This is a one page game using a deck of cards for all the randomization. Often it is good to break out of your design grooves and do something very compact and minimal. I found the image (illustrated by Ivan Billibin) a while back and knew it had the right atmosphere for one of the games in the Wyr series.

the others being: The Seeker in the Forest of Wyr and Land of Enin

I often have trouble playing games people design which use standard playing cards. something abut those ubiquitous card faces that i can't map over to other meanings. so, of course i had to try and make one of my own.

While this game starts out easy. It quickly gets very very hard. I haven't won at it yet actually.

Definitely one of my easy to print games

this was the game that started the rest. my first true board game masquerading as a dice game and though it is a little rough around the edges it has been very well received.

it has been amazing to me to watch people do fan expansions and create new part of the game. that, i think, is the most rewarding aspect of designing games for the BGG community.

i've been wanting to try a dungeon crawl design out for awhile now but had never really found the hook for me (i like to design games that are a bit left field). as many of you know i am an avid reader and i've recently read a short story by Karl Schroeder "To Hie From Far Cilenia", China Mieville's novel The City and The City and this article from a blog i follow - http://bldgblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/baarle-hertog.html.

these 3 things have in common the idea of a mutable city. a city where the locations, rules, physical place-structure is in flux. in the case of Baarle-Hertog, which is a real place, the position of your front door fixes what country you live in. if you do not like that, you simply move your front door location elsewhere. at one time restaurants in one country would close early and if the country border ran through the middle of a restaurant, people would get up, walk to the other side of the restaurant (the other country) and continue eating.

Karl Schroeder's story takes this idea to another level where the alternate cities are internalized within the physical city, depending on which way you walk up or down a staircase, or dress in a particular location, say a particular phrase you may be in one city or another or both simultaneously.

all of these ideas eventually coalesced into this new game. part dream, part mystery, part adventure.

The Search is an unequal war game based on Fox and Geese. One player, the criminal, must commit 3 heinous crimes in the city of Val Justinia before the other player, taking on the role of the police, captures him. Both players use cards to add to movement in the game or do other special bonuses.

The map cards used in the game are the same ones as those used in Aether Captains: Clockwork Cabal, tying the physical places of the 2 games together. In fact, one of the crimes takes place right outside of the Society of Clockwork Engineers Society Hall. I will be placing this artwork on Artscow in the coming weeks.

3 new Aether Captains games designed to all use a single deck of 54 cards, which is something I have not seen much of yet in the PnP community.

These games came about because I had wanted to fill an artscow order that was short a few cards. In the process I developed these three very different games, all built for 2 players since that has been a request, though Celinian Trader can be played solo as well, and they've all been playtested quite a bit.

I am also excited about these because they are designed to be compact to play and portable to carry around. As I mentioned in a previous thread I am making a commitment to design Aether Captains games to use the same components, so PnPers do not have to stock all sorts of different things to play my games.

I feel this really represents a big advance in my game design skills.

i liked the idea of this express game and decided to create a private version using a map i found and re-configuring some of the game designer's graphics. i slightly re-positioned some of the locations to allow for better graphic visibility when playing and they all match logical places on the map

Re-Design

I've been working on a re-design of this game for a couple of weeks now. This has been a fun job for me. In part, I undertook the re-design to research this type of story game and be able to take it apart and put it back together, to help with my next game design.

My goals have included making the rules and events books easier to read, designing a set of counters to assist in-game bookkeeping and re-designing the map for visual clarity.

I am modest enough to say this re-design is not in the same class as the amazing work on other venerable games like Merchant of Venus and Magic Realm, but I think I've done the game justice.

designed originally for the Quick PnP contest. i ended up not entering it. for those who like word games it is quick to learn, can support 1-4 players and has a couple of variants. i spent some time balancing the letter repeats in order to make viable word choices in the game. the font used was also important because certain letters need to be read right side up or upside down and have the same letterform shape.

This is an express retheme of Sanitago de Cuba wherein players are Flower buyers for a King and must buy and ship the flowers in demand back to the palace.

The main image on the board is the frontispiece to Thomas More's original printing of Utopia

You can even print everything up and will not need any eurocubes.

This is my take on a 2 player boxing game. I wanted to create a game where the variability of being left or right handed had some bearing on the strategy. The game involves some quick deck building and plays very fast.

Just uses a standard 54 cards, no other components required.

Re-Design
After Barbarian Prince I quickly jumped into redesigning this game by Eric Lee Smith. It has a lot going for it and was advanced for its time in light of things boardgamers are seeking these days:

co-operative play for 1-6 (including, I think, a strong solitaire option though there is a lot to keep track of)
tile laying for variable play
combines RPG and boardgame elements
option for campaign style play

I redesigned the components for today's cube and track style of play rather than pencil and paper, as well as enlarging all the counters and dungeon tiles for easier readability.

Also added was a Combat Board (seen to the left) which forms the center of the play area.

Due to copright issues I am unable to post the reformatted rules on BGG.
Definitely worth checking out.

Re-Design

this game immediately struck me as to its playing viability. very good integration of theme and ideas. i decided to re-design the artwork once i found a portfolio of german alternative currency used during world war 2.

the particular currency note i used had a great map on it and drove the design. the graphic design is somewhat edwardian in feel i think. there is a reference map on each city sector card for its position on the larger map. i also designed 6 card position areas below the map for the 6 types of guilds for easier reference when playing.

based on the ancient roman game "Jactus" this was a fun game to create. i used artwork for an 18th century set of engineering playing cards. this game is really a game in a game. it is officially an Aether Captains game but in the narrative story i explain this is a game sailors and soldiers play in the off duty hours aboard the zeppelins. even the emperor has a set carved from narwhal horn.

This is a very good microgame by Reiner Knizia which is not available from its spanish publisher.

I redesigned the game with a japanese theme (adding an extra location to match the major regions of Japan) and a very minimal (for me) look

the colors chosen are kimono fabric dye colors

Solo game using a single card deck and a few tokens. Borrowed the coordinate mechanic from Forbidden Desert to have the locations of the fuel tanks be a bit harder to track down in a game. I think more games should use this coordinate idea.

Re-Design

re-design of dice components. available for download. this ended up being the most dice i ever crafted at one time. the game is an interesting one of tile laying adjacencies done instead with dice. i chose to use ornamental italian mosaic patterns for the die faces
