Hello world!

I have started the boardgaming hobby on 30th June 2010 and I now want to write a list of my purchases and my impressions upon playing them.

At the end of the list I will add some of the games that I will most surely look to purchase in the near future.

With the introduction out of the way, let's go!

Notes:
1. The list is in chronological order and the ratings are 1(minimum) - 10 (maximum). The ratings are for the base game including the expansions unless stated otherwise. Also the rating tries to be somewhat objective and does not reflect the way my gaming group reacted to the game, but my personal overall opinion of it.
2. Comments, thumbs and GG are welcomed and all will be invested in getting geekbadge.
3. Be gentle, it is my first Geeklist.

Fluff Text: Another Essen game this was supposed to be something like RftG. Building VP engines sounded quite good.

It was also purchased from cosimshop.de and this was the only one that had a problem. The game is in German (a language I am not familiar with). This does not make it unusable since it is an iconography game, but the fact that I have the rules and the card titles in German is slightly disturbing. I know I can print off my own rules, but the cards will still be in German. It is also strange that there is no way one can tell easily if at all from the box the language of the game.

Also there is the problem of missing tokens that I will probably get with another order from the shop. So far I have tried to sell this off to someone in my country, but apparently nobody wants it.

Impression: This is a game that is good, but that is spoiled by the experience I had with the quality. I have 95% cards in German, 5% cards in Spanish and no fix pack as of yet. Tried to talk to Portal, but they would not hear me out or try to do something about this. I will not be purchasing any other games from them. Ever!

Final Rating: A bad 3

Additional Notes: If the cards were not a big deal and if Portal would have been more responsive, it would have been a 7.5.

Status: Traded

Why: Portal did not want to give me some proper cards although it was clearly their mistake and as such I did not give the game a second chance. Someone in my group tried to work with it and they decided that it is a good game and it would deserve a second chance, but I just turned my back on this game. Might be a good one, but I will never know.

Fluff Text: I was looking for some more interesting games and I found this one. It seemed to be a fairly difficult cooperative game with eastern mythology. I also used to watch anime so it seemed quite interesting. The art was really on my good side so I ordered the game.

Impression: This is quite a nice game and the art is even more spectacular in person. Antoine Bouza really hit the mark here. The boards are also super smooth which is a big bonus. The game plays well and it is quite challenging which I like in a game. Sadly, the whole Taoist-ghost-hunter-monk theme fades fast and it becomes a bit of a puzzle to kill ghosts in as few moves as possible. Nevertheless, I find it quite enjoying and tough so I give it extra points for that. My group seems to love it too.

Final Rating: An ambitious 9

Status: Keeper

Later Edit: I had lost a black tao token and e-mailed Repos for a replacement. Boy did they over deliver! I got my black tao token, the guardhouse expansion, the village people expansion, Chuck No-Rice and B-Rice Lee! Amazing customer support! Thank you Repos!

Fluff Text: I ordered the expansion along with the base game. The expansion comes with lots more components and improves the game a lot. The artwork is kept at the same high standard as the base game and all the bits fit nicely together.

Impression: This is a must have for the base game as it improves it in almost every way. The villagers add a new dimension to the game and make it easier or more challenging. The moon crystals definitely help the monks, but the extra ghosts and incarnations are really difficult to defeat. It changes the base game without making it feel unbalanced and moving it closer to the theme. I think the expansion has excellent value and I don't think I will ever play the base game without it.

Fluff Text: I was looking for something to spice up a New Year's Eve party and found this little gem. Didn't have anything like this in my collection, it sounded fun and the production values were quite good so it got purchased.

It served it's reason wonderfully providing over 2 hours of fun for 4 players and we only played a short version (just up to 10 points), but I can tell this is a very good game with lots of potential.

Impression: So far I can say I was amazed at the smooth finishing touches on all the components and the high-quality look of the game once it is set up. It also provides lots of funny stories that become quite memorable (Alladin attacking a mountain just to get one last Destiny point). It indeed is fun. Not to be played too often, but has it's part in any collection. Just random enough to give you the feeling that you might just make it through before crushing you hopeless.

