A well-attended end to a successful 2010 for WABA. This was the 3rd annual WABAcon/ Decembacon. In addition to the increased numbers of door prizes, there were a number of pre-arranged events and a trade table.

The aim was to beat December 2009's record of 61 games played. Did we do it? Add to the list below and we'll find out . . .

This was a pre-arranged event which ran throughout the day, with a draw taking place later in the afternoon for one player to win a copy as part of the world-wide launch of this game.

I took part in four consecutive games of The Resistance, played with 8 players (1st three games) and 7 players. Fun as a party game, I suppose.

One of the big games for Decembacon.

Game started off well with the 3 ports having slightly different rules. We agreed that in the end one port was the most efficient and Liberal, aka Singapore, one was like Australia, with some bureacracy and moderately fast, and one port was like, oh I don't know, a combination of ports with so much bureacracy that you need a container of paperwork just to send the ship into port laugh

A lot of fun but in the end, Priya luckily went to the right tables at the right time and was able to arrive at her final table with only 2 other players. It wasn't long before she took the victory, well done!

New game from Roger with Hong, Ernest, Owen and I also joining up to climb the mountain.

The unique weather system and the card drawing mechanism are interesting with most of us making base camp quite far up the mountain. In the end, it was Hong who won out with one of his climbers at the summit whilst his second one nearly got there too. Roger was the only one to have a fatality as one of his climbers suffocated and fell a small distance of around 7000 metres.

A fun game

A new filler from the collection as Anita, Priya, Ernest and I tried to beat the money market.

Priya and I went on a similar strategy of trying to just get one set of currency but it was Ernest's diversification that put him in front and won the game!

Not a bad filler, to be played over multiple rounds

My first time with this game with the experienced trio of Tim, Andrew and Gracie and our intrepid leader, Aidden.

Things started out okay and it wasn't long before we'd gotten our first treasure (the Golden Lion) with only a few of the outlying places sinking. Things started getting pretty tough when the centre of the island became inundated with water but a superb move by Tim was able to save our path. However, after getting the last treasure, very few pieces of the island was left and the group had become slightly separated. Taking a risk, I devised a bold plan to use our last Helicopter lift to move the remainders near to the helipad. Luckily we drew the card back and we were on our way. With the helicopter in site we were all confident ... until the helicopter sank.

Interesting co-op which does suffer some of the problems of Pandemic but not to the same extent, and is a lot more fun than Pandemic too.
Thanks to Andrew for demoing the game for me

Newly returned from the US with this in tow, Tim taught it to Stephen, Graeme, Gracie and me.

Now, some might suggest that continually poking fun at Tim's predilection for teaching games without the correct rules is somewhat mean spirited and not especially funny, as he does try to teach a lot of games. However, I am not one of those people! It amuses me greatly that, when learning a game from my good friend, I am now surprised when we don't have a game-changing rule discovery part way through, and I was not surprised on this occasion.

Understanding the concept that making a booking does not allow you to grab up a third of a ship load of tourists had substantial effect on the play, and actually made me feel like I wouldn't mind playing this again.

More importantly, Gracie really liked it!

Taught by Graeme to Tim, Gracie and me.

A somewhat aesthetically challenged game, it took a little while to get our heads around the rules explanation and quite a while longer to understand how to play effectively. Once understood, I'd say that it's a game that looks light (reminded me a bit of Thurn and Taxis) but plays deep.

I won, although I couldn't tell you how... Tim and Graeme believed I took best advantage of their wrangling with each other, and as that sounds both flattering and like something I'd do if I understood it, I'll support that supposition.

I felt it was certainly worth another run. Gracie thought it was okay, largely because there is a significant "screw you" factor required to play well.

Rob and I had played this once before, on Friday, we've only just got this one.

Four plucky circus performers are the world's last, best hope against two implacable alien invaders.

This was a game of last minute scrabbling heroics, and there was a real sense of tension as the humans mowed down aliens, with increasing desperation as one of their number had been killed earlier.

The humans needed to kill twenty of the fragile aliens, and the aliens just need to kill two Heros.

The aliens' deployment of a Death Ray wreaked carnage as well, and it was really down to the wire as a badly wounded, near death Hero, the Human Bullet, I think? decapitated the 20th alien, both reaching into cards and special abilities at the last moment to try to get the victory.

Earth won but what an epic battle and congratulations to both sides for a really hard fought, very evenly matched battle.

Meenu Meenu Meep!

Rob and I taught this to four people whose names and scores I wrote carefully down on the table's record sheet. Dean, Matt, Steve and was it Ty?

The game went reasonably well, and fast, about 4 and a half hours play time, leaving us time for a comfortable lunch and a game of Invasion Earth: The Martian Game afterwards.

Rob beat Dean by one point, and I think I came neck and neck with someone else, but can't remember who!

Learning game with Paul, Ivette, Neil and Owen. Played with the Big trucker expansion to enable 5 players. Challenging with increased rarity of bits making for some unshapely designs.

Chaotic fun though Owen was a bit upset when bits fells off his ship.

Definitely better with players with a few games under the belt so will keep working at training victims er more truckers up.

Had a teaching game of this ( using Rogers set...er, hope that was Ok?) with Paul after we finished our TS match...after intending to run thru the mechanics it then turned into a full blown game, with me taking the gunned up US Paratroopers against Paul's defending Germans...Roger ended up joining with Paul mid game, so I guess you could count this as a 3 player game.

Despite having masses of firepower, and smoke covering most of the map, I forgot one of the basic lessons....don't forget to MOVE!

By the time the clock ran down, I had bagged a lot of Germans, at no loss to the US, but lost the game by a massive margin due mainly to failure to capture any signifigant real estate.

Still, always an interesting game and the lack of control over what your troops can do adds to the overall enjoyment ( most of the time...).
