A small but dedicated group of gamers came together to play. There were both newer and not so new games played with new and not so new members.

There were two games of this played with several people learning it for the first time. In the first game, David won with 51 points, over Tyrone 49, Nathan 48, Tim 46, Richard 44 and Jason and myself on 35. In the second game, Mark won with 72 over Jason 53, Tim 44, David 43, Tyrone 40 and myself on 29. Both games were won by people playing for the first time

I am constantly amazed at the combined simplicity of learning the game and the varying strategies possible to win (not that I managed that, but anyway...)

Tim referred this game as 'the thinking man's Carcassonne' (a description he later modified) and in many respects, I understand what he means. It's a tile placement game that also has some buying/selling elements.

Jason won with 64, over David 43, Tim 36, myself 33 and Tyrone 20. Jason benefited from good tile draws, clever tile placement (village creation) and no one else realising that we were letting him get good (in this game) tiles. This gamer's game is worth playing again (especially to see how much tile draws affect the game).

Five factions led by Jason, Tim, myself, Tyrone and David battled within a company. People loyal to us could become the CEO, sit on the board of directors, become outside counsel, become head of a division and manage (employees) in a division. Did I forget to mention that you can also attempt to bribe other players, fulfil your secret objective and buy shares in the company? Players try to gain 4 victory points by moving up on various scales (including corruption and influence).

It's not so much an economic game (although it has an economic theme and is economic in nature) as a strategy game within an economic framework. People get promoted and fired, the board of directors gets to elect a new CEO and the heads of divisions get extra abilities (eg HR can hire more people if morale is lower). This is a game that I think is very difficult to convey in words.

Jason managed a win in this game, fulfiling his secret objective and gaining 3 other victory points elesewhere (from shares, influence and something else).

This was the first time I had played Bohnanza with three people and I couldn't improved my bean farming playing with less people. Andrew won with 24 over David 23 and myself 18.

I seem to have played quite a few revently released games this time...

Defenders of the Realm (DotR) is a cooperative game where adventures are trying to kill four evil generals before their minions overrun the land, the generals reach the central city, too many ares are tainted or the central city is overrun with minions. Different fantasy staple characters (eg Cleric, Dwarf, Eagle Rider, Paladin etc.) different powers.

Andrew described this game similar to Pandemic with a fantasy theme. Certainly this is more thematic and stimulating than Pandemic, with the varied characters (both good and bad) and locations lending itself to a suitably enhanced session report (compare something like 'my Ranger defeated three orc minions, slaying them in combat in the Gryphon Forest' to 'I cured some disease in New York').

Andrew, first timer Bert, David and I decided to try save the land. Our first two plays ended in quick failure with the land becoming too tainted. This, Andrew discovered, was because we had set up the game incorrectly, making it far too difficult for us.

Our third time was more successful, with an Eagle Rider (myself), Paladin (David), Ranger (Andrew), and Sorcerer (Bert) traversing the land (Andrew finding a unicorn) and defeating three of the four evil generals (my Eagle Rider delivering the killing blow on two of them) before loosing with too many tainted areas.

Tim, Mark, Tyrone and Jason set out for some swashbuckling adventure.Captain Tyrone and Captain Jason were at the helm of their first commands.
Captain Mark showed them the ropes before being let loose on the seas of the Carribean.

Captain Mark decided to fly the Jolly Roger and Terrorise the merchant vessels of the other brave captains. Piracy and plundering seemed as though it would pay off nicely until traders decided to seek comfort in many guns and armed sailors by upgrading to galleons. A devious English-Dutch trap lead to Markbeards demise with a British naval ship appearing just in time to literally scuttle his hopes and save Trader Tims Flute.

Captain Tyrone had been trading very well and was looking as if victory was assured until delayed and detoured by weather an pirates allowing captain Jason finally free from Markbeards tyranny to use his new galleon, trading away, before revealing his stash for the win and the glory!

This game just keeps getting better with more plays. While not a strategy masterpiece, the narrative it creates is captivating.

Great fun!

A game I generally dislike but played for the first time with 2 players against Andrew. Quite a different game with only 2, Andrew and I seemed to be the most peaceful of the Citadel citizens as the Assassin was not used and the thief only once.

In the end, I managed to get a win from a lucky Architect draw allowing me to build my 8th precinct.

Interested to try the expanded roles next time

A new found co-op which both Warren and I think are under-rated. Playing with Aidden, Gracie and Andrew, we pitted ourselves against the guard and guard dog trying to find the keys and break the safe. Fortune smiled on us as Aidden managed to find 2 keys, but only after 10 minutes had passed with Gracie finding another one with 15. Andrew managed to not move / go to jail quite a bit with myself springing him for the final time and Andrew sprinting to get around the heat sensor - unlocking the final key.

The race was on as we all sprinted towards the Safe with Andrew a few squares away, Gracie rolled the dog who jumped out onto patrol. With time falling short it came down to Aidden or I and I luckily rolled the collar sending the dog home again and letting Andrew run to the safe, put in the final key and we rejoiced in the sweet sounds of the William Tell Overture.

Played twice with 5 players, Tim, Jason, Ernest, Tyrone and myself. Fun and clever little game with myself winning the first game somehow on only 6 points.

The 2nd game went to Tyrone with well timed card taking

Played again later with Andrew, Aidden, Nathan and Gracie with Gracie taking the title

Played with Nathan - an interesting pattern recognition game.

Not a bad little game but not really designed for 2 players.

Another filler game with the big moment being Aidden outbidding Andrew for the Space Station at "any" cost - 7. In the end Gracie ended up being the great real estate guru winning with a score in the 60s.

Introducing Nathan, Gracie, Andrew and Aidden to this creative thinking game. After explaining the rules, everyone got down to building their factory and generally enjoying the experience although frustration was apparent at times when colours didn't fit where they were supposed to laugh

In the end, I ended up winning with all having fun along the way.
