Time for a new set of Gaming Resolutions for the new year!

Last year was a mixed bag in terms of success, partly because I lost two full months of the year to a family health crisis and partly because I am still learning how best to set these particular goals.

This year I am staying away from vague goals as well as goals that require other people or game companies to do things. A good example of the latter was hoping that GMT would have second edition rules out for Fields of Fire, which didn't happen.

This year I am also adding in a few more "Euro" goals in addition to the wargaming goals just to lighten things up and to keep me from spending all of my time playing wargames.

Thanks for following along, and I hope you enjoy the list!

Goal: Learn ASL Starter Kit #1 and play through at least five scenarios.

I own far too much ASL stuff for it to sit unplayed in my closet, so this year I plan to learn at least the ASL Starter Kit #1 rules and play through a handful of scenarios. I may join a local group, the Berzerk Commissars, which play in the area regularly, to facilitate this.

Goal: Attend an out-of-state wargaming convention.

I already attend the local GameStorm con, as well as our own presumptuously titled "WBC West" nano-con in Sunriver in May. However, I really want to get out of town this year and experience a real wargame con again. This will probably mean I go to either the GMT Games West con in April or October, or else BottrosCon in Vancouver, BC or thereabouts. The latter seems more "exotic" and will line up better with my gaming calendar as it's in November.

Goal: Develop a game app for the iPad.

I got an iPad last year, and it's been a fantastic laptop replacement for me. I was also a pretty good coder back in the day, although I haven't done it for years. The iPad seems like a good platform to develop for, especially since there's a dearth of true wargames and it's been extremely popular. Plus, no large startup costs to purchase a development environment, as Xcode comes free on the Mac.

My initial plan is simple - implement VPG's Israeli Independence, the first of their States of Siege series. This is a very simple game with a built-in AI and simple graphics that will fit nicely on the iPad screen, and will also allow me to create a code bed that I can potentially use to implement other games in the series if I so choose to.

Goal: Concerted effort to get more classic Euros on the table when I host game night.

I have a lot of very good Euros that don't see a lot of play - Euphrates & Tigris, Samurai, Union Pacific, Elfenland, Medici, etc. My goal is to get at least one of these on the table every week I host game night (every four weeks). I reserve the right to determine what is considered a "classic" as I see fit. ;-)

Goal: Begin a long term study of World War 2 in Europe.

This goal is actually a sort of combination of two goals/ideas from two of my gaming friends. The first is from Dave, who likes to read up on a subject and then game it. The second is from Eric, who thought of playing several games on a subject at different levels of detail, working either in or out in scope.

I am starting a long-term (multi-year, probably a decade or more) project to work my way through the war in Europe chronologically, starting with the Spanish Civil War as it was really the dividing line between the old style trench warfare of the Great War and the blitzkrieg of the Second.

The plan is to choose some reading on the subject, then play one or more games that cover the conflict, preferably at the operational level, but also one or two battle level games. For the SCW, I have a few candidates:

The Spanish Civil War - Just out this past month from GMT Games, this looks to be very accessible and will be my starting point.

Arriba Espana - Early Firefight Games title, this one has a tiny map and tiny counters. Should be quick to learn and play.

Guadalajara - SCS title from The Gamers/MMP. This is the only non-campaign game I have on the conflict, so also a good starting point for a more focused examination.

EuroFront - This game, while grand strategic in scope, does allow you to play the SCW on it's own. Not sure it's a great game, but it will be a good introduction to that system if nothing else.

I may or may not play all of these games, but I expect to play at least two over the coming year.

Since this goal is long term, there are no specific goals for how far I plan to get over the course of the year, and I may end up getting into the Invasion of Poland before year's end. I also plan to start a new GeekList covering the various games I'm playing rather than cover it here in greater detail. Once I get started with the project I'll list the book(s) I'm reading and the games I'm playing there. Link to be added soon.

Goal: Play a large-scale 2nd Fleet scenario with Chuck, probably at WBC West in May.

Probably a goal that doesn't belong here, as it's kind of a fait-accompli, but it is a large-scale goal for the year so here it is.

Goal: Solo six different Runebound scenarios.

I've had Runebound for a few years now, but I've only really played once or twice. It's a very interesting system, although largely multi-player solitaire and tedious with more than two people. I have most of the boxes (Isle of Dread, Frozen Wastes, Sands) as well as the various campaign card sets (although not so much the items or characters). Time to work through them!

I don't like the "timed" version for solitaire, it really doesn't work well because you have so few turns to get anything done, and it's nearly impossible to even start to work through the decks and level your character up. As such, I'm going to play without the timing element, using the game as a story-telling device rather than to be competitive. I plan to play with a single character until they die (if that's possible, been a while since I've played) then move on to another. I will, however, use expansion-specific characters in the big box expansions.

Not sure how many I'll get through, but a rate of about one game every two months should keep it fresh without becoming onerous. I plan to start with the base set, then use the adventure packs one at a time, then eventually get to the box sets which introduce a lot more rules.
