was down for the weekend with Will and my wife and daughter came along too. We went with the sole plan to make use of the games library to try out as many new games as we could.

Many thanks to Dick and the other organisers for an enjoyable day- and does anyone know what was in the Bag O' Geek...?

Not a new one to me, but I thought it deserved a second chance so I inflicted it on family and friends because we need to make a decision to play something quickly and get the ball rolling.

It wasn't much better the second time around but at least it played fast. the overall conclusion was that it has a horrible end game, the bobby movement is meaningless and it plays too much like Ticket to Ride (which, as a group, we can't stand).

Another of Hazel's games that she graciously let us play despite being in it's shrink. My wife wanted to play this and although Gordon and I were a little sceptical as it was published by the perpetrators of Munchkin, we gave it a go. What we found was that whilst it's not much of a game- more a shared experience, it's quite a pleasant one. I wouldn't buy it, but it was good fun.

Lunch time.

I borrowed this from a friendly chap embroiled in a game of Alien Frontiers. We got it out and I started reading the rules. This was my third explanation of the day and the room was getting quite loud and there seemed to be a lot of admin involved in this. I got my head around the concept of marking where the treasure could be and the game play involving the removal of blocks and moving your ATVs around the board section then got to the amulets and statues moving and my brain just gave up.

We packed this one away. I got some fresh air and painkillers.

My daughter chose this one because it looked good with the primary colours and theme. We took it out of the box and Gordon ran through the set up and rules. We laid out the various sections of the board and worked out what symbol referred to which part of it then we ran through what the ships did and which types of passengers would like what attraction and which attractions went where on you plot of land then.....ARRRRGGHHHHHGGHHH!!!!!BITS!! BITS EVERYWHERE! AAAAUUURRRGGG! NO! NO! NO MORE BITS!

We packed this one away too.

Meanwhile we cracked through Alien Frontiers to get a feel for it. We all like Kingsburg and there is some love for Troyes too, so this seemed to be worth a look.

Oh my word, there's a lot of downtime isn't there? It's very difficult to plan your turn and you get hit with a myriad of options once your dice fall. Kingsburg and Troyes both work by placing dice workers around the table in sequence. In this you put them all down at once and the analysis paralysis is palpable.

...and that was the end of the day, which might seem negative, but we crossed a number of potential purchases off the list and got a feel for a number of games. No stand out stuff, but the analysis of the games around the table as we played them and related them to other we like and dislike was really interesting. Gordon and I talked about how difficult it was to get a correctly weighted games library, and days like this really help to refine your picks.