Final Rating: A talented 7.5

Fluff Text: Bought this after reading about it for a bit. Thought the relationship cards looked cool and I liked the gates mechanic. Along with this one I bought an Arkham Horror Dice Set. This one looked amazing and it was well worth the trouble and the price.

Impression: So far unplayed.

Fluff Text: Bought this for me and one of my friends who is very passionate about the Civilization series on the PC. I hope this proves to be the PC game in a boardgame package.

Impression: Tons of chits and components make this one pretty fiddly. The rules are pretty daunting at first. The cardboard on the Civ sheets is pretty thin. As far as gameplay goes it does what it is supposed to do really well: imitating the PC Civ game. It feels like an epic experience in few hours (3-4). There doesn't seem to be any balancing issues, but more variety (civs especially) would have been nice.

Final Rating: A civilized 8.5

Status: Sold

Why: I had someone in my group with a keen interest in Civilization, we had played no directly confrontational games for a while and the group as a whole got more experienced, so I thought "This might really be it". But it turns out it wasn't. Same kingmaking problems with 3 players that plagued Small World, only with a much more fiddly game and more rules. No matter how much you try, if one of them wants you to go down, you go down and the 3rd person waltzes to victory. I tried it with culture and got banged by the heavy military guys (China vs America and Germany), tried it with military might and got trounced by technology (Romans vs Germany and Russia) and many other times, but these were the most notable. I almost squeezed a victory with the Chinese, but I lost my capital by one point of damage after 2 successive assaults. The next turn I would have had cultural victory. So after it was decided that this game will not get played on the counts of kingmaking, duration, fiddleness and abundance of rules to remember. The only course of action left was to sell it.

Fluff Text: Finally I got a RPGish game with adventure, heroes and leveling up. I also purchased about 6 of the small card expansions. And I ordered 2 of the big ones: Mists and Sands. That is how confident I am that I will like this system.

Impression: I really liked the art and the fluff text on the cards. Ok, so I played this game quite a few times and as far as I can tell, the base game is just a tutorial dicefest for the rest of the expansions. It overstays it's welcome even with the quicker Runebound rules and it feels very repetitive. Kudos to the movement dice and the special events that break up the pace. I can only hope that the expansions will make this more enjoyable, otherwise I will be back on the road to search for a real adventure game.

Final Rating: A dice-feasting 7

Status: Traded

Why: I really did not like the dice combat and with 3+, which seems to be the size of our group lately, it will not get to see any table time due to tremendous amounts of downtime between players turns. So I traded it away for Tannhäuser, which I hope will prove to be a better experience.

Fluff Text: Another Euro game that will have to compete for shelf space with Kingsburg. So far it seems to have the upper hand since it is new, has an elegant design and it has the same basic ideas. Make VP using dice and resolve an event at the end of the turn. If it proves shorter and just as interactive, it will push Kingsburg to the bottom shelf.

Impression: Nice medieval art. Played it once and it was quite a good experience. I had a bit of trouble identifying the cards and figuring out how they are supposed to work, but after that it all came down to strategizing. The first turn it seemed like there was almost nothing I could do with my dice, but by turn 3 there were so many things to do I was having to make tough decisions about which to choose and at what cost. After some more games I can say that it has a nice feeling of development. This game is really something and I think it is one of the best, if not THE best VP game I have at the moment. It feels tense and very strategic, with different games feeling very distinct in accordance to the cards available. Definitely a keeper!

Final Rating: A medieval 8+

Fluff Text: Bought this as a SH from someone and it proved to be one of the more traumatic experiences. The box was all beaten up by the post office and the insert was pretty much destroyed. The components looked good and I will probably buy Tomb: Cryptmaster to have a proper box and insert. This one will serve to add more variety to CM.

Impression: Lots of characters and dice, nice art. Played it once on the easy side of the board. Felt like the game dragged too long and there was definitely a LOT of luckfest dice-rolling. I usually don't mind that, but there were lots of dice and as such hard to manage. The variety of the characters is good, but we did die lots of times to level 1 crypts with very powerful monsters and it takes pretty long to just get back into the game. I actually won this after failing on the last crypt and conceding my final two turns since I had no hope to recruit and equip a party by the time the others would get there. However, I believe this one will get traded since it is not my type of game. Not necessarily a bad game, but just not for my group.

