So this year we went to Spiel again, two days, Thursday and Friday.

We booked a hotel close to the fair, the Atlantic Congress hotel. We arrived early (no stau ). After we parked the car at the hotel parking garage, we walked 2 minutes to the entrance of the fair. It was 9.45 by then. There was a long row, and we didn't get in until 10.30. (In the afternoon, when it was really quiet, we bought our tickets for Friday, so we could walk right in Friday morning).

We didn't keep track of everything that was explained to us and everything we played, but we've seen a lot (and bought a lot!)

Thursday morning we just wandered around looking at everything that looked interesting. At around 13.00 we walked around the fair and bought everything we already knew we wanted to buy, and then dropped that off at the car. After that we tried to walk around making sure we were not missing anything.

Besides what's listed below, we also got game explanations for:
Expedition Sumatra,
Caravelas,
Toscana,
51st State,
Mijnlieff,
Cadwallon: City of Thieves,
Genesis.

This was a must buy, bought it in the shopping spree of Thursday afternoon.

After playing two games I really love this expansion. Lot's of new possibilities, I can't wait to try all new combo's with all the other cards.

Also a must buy. Throughout the two days we were there, we've asked a couple of times about the promo cards but they were stuck in customs

At the end or Friday the stack of this expansion seemed a lot smaller then at the start on Thursday. I wonder if they have more with them, else I think maybe they will be sold out before the end of the fair.

We've got this for free when we bought Doomgate Legion. It actually looks like a nice cooperative game. It may be a while before we play it, with all the other games we've bought, but I'm curious.

A nice Japanese man, Mitsuo Yamamoto, lured me into playing one of his games "King's valley" This is a little abstract game on a 5x5 board. The middle of the board is the king's valley. All the pieces can move horizontally, vertically and diagonally, but must keep moving until they hit another piece or the side of the board (like with Ricochet robots). One of your pieces is the king, and you have to get it inside the King's valley.

Did't buy this, but it is a nice little game. You can play it online at http://www.nakajim.net/

The stand had lots of beautifully made abstract games (we only tried King's valley), you could buy the simple boards, laminated, or (on sunday) the beautiful tile boards.

Caesar! had this game on his wishlist, so when we saw it at the Huch! stand we we quickly took a look at it. The components are really nice, and the gameplay looked really interesting too. We didn't play right away, but we bought it

We've played one game now, and it's really fun. Every turn you have a choice of placing 2 tiles, or 1 tile and a scoring card. The problem is your scoring cards will conflict eachother. Luckily after someone has played all their scoringcards or when the tiles run out, you can start to take away tiles, but you also get new (conflicting, arggghh) scoring cards. Very frustrating also if your opponent is taking away the color you want to score on.

Good game, glad we bought it.

We tried to play this game on Thursday, but every time we walked past the Huch! stand someone was already playing there. On Friday we tried again, but to no avail. We discovered there was also a stand in hall 9 but no-one was there. Later on luckily they were. We got a good explanation and played a round. We immediately bought the game

We've played a standard match now too, and really like it. After the first round a piece gets a dragon tooth, that gives that piece some other abilities and scores more points if it wins. Very fun to play.

We bought this game pretty spontaneously, without doing any research beforehand. I heard some positive stuff about it and it seems like a game we usually enjoy. And when we get a free hand-painted dragon, the choice of buying it is clear

After playing the game for the first time today I realise I really didn't know anything about it. It's like Pandemic with a fantasy theme! We had lots of fun playing, and we almost won (1 general left).

We saw a stand with this game in hall 6, and it looked interesting. For 5 euro we bought a starter set and two pre-constructed decks for 3 euro each. After that, we sat down and got a (very bad) explanation of the game and played a few rounds. It was pretty fun, so no buyers remorse (yet ).

Our interest in this game started when Caesar! saw a review for the iPhone version of this game. I looked the game up on BGG and saw that you can also play the game online on Yucata.de. We've played 1 or 2 games there and we were hooked. So this game was put on the must buy game list for Essen. And we bought it.

The box is really heavy because of the 4 wooden blocks the players use in the game. These look really great. The wooden dice are also very nice. It was a surprise they are bigger then normal dice. Really nice looking game, very happy with this.

Raindrop Chess.

We were walking along minding our own business, when someone at a booth pointed at me and said I had to play chess. I advised him to play with Caesar! but he insisted I should play.

(funny thing is last week C! and I started playing a few games of chess and really liking it. He played some chess when he was younger, and I suck at chess, so I keep losing )

So I sit down and it turns out not to be a normal chess game, but Raindropchess. In this game you start with an empty chess board and both players turn a card every turn and get to place the piece on the card on the board. When someone gets to put the king on the board, that person is also allowed to move the pieces, but the other person just has to keep turning cards until they also get their king.

The aim of the game is still the same, so until you put your king on the board you can't lose, but it might be that all your other pieces are already gone.

