There was a great turnout of WA boardgamers, despite the 38C heat, for this monthly meet. Yet again WABA members showed that they've got their fingers on the pulse of modern boardgames, with an eclectic selection of games played that included the hotness, old greats and many in between.

Lauren and I warmed up with this two-player Kosmos classic whilst we waited for games of Castle Ravenloft and Forbidden Island to end so that we could populate the Starcraft universe with a few more gamers.
A tense game which I was dominating until Warren chastised me for beating up on the pregnant lady. Needless to say, Lauren won comfortably from that point on.

A six player epic encounter, with two who knew the rules fairly well, two who knew them barely and two who hadn't a clue. It was Lauren, Ian, Eric, Scot, Rory and myself (in no particular order). I haven't played this with so many and, having to teach and keep track of what everyone was doing to make sure no 'mistakes' in resource allocation occurred meant that I was never in the running. Ian had to leave whilst in the lead after an unfortunate incident with his car and his place was taken by another Starcraft noob, Damian. It's a great testament to the design and playtesting of this game that, after five hours of play, what turned out to be the last round saw 5 out of 6 players in serious contention to win. Eric took it out by the narrowest of margins, due mainly to his having chosen the Aldaris Protoss faction and no one else having closed the game out a little earlier in the day.

I love the theme and the tense decision making, but a 6 player learning game of Stracraft is not something that I'm keen to repeat any time soon.

Won it, learned it, played it, sold it.

Andrew, Grace and Tyrone where about to start a game when I arrived so I thought I'd give it one more go before condeming it forever.

Good game this. Gracie squeaked home in a tight one.

This one felt like we were being dragged through the whole era in real time.

A game that promises so much if you read the box but delivers .... no it doesn't even deliver.

Andrew, Gracie, Tyrone, Hong and I muddled through this one with Hong taking out a victory.

El Grande by name and nature. A terrific game that holds ground against the cult of the new and has done for 15 years.

Andrew romped away with this one, beating Gracie, Tyrone, Matt(?) and I.

Always happy to teach this to anyone that is interested. Perhaps the game I teach next Claremont meet.

Awesome Rally themed game with some nice timing mechanisms.

Dice represent gears but in a manner different to formula De. Nice components and simple rules make for a great push your luck style game with some luck mitigation.

Two games played. One four player with Ernest, Mark J, Jason F and I.
The second a two player game between Jason F an I Again.

Ernest winning the first and Jason the second.

If you like racing games then you should check this out!

A heavy euro of worker placement and role selection.

A burdensome game to tech, Jason did a fantastic job teaching first timers AP Ernest and Mark J.

Good Times all around with Mark running away with the game in the end.

A quick twenty minute filler. Fast and confrontational area control with role selection. I have enjoyed all my plays of this game so far. Good stuff.

We started with a 6-player game of Parade while we waited for folks to show up. Gracie won by a mile.

Then Jess, Dean, John, Elaine and I played Samarkand, which is essentially a really light rail game, but with camels. You have to marry into families to take control of their trade routes.

I think we had a couple of minor rules wrong, but the game was a lot of fun and also really beautifully produced.

I think we need to buy a copy - Jess and I loved it, anyway, and I know our regular gaming friends will too.

Next was Dream Factory with Elaine, John, Jess and I.

Eh, it wasn't bad, but it also wasn't very exciting. I'm not sure if I don't like auction games, or there just wasn't enough going on in this one.

You just bid for the crew you want and then attach them to unproduced screenplays and try to have the highest star ratings.

I just feel like it needed something else.

I would play it again, I guess, but not by choice.

Last, for us, was Torres, played with Elaine, David, myself and Jess.

I liked this quite a bit. It's an area control game with nice 3D pieces.

There's a lot of thinking going on and there are a lot of options, but also a lot of restrictions, so you have to think pretty carefully about every move you make. I think all of us at least once had a whole turn planned out (5 action points each per turn) and realized it completely didn't work.

A game I would be very interested in playing again.

Played this 5 players with Mark(cleric), Ian(rogue), Ernest(ranger), Aidden(warrior) and me(wizard). I think I am the only first timer.

We played one of the earlier scenario (2 I think) and it's an interesting game. Quite interesting dungeon crawling/intro D&D.

We finished the game successfully with a few potential hairy moments but Mark was great with cleric and healed us up pretty well.

Good gateway to the D&D world.

Played this with 4 people Elaine, Elise, me and Hong (so many E's!)

Think Elaine is the only one who've played this version although I've played transamerica before.

It is semi-interactive and it's interesting to see people contemplating strategies as to whether to connect or not. I think I am a sucker at connecting tracks which is to my detriment.

Elise won the game by a mile (being on 12 while Hong was on 4, Elaine on 1 and me -4 or 5.

Personally I find this a bit more luck dependent than transamerica because of how the stations are distributed, but it's a good filler and short and fun.
