I love any type of game, whether it be card, board, video, or other. I am also the father of 3 1/2 year old boy-girl twins. We've all had a fun time discovering different games to play.

The main reason that I like to play games with my kids is to teach them good sportsmanship and good manners. Secondary reasons would be learning critical thinking and (to be honest) gaming companions. blush

I'm glad that both of my kids having been having a really good time playing games. I'll ride this wave as long as it lasts.

We started off by playing something very simple. I heard someone on here mention that his kids play a game with him where they put some number of beans in the middle of the table and take turns rolling a die and collecting beans for what number they roll.

That taught some important things: counting, taking turns, (and reading a die )

We moved on to Candy Land. I know that there still is zero strategy, but we're talking about two-year-olds here.

They really like it, and don't get frustrated when someone else wins.

The version that we have (and I remember growing up with) is called Chutes and Ladders.

I didn't like it very much at all. There seem to be about as many ways to go backwards as forwards. The game doesn't have a well-defined end. At least with Candy Land, there are only about 6 cards in the deck that could possibly move you backwards. Here, there are ways to get sent back all over the place.

There are better ways to teach my kids to count.

Now we're talking. This one is really cool because of the balancing effect of strategy vs. the dexterity element in the game (small fingers). We didn't start by playing the real game. We started by just flipping over the tiles and pulling the eggs of that color.

We've been playing the real game for a while, and they really enjoy it. They don't use any strategy, they just always flip the tile and pull. Even so, they can usually win with those small fingers.

After they had their colors and numbers down pretty well, I decided that this could work. I removed all the special cards like Skip, Reverse, and the wilds.

They like it quite a bit. I don't think they get the "mystery" of keeping your hand hidden, so we have been playing face-up.

In a way, it's similar to UNO in that you play or pass, and you have a hand. We play this one face-up, also.

I think this one's okay, but my daughter really likes it. My son likes it as well.

There are a few problems with this one. The rules are broken (it never tells you when to draw additional cards.) Also, sometimes you can get into a position where you can't play anything.

They also like to gang up on Dad. Nevertheless, if the kids like it, I like it.

This one's just a simple roll and move race, but it's kinda cool in that all the players move at different speeds (and different distances).

They like this one. It's a nice alternative to Candy Land, and about 1000 times better than Chutes and Ladders.

This one of my favorites that they play (along with Gulo Gulo). I think that's because this reminds me of the video game Chu Chu Rocket a little bit. It has a good theme (A cat chasing mice? Classic!)

There is also a good push-your-luck thing going on with the cat going around the board after the mice. Do you duck in and get easy cheese, or do you go for the Cheese Paradise?

This is a good no strategy, follow the directions game for them. I think it's important for them to be able to recognize the icons on the dice and decipher what they mean. They also like to gang up on Dad and take all my dice/chips.

I'll probably break this one out again, but I'll give them some time.

This is another roll and move, but it's kinda cool because the die alters as you play. There are still very few decisions.

I think the rules are a little broken in that it's all about rolling orange (turbo boosts). I'll have to alter things for the next time we play.

They liked this one. I don't know if my son "got it" when we played. He kept pulling out the orange sticks at the beginning of the game. I think once he dropped about half the marbles in one turn, he changed to remove other colors.

I wish this wasn't so much of a pain to set up.

Much to my surprise, they love this one. They understand how the money relates to property ownership. They know the denominations of the bills, and are getting pretty good at knowing what to give when they owe different amounts. We've been playing one game for about a week. It might finish soon, though, because houses and hotels are starting to show up on the board.
