A fair old turn out on a cold day. The balloon chase scenario on the Wings of War mat saw two fun plays. The lack of the cafe is certainly being felt. I'm wondering if we should bring a kettle or urn or something.

A good turnout and I certainly had a great time. Thank you for the kindness of people who moved my pieces for me, as my back has had a sprain.

Rob and I set up a scenario on the big mat where a Balloon had gotten loose with the observer's camera still on it. With three planes on each side and a fourth in reserve, the mission was to bring down the balloon either on your side for the points, 4 points worth or in No Man's Land to deny the other side the points.

Played it through twice and it was a lot of fun. Unfortunately my side, the Central Powers got hammered into the ground but I certainly enjoyed it!

We had a nice game of this with ariaflame, Roger, Owen, rdmasters and a couple of others. I managed to bound just ahead of ariaflame to score the victory.

Apparently this is most like Apples to Apples but prettier and a little more complex.

Taught/revised this with Ernest, Mark and Simon.

Didn't teach all the tricks so I won.

Tim and Mark introduced Richard and I to this new cooperative board game. Playing as Captain Kirk, Bones, Spock and Uhura respectively, we set out to save the planet Nibia from the threat of civil war while foiling the Klingons covert attempts to disuade the planet from joining the Federation.

It was a resounding success as we "clocked" the game (Old 80's arcade parlance...if the game had arcade scoring it would have been maxed at 999,999 before crashing). Notable moments included Tim's (Kirk) uncanny ability to uncover the hidden missions, Richard's (BonesSpock) last minute challenge success against the clock and Uhura's brief respite from her usual place at the communications console as she took command of the Enterprise in battle ordering the weapons systems to repeatedly pound the attacking Klingon Warship into submission before it was vaporised from orbit.

A nice little game this one and not just for the Trekies among us

Richard lead first time player Kim and El Grande noobies Rowland and myself in this game. We played the shorter version only to see Richard charge ahead with a convincing lead.

Despite being left behind on the score board by the others, I believe I must be getting better at this game because I only forgot one of the two "most important" rules on one occasion.

Played with Renato, Joff, Steve and Greg.

Poor Renato, the rules explanation was a nightmare. Fortunately, the game played smoothly and after a few rounds started to click.

A mish mash of worker placement and set collection. Tied with Steve on victory conditions and pipped him on victory points.

Would like to play this one again.

Battle of Paraitecene

Supreme General Steve G (Antigonus)
Field Generals Mark, Nathan, Renato

vs

Supreme General Greg (Eumenes)
Field Generals Joff, Owen, Richard

Most of the action occurred on the flanks. At one stage, the Antigonids were 8 banners vs 1. A late thrust through the center saw the Eumenes at 13 banners to 11. But the Antigonids won 16 vs 14.

Fun social experience but probably too little action and too much downtime for the field generals.

Played with Nathan, Owen, Warren, Ernest.

Fun quick game with fiddly setup. Nicely rounded out the Ancients/medieval theme of the day.

Tim taught this to Gemma, Imogen and me.

We played half the game before visiting friends from Sydney called Gemma away.

Bonus - Gemma bought them back for the rest of the afternoon.

Ernest, Steve, .., and I gave this one a go. A four player learning game where none of us had read the rules before sitting down to play it. Luckily Ernest had a rules summary sheet from BGG, which condensed the rulebook down to one page with appendices for the card symbols. It is actually easier once you're playing than you'd believe from reading the rules.

There is a bit of negativity about this one on the Geek, but we ignorantly managed to avoid most of the noob mistakes which make Gloria Mundi a turn off for many players.

This one's in the WABA collection, and worth a try if you like an intelligent 'take-that' game with subtle strategy and Glory to Rome/ Race for the Galaxy iconography to boot.

After playing and loving this game at the last Mt Claremont meet, Hadassa and I couldn't resist playing 2 games of this with Raymond, who won both! (Particularly because in the 2nd game I fell into the trap of going for too many occupations at the expense of more substantive investments, resulting in not 1, but 2 begging cards :/). Hadassa and I have now bought this game so we can resume playing a variety of games at WABA ;D

I am a terrible game teacher, and that is a large part of why this game did not go down well with Eric ($81), Kim ($45) and Simon ($43), who all beat me ($31). Part of the reason (not that I take anything away from my terrible teaching) is that we played with 4, which leads to people owning one company each. This game is much better with 3 or 5. Please play again a) with 3 or 5 players, and b) with a better teacher!
