It was a cold day, but there was some hot gaming as the latest WABA sensation made its debut.

The latest WABA sensation is not exactly this game, but the Toy Story 3 version of it (see http://boardgamegeek.com/image/757851/loopin-louie) [until it gets its own listing, I'll have to list it under this game]. I myself played 13 games of it, and I know that it was the loudest game all day.

The club now has a copy for those who want a very light, very fast and very fun dexterity game to start the day, take a break from your heavier games or to end on a quick, smiling note.

Rowland and myself taught Rob and Leece in this 4 player game of racing on the water. They quickly got the hang of needing the right numbers of dice and the right lines to do well, although Leece was unfortunately unable to finish before anyone else. Roland and I were able to use our knowledge of the game to finish first (17 points) and second (10 points) respectively, with Rob only a point behind (9 points).

Jason taught Eric and I this trick taking-type game (which reminded me a lot of the card game Presidents). Essentially, players try to finish their hands of cards first by playing higher types of cards than what someone else put down (single cards, pairs, triples etc.) with various combinations possible and various special conbinations trumping everything else. Scoring is based on what cards one manages to collect which getting rid of your cards and in how many cards the others have when you finish.

The game actually seems to take longer to explain than getting into it, but everything made sense in the end. As usual, I was terrible at the game. We agreed to play first to 200 and Eric managed the win with 203, with Jason on 159 and I on 107. Not scoring for almost 2 rounds didn't help.

BSG+Pagasus

5 players, 1 new player
Mike(?): Baltar (new player)
Myself: Saul Tigh
Eric: Lee Adama
Kris: Dee
Emily: Cain

First turn, Mike uses his starting quorum card (cylon mugshots) to look at my loyalty card. After a bit of questioning from the others, he says I am a cylon. I deny and say that he must be the cylon. My action is to try brig him. It fails. Kris' action is to try brig me. It fails. Emily's action is to try brig me. It passes. The first 5 turns has the admiral's quarters used 3 times. Additionally, the first two crisis cards and cylon fleet cards. Cain blind jumps us very early.

Distrust is high at this point and eventually Baltar is targetted by the admiral's quarters. The check passes high enough for Cain to execute Baltar. Baltar reveals a cylon loyalty card and passes the other one to me.

I stay in the brig for a few turns , eventually managing to get out with some unexpected help from Dee. We fail a crisis check that stops any loyalty cards being looked at, as as resources slowly start to make their way down, the sleeper phase sees Baltar's extra loyalty card go to me. All the while, cylon Baltar was gathering super-crisis cards.

It was at this time that we got and passed Legandary Discovery with investigative committee.

Everything was in the red when a crisis card if passed would allow me to brig someone. The group was ambivilent about passing it, but Kris and Emily were pointing fingers at Eric, and Eric was pointing fingers at me and Emily. Despite Emily previously nuking a basestar, I chose to trust the only person I could, put in a lot to the skill check, passed it and sent Emily to the brig, resulting in me taking the admiralty.

Mike played his supercrisis to move the jump prep back 2 and this combined with another crisis card saw almost all cylon ships on the board. We eventually jumped early but lost population. The resultant jump saw me choose a two distance to bring us to 8 distance.

Another crisis saw a skill check made open through an investigative committee and someone openly sabotaged it-me! It wasn't enough though and with that passed, the humans were able to weather another few turns and another super crisis that damaged Galactica and put 2 centurions on Galactica to early jump away for the win.

It turns out that Mike thought that whatever he told the group of my loyalty card, I would show it to the group and immediately reveal whether or not he was telling the truth. It would have been devastating to the humans had he said that I was a human.

