It's time for the 2nd Game Design contest in which BGG's Greek Guild members participate.

Last year we organized the contest just for fun, but things turned out unexpectedly well, especially for the winner of the contest, Vangelis Bagiartakis, whose game Souvlaki Wars will soon be published by Kaissa Chess & Games.

You can watch some presentation videos from the 1st contest, however they are all in greek:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/51460/1os-diagonismhos...

This year we have tried to organize the whole event better and be more official while at the same time retain the mood of a friendly community. The biggest change is that this time there will be a 5-member-jury that will play the games two weeks before the actual public ceremony. They will secretly vote on them and then, on February 13th, at the "Stratos Vasilikos" hotel in Athens the public will be invited to come and not only play the games but also vote for the one they liked the most. Thus, two awards will be given: One from the jury and one from the public.

The aim of this contest is to motivate boardgamers in Greece to create their own boardgames and maybe even get the chance to publish them later. It is also a great opportunity for the designers to have their games played by many people and get valuable feedback from them.

I would like to thank for their support and interest in this contest:

- Kaissa Chess & Games which also sponsored the hall in which the public presentation ceremony will be held.

- Ε.Σ.ΠΑΙ.ΡΟ.Σ. ( ESPAIROS - Hellenic Club of Role Playing & Strategy Games) where the presentation to the jury will be held, and its president, Tasos Grigoriadis.

- Fantasy Shop

- Playce cafe (specialized in boardgaming) and its owner, Kostas Chiotelis

- On-line shop boardgameguru and its owner Paul Lister for providing a prize for the winners.

And of course last, but not least, Aldie & Derk, founders of this special site.We owe them our existence as a community.

Here is the poster of the contest created by GiannisS, using a photo created by Fidel Lainez

Well, here are the 2011 participants in alphabetical order. You may have already encountered some of them as they reached "The Hotness" a few days ago.

Description:

Autokrator (emperor) is a medieval strategy wargame, about the wars from 8th to 10th century A.D. between the Holy Roman Empire, the Moors, the Saracens and the East Roman Empire (Byzantines). The 4 players must take the role of one of the above factions and they have to protect their cities and to expand their empire.

The players have 3 characters to use per round, the Autokrator (emperor), the General, and the Admiral, with special abilities for each character. The game has 8 rounds, and in the end of every round (except the 3rd and the 6th) the players win or lose victory points based on the territories that they have.

Description:
A light civilization game that promises hard development choices and many pathways to victory in almost an hour. Players explore for natural resources and strive to research the principles that defined civilization through the progression of three periods: archaic, middle ages and modern. Victory is achieved traditionally or perhaps by a special condition, in a game where John Milton's Paradise Lost may be as important as the Pyramids.
Choose the aXiΩms that will make your civilization unique and thrive in an era of consequence!

Description:

Briefcase is a deck-building and resource management card game.

In Briefcase, players build their own business empires by acquiring and activating various companies. Each company, once activated, provides the player with some benefits (which are called decisions cards) and a special ability for the rest of the game.

Players start with identical decks of decision cards. Each time one player activates a company, he/she adds to his deck more decision cards. Decision cards give the players various possible actions (like buy/activate/hire/void). The most important is the "buy" action, with which players can either buy a building or a resource from the market.

Description:

In Drum Roll each player takes over the role of a circus owner in the mid 1900s. Each player moves around Europe hiring performers and giving shows.

There are five main categories of performers.

The Animal Tamers, the Acrobats, the Extraordinary, the Magicians and the Jugglers/Clowns. Each of them have different demands, the player must fulfill in order to give thier best performance.

The requirements which vary between performers are, Rehearsals, Equipment, Supplies, Costumes and Promotion.

There are 3 levels of performances that each performer can end up doing in a show. A poor one, a good one and an outstanding one. The higher the level of performance, the more requirements each performer will have in order to do it.

The better the performance, the more each player can get out of it. When performers do outstanding performances, the player must choose between getting the maximum amount of benefit out of them, or get the Prestige Points they are offering. There are also other ways to improove a circus such as trailers, investments and personnel that will help your performers do their best.

After the third show the game ends and the player who has gathered the most Prestige Points is the winner.

Title: Ιστορίες του Πελοποννησιακού Πολέμου
(Tales Of Peloponnesian War)

Designer:

Description:

Tales Of Peloponnesian War is a strategy board game for 2-6 players. Two powerful alliances struggle for control of Ancient Greece: On one side we have Peloponnesian Alliance (leading by Sparta, Thebes, Corinth), on the other side Athenean Hegemony ( leading by Athens, Argos, Corfu). The game design approaches the War based on Thucydides' (the father of "scientific history") "History Of The Peloponnesian War" by using his quotations and events of this era such as Olympic Games or prophecies from Oracle of Delphi.