The idea of the game is that inexperienced players can win from experienced players, so they are not put off of chess.

Although we don't mind randomness in games, for us it should not be in chess, so not a buy. I can see it maybe a good start in chess for children.

So when I saw they had a small solo version, of both games, I thought it would be fun. Haven't looked at it further after buying it, to busy with playing all the 2 player games.

Again we were just walking along (between lots of playing tables) when someone from the booth next to were we were standing asked if we wanted to play 7 Wonders. Well sure we would. The explainer yelled out for two more people to come and play and that wasn't exactly a problem. We got the explanation and played the game and it was in under an hour (don't know how long exactly).

Everybody gets 7 cards, picks 1, puts the rest besides his neighbour. In turn everybody plays their card, and then picks up the set of 6 cards you got from your neighbour, pick a card and so on. This goes on until there is 1 card left, that is put in the middle of the table. This happens 3 times, 7 cards from stack I, 7 from stack II and 7 from stack III, that's it.

I really liked the game, but it really is not a 2 player game, and we try not to buy games that are not fun with 2.

This was a smaller game, a 2-player only (travel) version. I played this game a few times on Yucata.de and liked it. So when I saw this for a few euro, I couldn't resist. It's a simple game: the board has different colors on it. The players get cards with those colors. You can play a card to put your marker on the board. Aim is to get 4 in a row. With 2 cards of the same color you can put your marker on top of another.

We (=especially Caesar!) have been looking at this game for a few years (since it came out). It looks really nice and we like the theme too, but somehow we were never really convinced enough to buy it. So when after day 1 we read some people bought it for 12 euro we thought that would be a nice price. On Friday we saw the game for 10 euro, an easy choice, we bought it.

We've played it one time now. For me somehow this game was really difficult, I really couldn't figure out how to place the tunnels and stations. Also we played some rules wrong (or forgot them).

We've played this game online a few times on BSW and really liked it. So when we saw it for 6 euro it was an easy decision.

This game gives exactly the same feel playing it online or in real life, not the case with all games. In this game you play as much rounds as there are players. So 2 rounds with 2 players and 7 rounds for 7 players. Every round will take longer if there are more players, so the game will take longer with every player added. I don't think I would like to play this game with more then 3 (maybe 4 fast players). Luckily we usually just play with 2

Before Essen we looked at all the games to be released at Essen, and I don't think I saw this one anywhere. Maybe because it was released earlier? (or maybe I missed it completely).

At the fair itself we walked past it too. But then a friend we bumped into said: "Have you seen Ascension? You two will really like it, just your thing." And then he described it as a deck-building game in which you don't have to choose before hand what cards you are gonna buy (or fight), but you always just have the choice of the 6(?) cards in the middle of the board.

This didn't sound like a good recommendation, we like picking out cards for good combo's like in Dominion, but we went back to the booth of the stand anyway. We got another sort explanation of the game there, and we learned that you have as much buy's and actions as you want, so you can always try to use all your cards. And the cards in the middle are always refilled immediately. This made the game seem much more appealing. So after walking around the fair a bit more, later we came back and bought the game.

We've played it now, and it is indeed a fun game. You have cards that give you Runes (money) and Cards that give you Power (for fighting). There are also constructs that you can place in front of you that give you a bonus every turn. If you fight a monster it will be send to the Void, and give you crystals as victory points. This means, all the cards in your deck will always do something, there never will be a useless card (but of course there can be weak cards). The cards are of 4 different types, and this helps with combo's (like a bonus if you buy a card of the same type, or victory points for every different type of construct).

We really liked the game, and I think we will play it a lot more, and probably will end up with lots of expansions (I heard the first was planned for March?). It is different enough from Dominion and Thunderstone to earn its own spot in the cupboard.

Other then the cool name I knew nothing of this game. So when we saw the stand for this game we had to take a look. The designer was explaining the game and asked if we wanted an explanation and want to play the game. Well sure!

Everybody gets a paper with the layout of a spaceship. The spaceship is divided into a lot of hexes (the more players the bigger the ship). With cards it is randomly and secretly decided who will be humans (trying to escape) and who will be aliens (trying to kill humans). Aliens can move 2 spaces, humans 1. In our game I was the only human against 2 aliens, there were 4 exits at the side of the spaceship, you start in the middle. Every turn you decide where to move, write that down, and then get a card. There are 3 options: Nothing happens, noise green and noise red. With a noise red card you have to say your location, with a noise green card you can lie. But the others don't know which card you had. The aliens also move like this, but if they think they are on a spot with a human they can attack (then they are of course not secret anymore) and all humans and aliens on that space die.

In our game Caesar! who was an alien, killed the designer (also alien) and my human escaped! It was a really fun game, but we weren't convinced it would work well with just two, so no buy. Although and I can't say it enough, I really liked it
