizably human-- left a mark on the genre of SF far beyond what one would expect from the small quantity of his work. His classic novel is Norstrilia.

George O. Smith.

Smith's Venus Equilateral series, about a manned communications station, and Lost in Space deal with issues of practical communications on the vast scale of interplanetary and interstellar travel. While the specifics of the former series became outdated with the invention of the transistor, the underlying ideas and the humanity of the stories makes them just as much worth reading today as when they were written.

E. E. "Doc" Smith.

"Doc" Smith was in my opinion purely pulp writing of the "one man can save the world" type when the human hero seems superhuman. Yet this was highly influential pulp writing for its pure imagination. The Lensman series is a landmark in SF.

Stableford used his expertise in sociology to address that via via SF in away it never had been before. Here again I don't know his work as well as perhaps I should but his mark on the genre is undeniable.

Olaf Stapledon.

Primarily a philosopher, Stapledon left his mark on SF by presenting in novel form his sweeping future history of humanity based on his philosophical ideas. His classic novels Last and First Men and Star Maker are only nominally novels, but they showed SF what could be done.

Theodore Sturgeon.

When the complete short stories of Sturgeon were collected, it took 12 volumes, and I saw those volumes when they came out; they're not small. His novels also stand out as classics such as his early The Synthetic Man and More Than Human and later The Cosmic Rape. Of course, Sturgeon did not shy away from controversial topics; his novella If All Men Were Brothers, Would You Let One Marry Your Sister? addressed via SF a controversial theory promoting incest. All in all, sturgeon left his mark on SF as a great story-teller who would on occasion treat any topicvia SF.

William Tenn.

Tenn's work is largely satirical, which is difficult to do well in a manner that will remain interesting to read even after many years. In general, Tenn succeeds well because his satire applies as much to people as to specific cultures, gov'ts, etc. His story The Masculinist Revolt is held up as his classic story, but frankly I think a number of others could equally well contend for that title.

James Tiptree, Jr..

Primarily a short story author, James Tiptree, Jr., was the pseudonym of Alice Sheldon whose work challenges a lot of sexist attitudes and assumptions which may not be recognized as such. Her classic collection is Her Smoke Rose Up Forever.

E. C. Tubb.

Please note that the Wikipedia entry for Tubb refers to an entire series known as F.A.T.E. not found on the bibliography page I've linked to, although that source is usually complete.

Although E.C. Tubb published his first works within the Golden Age, his career reached its heyday after that and my knowledge of his work is limited. He is known of The Space-Born, his Dumarest series and possibly the series referred to in the Wikipedia entry mentioned above.

Tubb is known for his space opera. Often that term is used pejoratively, but it shouldn't be-- as Tubb demonstrates in what I have read of his work.

Wilson Tucker.

Wilson Tucker is most known for the classics The Lincoln Hunters and The Time Masters. In these and other works, not all SF, Tucker does not shy away from controversial subjects. Thus Tucker stretches the bounds of what one can do in the genre.