Final Rating: An undergroundish 6.5

Status: Traded

Why: After a not-too-good first experience, my group did not want to give this one a second chance. Therefore it got traded away for some quicker game. The whole "wait 3-4 turns to get a small party going" causes too much downtime and I think that maybe some houserules are required.

Fluff Text: Ordered after heavily researching all the LCG and found this one was the one that satisfied my demands the best. It has multiplayer up to 4, it has a nice theme that I am starting to get familiar with and it has less wipe cards. It is said to provide the deepest experience of the LCGs released so far.

Impression: Opened it up and it looks gorgeous. The sculpts for the roles are amazing and the art on the cards is nice. I like the included board and the insert that holds everything together (once turned over). Played a 3-player melee and was amazed at how well it shines. There was definitely a lot of politics at the table, but we did get a game of 10 power in 2 hours with explaining the rules. After a few more games, a normal game in 3 players lasts about 90 minutes. Played with more people and different decks and I can see the depth of the game. I really like this one a lot and will probably go on to get the other two houses in the game.

Final Rating: A royal kick-ass 9

Status: Keeper

Edit: 5.09.2011 bought second core set.

Fluff Text: Bought this before playing Runebound on a whim. Everyone says it is the "best" expansion for Runebound so the collector in me just had to have it. I hope it will rise to the expectation.

Fluff Text: Bought this before playing Runebound on a whim. There are mixed impressions about this one, but I kinda liked the art and the feeling of heroes vs evil gods. It seemed somewhat cooperative-er than the normal Runebound. Also got the Cities of Adventure Variant to go with it.

Fluff Text: So I traded my Kingsburg + To Forge a Realm for this nice game. Apparently I am moving farther away from euro type games into world domination and questing. I can hear the voices in the back of my head compelling me to buy a nice gateway euro game so that I may be redeemed from the ameritrash wave.

Impression: This game looks awesome! So many miniatures and really nice thick cardboard for the race sheets (unlinke Civilization). Lots of nice card stock for the cards and a really well laid out rulebook. Played it once and it took a long time. Liked the action cards mechanic that streamlined the game, but the fate cards to seem like a dragged out d20 system. Really small chance of succeeding and the fights are pretty straight forward. The pieces looks awesome in action and I am sure that if someone painted them they would look stunning. Overall, I can say that it is a good, long, epic game. Moving armies of demons across the plains to wreck havoc on the elves never felt as satisfying. Wish there was an expansion with more races, variants, without fate cards and that could support more players.

Final Rating: A warring 8

Status: Sold

Why: Nice game. Probably the best so far in the confrontational department. Hidden role selection, hidden victory points and other things make for an interesting game. If there were more factions, more missions and the heroes would actually do something else than try to win artefacts, this could be a very good game. I think this one is one expansion away from becoming a great game, now it's just good. The reasons why this was sold were the duration and the lack of table-time. It lasted way too long for what it does and this does not make it come to the table often enough. We can squeeze 2-3 game of AGoT LCG with different winners in the same time it takes to play one Runewars, but the epicness is pretty much the same. The plastic miniatures were ok, but nothing special. The king-making problems were not that bad since you could not tell who is winning because of the hidden runes.

Fluff Text: Wanted a game of 1 vs many and apparently this one was the most popular. I find myself in the position of playing one vs many in FFA games all the time, so I thought this might be somewhat better. Plus, it fits up to 6 players, so nobody can really complain about the versatility. The art seemed pretty nice and glossy, so I went ahead and took the plunge.

Impression: There are lots of scenarios and lots of expansions available for this one so I think I will not get easily bored by it. I like the art in person too, but the insert of the box could have been better. The CD is just as useless as all the review state. Played all the scenarios as the Zombie Player and I must say it was a nice decent experience with some memorable moments (heroes trying to reach the car with 13 zombies around it) and apart from the learning scenario, the game is pretty balanced with endings coming down to the wire. I also like the fact that it does not burn the brain and it is just a fun, simple, exciting game.

