A sequence of fortunate events led to myself and Rob being able to join the Southerners this month. It was a lot of fun, great people, and a great venue. I would have liked to stay longer, but our dinner engagement beckoned. Ausminstrel had a box o'games for us from a shared order we did, we didn't play any of them though. But we are now the proud owners of Powerboats, 11 Takes, Taj Mahal and others.

Thanks for the great day, I was fairly buzzing with good feeling for the rest of the evening.

Also Aidden is an awesome Wings of War pilot. He can fly in my team anytime.

We brought along the gear and set up the same scenario with the Great Balloon Hunt as we had at the Claremont meeting.

Three planes aside, with rdmasters and Hong and one of the chaps whose name I forget on one side, and myself and Aidden and the other chaps whose name I forget on my side with the Central Powers.

Aidden shot and burned rdmasters into the ground, and then Hong shot me down. Then my other wingman got shot down, leaving Aidden eventually to succumb to the other team but not without a fight.

Great game! Thanks folks!

Ausminstrel expressed a desire to learn this one so we'd brought it along. We had an exciting 5 player game with rdmasters doing most of the teaching very nicely too. Everyone seemed to have a clear idea of what was going on.

Turned out a close game, with me keeping a little bit ahead at the end. Managed to connect 3 sets of tourist attractions too, first time I've managed that - lucky to get two usually!

Ha ha, not really, just a pun on 'disc'. We took one of the mini targets to promote this event, which Rob is Tournament Director for. Come along! It'll be fun!

5 illegal street racers took to the urban circuit in this not too complex, but fun, racing game. Rowland, Elaine and myself along with two first timers to WABA Steve and Nick, tested our respective driving skills (i.e. testing our luck with well/poorly chosen gear dice).

After running the gauntlet of would be urban snipers (Although Elaine's safe, gunshot free passage through this section may be cause for one to wonder if there may in fact be some mob or gang affiliation going on there), debris laden road and some tricky corners, Rowland came home with a convincing lead. I was satisfied to not place last again...although that was only on account of Steve spinning out in front of the police station.

Rowland taught this one to Elaine, Alistair (sp?) and I. A very enjoyable game of regional exploration by sea, settlement establishment, worker placement and settlement unsettling (A clinical condition brought about by the pounding of cannon balls in ones direction).

A closely fought game between Elaine (2nd) and Rowland (1st) in the end with Alistair and I in the rear. I look forward to revisiting this game again.

Elaine, Kim, Rowland, Warren and I played this map fresh out of its shrink wrap. This was my third playing of Railways of The World this week, but the first time I have played this map. My appetite for this game is not easily satiated it seems.

A great map to play with alot of nearby delivery options and slowly spreading rail links all competing for what soon becomes limited space. Strategies and grand plans are foiled and reformulated as players begin to encroach on one anothers niches of England and Wales (Well apart from Rowland who had free reign in the North-West).

The final win went to Warren, but the rest of the group were not too far behind. Behind Warrens score, we were all within relatively close proximity to each other on the score board, despite a relatively slow start to Kim's income climb and Elaine's cautious approach to issuing bonds. She usurped my claim to my Baron card to have the least bonds by games end....only 2 bonds!?! aaargh, enough of the frugality already! .

Yes! Finally got to play this rather neat game of dice rolling and placement which abstractly represents resource gathering, spaceship building, alien artifact acquisitioning and planet colonisation. Rowland and Warren played against the newcomers of Elaine and myself.

Another win for Warren in this one. I enjoyed the game as I knew I would after all the positive feedback I have heard about it. I am sure the hard and fast "anti-dice" eurogamers rue this one

Finally, I can now hold my head up high and proclaim loudly "Behold...I am a boardgamer".

Despite a wait of nearly 3 years, I was finally afforded the opportunity to try this classic "staple" of boardgaming.

Rowland, Warren and Elaine guided me (like the newbie gamer I always was until I had actually played this) to this "gateway" game with a well deserved reputation. I enjoyed it alot and will endevour to add a copy to my collection to make ammends for my misguided ways for ignoring this game for so long.

p.s. It's not that I "ignored" the game all this time...it's just that when you have only really entered this hobby with sincerety in very recent years, the "huge" number of great games that have followed it all beg just as much attention to be played. Where does one begin? So little time...so many games...

Joff, Hung and I burned through a few games of Dominion with everything. There were quite a few attack cards but the games went smoothly enough and we gave a few of the Cornucopia cards a workout.

Thank you to David for teaching this game. Joff, David, Simon and I sat down for a three stage bicycle race. The mechanics of the game suit the subject well and short term alliances were made in order to get ahead or catch up. Riders bonked from running short of energy and sprinters struggled mightily to get over the mountains.
One of Simons riders took the yellow quickly in the first stage and enjoyed a good points lead going into the second. One of my riders managed to break away early in the second and soloed to the finish line and took yellow. In the final stage Joff made good ground with a strong train and my leader was left on the line with mechanical trouble. Fortunately I had spent enough time in yellow to ensure a narrow points win over Joff.
A little random at times, but that luck element matches the subject matter well and made for an exciting game.

Tim kindly taught this game to Joff, Hung, Simon, David and I (though it was not my first game).
This is an excellent light game, enjoyed by all. Certainly the luck of the draw pays an important role and especially so in this game. The five visible cards were eschewed in favour of a random top of the deck pick throughout most of the game making keeping track of anyones holdings impossible. On the other hand it made plane placement very cagey with some interesting negative plane plays near the end.
I won, mostly through experience and a lucky first draw, but I think everyone enjoyed the game and would play again.

I taught this game to Joff, Simon, Aiden and David. They quickly picked up the rules and spirit of the game and were soon wandering around the table sizing up the balance of the structure and whether their pillars could be rescued. As is often the case with the first play the whole thing came down relatively early, but Aiden had placed well on the green level and was the winner.

Knocked out a quick two lap game whilst waiting for the other tables to finish. The racers were Aiden, Simon, joff, David and myself. I own the larger game and have played a fair bit so managed to get over the line first, but behind me there were plenty of excitng duels and mega flicks and the rest of the field came in quite close together.