Upon reflection, I think that:
-this was one of the quickest games of BSG I have played
-we didn't explain the game the best we could have-had we been properly teaching it, Mike would have understood a lot of things better (the process of seeing loyalty cards, what the locations did, how to best play as a human or cylon etc.). I think we were too eager to get into it to do as good a job as we could have
-I should have openly sabotaged Legandary Discovery-passing that was too good for the humans
-I revealed a turn too late, missing the chance to do damage when almost all cylon pieces were on the board-I was too concerned with remaining hidden at the expense of successfully being the cylon (rookie mistake!)
-My last turn as an obvious but unrevealed cylon was to successfully scout away a jump prep crisis but unfortunately the next one had a jump prep. I should have revealed and hoped to get FTL damaged.
-It will now be EVEN HARDER for anyone to believe that I'm not a cylon, although I've only been a cylon one-third of the time (5/15).

While waiting to pick up a game, grabbed this quick and simple filler and roped Greg, Roger & Oliver in..we got 3 games in in around 30 mins tops, with Hong joining us for the third game of the series.

I think Oliver and Roger managed to win this...by the last game people were starting to hide their chips...my niece used to sit on hers while playing.. You can't beat that for 'fog of war'.

Nice way to warm up before getting stuck into something meatier and it's in the WABA Collection.

I was wanting a solid meat and potatoes game and while History of the World would have been my first choice there wouldn't have been enough time to have more than 3 players...Antike caught my eye instead, with a nice set of components and a blurb that read like Civ-Lite.

managed to rope Dean in, who had played previously, along with Roger, Greg and a new visitor Kim...took around 20 mins to read thru set up but then we were off. Powers were Rome, Germans, Carthage, Greeks and Phoneacians who all aim to gather resources and build Cities, Temples and armies. Cards are gained depending on various milestones and the aim is to gather 8 cards for the win.

We fumbled a couple of rules, being conflict, with the example at odds with the rule and only clarified by the FAQ! I misread the victory conditions which robbed Dean of his win and allowed Roger to swoop in for the win (whoops).

Mechanics are straight forward and would probably be a max of 2 hrs for 5 players. Would give this a go again.

Finished the day with 2 quick games of this vs Kim, who had not played before, but commented on similarities to poker...WABA should have some copies of this in it's collection as it's only drawback is being 2 player.

Warren, Rob and I taught this quintesstial, perfect Euro to Mags and her partner. Possibly due to people jumping on Rob, rather than jumping on me, who was in the lead, I won.

I also won by being not too badly affected by people's courts being emptied - my court was emptied, it stung but I had a lot of people coming in that round anyway.

My strategy in this game is to get my court topped up and then grab the 'get the people on the board cards' if I can. That way people draining cards aren't as bad.

I also managed to keep a death grip on the good mobile scoreboard for 2/3rds of the game.

A good game, always up for this one.

Warren taught this little gem to Rob and I, with Dean having his second game of it.

It's good, isn't it? I very much like the hand management of it. Think I came second by one coin.

Had 7 player game of this going as our warm up.

Christophe won, I believe, by quite a big margin. I think I came 2nd.

We can scan the scoresheet and send it to you if you like, Christophe.

*edited to spell Christophe's name right!

Tim and Andrew taught this to Gracie, Eric and me.

Not sure who won (Andrew?) but thought that this 're-make' of Union Pacific was a really good game.

I played this with Hadassa and Priya, all of us newbies. It was very thematic and a bit quirky - we all enjoyed making jokes about swimming in each others' poo! It was fun and had a had some strategy and tactics, but we all agreed it went a little longer than it should have.

Hadassa and I had been looking forward to learning this for a while, and were finally taught by experienced players Matt and Jess. Priya played too.

At first it was a bit bamboozling but it didn't take long for the clever mechanisms to click. Getting a good strategy was another matter entirely and Hadassa and I finished well behind: Matt won on 50-something, Jess wasn't far behind in the high 40s I think, Priya next, and Hadassa and I in the 20s.

I'm keen to give this another shot and can see why many people have said it replaced Caylus for them.

played this one with maggie and two members (sorry guys.. I forgot your names) while waiting for a few other gamers.

Nice and short game that ended in round two after rob? bombed out and me straight after after the other member finished his tracks super fast with us with still two tracks to complete.

Maggie held on to stay in the game, but we packed up before the last round since half of the players were out and the game we were going to play was ready to go.

A perfect time filler