Final Rating: A nerve-wrecking 8.5

Fluff Text: Another game to do the one vs many thing with less luck and more interaction. I really like the combat mechanic that involves hand management and long term strategy. I also think that the theme will appeal to many of my friends and it might work really well as a 2 player game too.

Impression: So far the quality is great! I had 2 miniatures with problems (one arm Witch King and wavey base Nazguls) but FFG dealt with these problems promptly for me. Superb Customer Service! My only complaint is that the characters sheets could have been thicker (I am just being picky), but other than that I am very pleased by everything.

After a few plays I can say that this is a very good game and I can see why people might want an expansion with more cards. The secret missions could use a bit more variety for Sauron and the heroes could do with more quests. Other than that, the game is top notch and it does not last long at all: 2-3 hours once everyone has the rules down. The combat using the cards is great and it does feel very nicely balanced. For me, the game is one big expansion away from being a 10.

Final Rating: An earthly 9

Type: Antagonistic Coop Game

Status: Sold

Why:
It did not see the table in a long time and as much as I like it, my gaming group does not seem to feel the same way. It is a long game and we do not seem to have the necessary time for such an involvement lately. Sold it for a good price to fuel my future purchases. If given the opportunity and if FFG releases an expansion or two for added variety I would purchase again. A good game, but at a bad time.

Fluff Text: After all the latest Ameritrash purchases I felt the need for another VP/economic type of game and this one was it. An improvement over RRT and a reprint with nice distinguishable colours on the cities definitely sealed the deal for me. Plus I love nice graphics and little trains. Also, I felt like this could be the game that will move my cousins away from endless hours of TTR:E and onto slightly heavier games.

Impression: The insert is very functional and the overall quality of the components in great. It is a nice big easy game. The rules are just ~2 pages with pictures and the gameplay is amazing. It gets really close in the end. Played this a few times and I must say it took me by surprise. I expected a slightly more complicated Ticket to Ride, but I got an amazing and well produced game. There is little to no luck and planning ahead does pay off in the end. I will get at least one expansion for this.

Final Rating: A deliverable 9

Status: Keeper, but Sold

Later Edit: Sent an e-mail to Eagle Games and they sent me the bottom half of the box that I needed to make the game box usable. Great customer service! Will order again.

Why: Sold this and the expansion cause I needed some fast cash and I got a good price for it. Most likely I will replace it with Steam and/or First Train to Nuremberg, both which seem to take up less space, offer the same depth and work as well or better with 3+ players.

Fluff Text: Another SH purchase that I found someone selling in my country. I looked into it some while back and it seemed like a nice game, so I thought to try and see what it's all about. I hoped it could scratch the fantasy itch in a very portable format. "Just add dice"

Impression: The box was pretty beat up, but the contents seemed to be in a good shape. Took a look at the rules and the cards, and everything seemed to be ok. If I actually like it I will go buy the expansions with levelling up the characters. Will get back with more opinions after a few games.

Final Rating: N/A

Status: Traded

Why: Did not have the necessary willpower to try and read the rules and walk through a game. There are much better games for this time frame and complexity. Therefore I traded it away as a sweetener.

Fluff Text: Traded my TTR Switzerland expansions for this and it arrived in mint condition. I can not say if it was handled or not before and that is a good thing. Sleeved too! I really think this game will go over well for my group.

Impression: The art on the cards is nice and the fact that the expansion is also included in a bonus. Played this a few times and I must say that it is quite a fast game. It did take more than 60 minutes with 5, but with 3 it takes 30-60 minutes depending on the AP of the players involved. I like the role selection mechanism and although my group did not warm up to it, I think it will be a keeper for the nice mechanics and the small footprint of the game.

Final Rating: An unpredictable 7.5

Status: On probation

Fluff Text: Decided to get yet another coop to mix up some fantasy with some working together to defeat a greater evil or 4. Ordered this over other similar games (*caugh*Pandemic*caugh*) for the flavour of the game and the support I see from the author on the forums on BGG. If I like it enough I will buy expansions too. Just hope it gets played more often than Arkham Horror.

