Tim brought this and taught it to me and five others (Richard, Chris, William, Rob and Leece) in a 7 player game. One of the latest hot games, it involves trying to get the most victory points at the end in whatever combination of military victories, scientific developments, building one of the seven wonders of the ancient world or other various methods while utalising, amongst other things, a card drafting technique. From memory, Tim won this game.

I, and others, were so impressed that we immediately played a second game with 6 players (Chris, Richard, William, Matt, Eric and I) that Richard managed to win on 56, (Matt 51, Chris 45, Eric 43, William 37, me on 36).

This is a great quick game (can play as quickly as 30 mins with experienced players) that can accommodate many (up to 7) players, a rarity in boardgaming. Multiple paths to accrue points makes for interesting and varied game play, while the different wonders themselves provide greater variation. This game rightly deserves its current popularity and was played throughout the day.

No one should be surprised that this popular WABA game (see http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/590307/waba-hotness-2010) made another appearance at WABA.

Nathan (Kara "Starbuck" Thrace), Chris (Helena Cain-starting Admiral), myself (Galen Tyrol), Eric (Ellen Tigh-starting President) and Emily (Karl "Helo" Agathon) played with Pegasus and New Caprica. In short, the humans managed to reach New Caprica but two incorrect executions, one revealed cylon (Ellen) and one unrevealed cylon (Galen) were too much for the humans, who lost on population.

A full session report should be coming soon.
A full session report can be found here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/6072207#6072207

The last game of the day was a 8 players game of Category 5 (also known as 6 takes). Essentially, cards are numbered from 1 to 103ish, each player getting 10. Each card has at least 1 'negative symbol' (for want of a better term) on it; some have more. You want to collect the least number of 'negative symbols'. After simultaneously choosing and revealing a card, players either take cards if theirs is the lowest number of the cards in the play area or if by playing their card, theirs is the sixth in the row. Lowest points wins.

In this game, Simon won with 24, over Richard on 34 and Warren on 47 (Warren scored 29 the first round but came back spectacularly). The rest were Tim 53, Paul 56, Alaistair 73, myself on 80 and Nathan 83.

Despite this terrible and incomplete description, this light game was a good way to end the day. It's:
-skillful enough for tactics and skill to be a non-random factor;
-light enough that there is some luck in the cards one gets and when people play theirs;
-fun enough that you cheer when you avoid taking a row and mock others when their previously thought of safe card suddenly has them taking many 'negative symbols'; and
-quick enough to finish in 20-25 mins.

This is one of a growing number of lighter games that WABA is slowly getting and should be getting more plays in the future.

My current favourite.
Played with Dean and Owen on the hard route, winter weather (Dean already had 1 game under his belt).

Dean scoffed when my climber turned back before reaching the summit. Dean reached the peak but then both climbers died from lack of acclimatisation for a score of 2. Owen was too cautious (doesn't like dying) and ended with 11 pts. Roger won with 14 pts.

Played this with the kids for the first time. Agree with Ernest for the need for some good fillers in the collection of which this is one.

This was my first time at the club and along with Rowland, Meg and Scott, Elaine taught us a few games we hadn't played before.

Hindsight would say I shouldn't have thrown out my long route at the beginning of the game but I managed to snag the bonus points for longest route and completed another 5 short routes and managed to come in second to Elaine by 2 points.

Tyrone and Greg finished a game and Steve and I paused at the start of Turn 4. This was of course part of the current Twilight Struggle Super (Power) Series, with your truly still clear at the top with 6 wins.

Looking forward to my first loss with 30 matches still to play by all involved.

Look for this game to be played religiously at every meet for the next few months!

My second game for the day, again taught by Elaine. Unfortunately I was the target of the thief twice early in the game and couldn't get many districts out until the last couple turns of the game. Elaine seemingly had it wrapped up very early and with bonus points trounced even second place by about 10 points.

Settlers is the game which got me looking at the board game section in Tactics but this was the first time I'd played it against people. I knew the rules from playing the iPhone version a few times.

I had some good luck racking up resources and quickly picked up the longest road and 5 settlements. Pretty soon along with a bonus point from one of the cards I played my 3rd soldier and grabbed largest army for the win.

In my quest to collect every camel related game I picked this one up recently and hoped to give it it's maiden play at the meet by roping in Dean, Tim and Eric. The game is basically a deduction game played over a number of rounds (equal to the number of players) where you try to navigate a goods laden camel train through the desert without having too many goods stolen by thieves along the way. Generally the impression was that it was a good game that allowed for some strategy and deduction but also involves a good dose of guessing/luck, Tim was the clear winner but all scores were fairly close. Will definitely play again but it can be a bit of a brain burner and prone to AP so multiple plays in a day is probably not going to happen. Only 3 out of 4 thumbs up from the crew with Dean vowing never to play it again but he obviously is a camel hater.

Dean, myself and a lovely lady whose name I forget (not sure I caught it when she introduced herself) settled down for a couple of games of this set collecting card game while waiting for lunch to arrive. I did manage to take out both games, not that it was really relevant, but it was nice to play this sort of cool down game after the significantly more brain damaging Timbuktu with a couple of very pleasant players.

Taught a 4 player of this with Mark, Mike and Lami.

Thought it would be a quick 45 min filler but I think it ended up being close to twice that. I think 3 of us had 4 areas captured near end game (needing 5 for a win) so every round counted. Mike eventually scooped the victory with judicious play of a surrender card.

I think everyone enjoyed the game (even if you don't Warren!)

another game available in the WABA collection.

This one went a lot longer than normal as it took a long time for the haunt to happen, and by the time it did all the heroes were in pretty good nick - making it pretty hard for the Bugmeister.

I taught this one to Phil, Pete and Jacob. Obviously taught it far too well (or else my penchant for making a flashy move instead of the strategically correct move caught up with me), because Pete won comfortably, and I came a miserable last, not getting anyone out of the cellar.

Jacob taught this to Phil, Pete and me. He was insistent that we should lose our first game, and we duly did, without much fuss. I then retired to eat lunch (what else would you do after the world has been wiped out by a pandemic), and Jacob, Phil and Pete indulged in a three person game. They seemed to be doing much better without me

Leece, Rob, Dean and I were the superheroes, while zombie controller Sue attempted to extract our brains. Sue engineered a superhero death very early in the game, and the situation looked grim. However, some nifty shooting by Dean started to improve the situation, and Leece's priest stormed into action once he had the chain saw to wield. Rob's drifter also enjoyed attacking and killing zombies. There was plenty of chit chat amongst the superhero players, as we sought to optimise our strategy. Eventually my superhero (Sally, the sweetheart) got into a bit of zombie clobbering with the baseball bat, which nearly lead to the defeat of the superheroes. She took a wound, but managed to fend off the zombie before she was deaded. In the excitement, I forgot to use my special power. Sigh. Dean then managed to kill the fifteenth zombie, giving the superheroes victory.

According to Leece, a very close game.

I am not generally a fan of co-operative games (I'm too competitive to enjoy them), but this one was good fun.