Impression: The box is heavy! This is always a good thing. The components are nice and thick and the art is really great in person, especially the one on the box. The Rulebook is easy to read and I did not have any trouble with my first game. As a general feeling, it is much lighter than Arkham Horror, shorter and more random, with the theme being somewhat shallower. I did like the way each character had their own little thing they were good at, but the randomness of the Darkness Spreads Cards is really a downer for me.
We had a game where just 1 General moved once and we won it easily and 1 game where the Orc and the Dragon just kept going towards the capital with us having no blue or green cards. After these 2 games we decided we will trade this one for something else and stick to AH for long epic cooperative experiences. There is less influence on the bad things in the game, less character development and a pretty random difficulty.
I am sure that people who like Ghost Stories and/or Pandemic will absolutely love this one, but for me it was just a par game with high quality components.

Final Rating: A queer 7

Status: Traded

Why: It just did not click for me. I did not get what all the fuss was about Pandemic, but I believed that a fantasy theme will help me get into the game. Although I can see why it is a good game and liked/loved by many, for me it just did not do. Probably the fact that I was expecting a fantasy Arkham Horror did not aid in this endeavor. Some of the turn-offs were: low hero customization(no items, attributes, development), low (if any) effect on the Darkness Spreads cards and luck of the draw (drawing only red and black when all you need is green and blue, even after going to the inn).

Fluff Text: Traded Tomb and 51st State for this one. It's condition was great and the box is pretty big, although the cardboard from which it is made seems flimsy. I wanted some sort of racing game and this seems like a nice one although I will probably get RoadZterz too.

Impression: Read the rulebook and while the rules themselves seem easy, I think it will take some practice for them to sink in. It seems like a quick fun game with lots of interaction. Will try it this weekend and see what comes out of it.

Final Rating: 6

Status: Sold

Why: I just did not find it as compelling as I would have liked too. It moves pretty slow and if you are not careful with the setup it can take a long time. Also, I was not impressed at all by the idea of the game and I do believe there are better racing games.

Fluff Text: So much for my want of a nice 1v1 or 2v2 skirmish game. tried Memoir and found it way too light and luck driven and expect this one to be different. Lots of expansions and scenarios means a high score on my list. The fact that I can also customize the squads themselves is also a big bonus. Traded Defenders of the Realm for this one.

Impression: Big box full of goodies including extra scenarios, Plano box for organizing and laminated player aids. I love this game already.

Final Rating: Pending

Status: Sold

Why: Even though the game was wonderfully produced, I only managed to play 2 of the introductory scenarios than it never saw table time. It became obvious that the game looked way too daunting for my group and that scared them away. I eventually sold this to get something else. As of yet, what else I do not know.

Fluff Text: Ordered this for the coop & competitive game modes and the fact that I liked the variety of the aliens. It seemed like such a nice game and the different game modes seem to be well developed, none of them being an afterthought.

Impression: Lots of glossy tokens, plastic figures and cards. It looks like a classic Ameritrash game. In the box you will also find the complementary soundtrack CD. I am pretty impresed with the quality of the components and hope that the gameplay will rise to the same standard. Played it once cooperatively and was not impressed by how the game went. We won easily.

Final Rating: Pending

Status: Traded

Why: Found the game to be too slow and way too random. There is some fun in the box, but I did not see it. I just think it is not for my group. Other than that, I think the only way to play it is competitively which is kinda of a bummer. Traded it for Invasion from Outer Space.

Fluff Text: I simply love this game already. It has amazing replayability, backstabbing, negotiation and tons of meta-game. It has all the elements that can make a game great.

Impression: The reprint is as good a quality as one can expect from Fantasy Flight Games. Sadly, I had to toss the insert to make room for the expansions. Other than that I am very pleased with the art, the quality of the cards and the tokens.

Played it a dozen of times with gamers and non-gamers and it was a blast every single time. Why did I wait so long to get this?
