The following are the events that are currently scheduled for the
2011 Fall Gaming Hoopla

The next Gaming Hoopla is September 23rd to September 25th, and will be held at The Johnstown Community Center, 9937 East County Road A, Janesville, WI 53546. You can find a map and directions from Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, and Rockford on our web site: www.gaminghoopla.com.

As always, all proceeds from the Gaming Hoopla are donated to the American Cancer Society through the Knutson Family and Tastefully Simpletuns Relay for Life Teams.

Except for the Special Events, all events are listed in chronological order by day and event start time. Please be sure to check out all pages if you are using this as a reference to plan your Hoopla schedule.

Each entry has a description, day, time, number of players, experience level desired, and name of the event judge. The experience levels are set by the judges and will be one of three choices:

Will Teach - This is a "learn to play" session...the game will be taught.

Some Experience - Some experience with that game or genre of game is helpful. Judges will still teach, but reading rules prior to the event is encouraged.

Experience Necessary - Player should be familiar with the game and know most if not all of the rules.

Don't see an event you're interested in? Then come and run your own games using one of the over 800 games in the GenCon Games Library and our ample open gaming tables!

For more information and periodic updates about the Hoopla, check out www.gaminghoopla.com. You can also join our BGG conversation in the Conventions forum here: 2011 Fall Gaming Hoopla!

If you have any questions, please comment here, or email me at gaminghoopla@gmail.com.

Luminaria Ceremony!

The Luminaria Ceremony is a tribute to those who had or have cancer, those who lost their lives, and those fighting the disease. The ceremony will take place at 8:00 pm on Saturday night. ALL events will be stopped at this time for a short break, and we will take some time to remember that ultimately the Gaming Hoopla is a fund-raiser to raise money to fight this disease.

Join us in celebrating the lives of those who have lost their battles with cancer, and in supporting those who are currently fighting it. Your generosity can make a difference!

Each welcome packet will include a luminary bag with instructions, and others will be available for attendees to decorate in memory or support of their loved ones. Donations are accepted, but not required.

Wits and Wagers Tournament!

The Wits & Wagers Game Show is back for another Hoopla! A large-scale board, oversized bidding chips, and a somewhat silly host with a sound system and game show music at his disposal... what more could you ask for? Lots of fun, and fabulous prizes for the winning team! (Exact nature of prizes TBD) Two modifications to the standard W&W rules: instead of only playing seven questions, one game will continue for the entire two hours, with the team with the highest score at the end of the time slot wins; also, there will be betting limits imposed during the second hour of the game.

You play an ant colony. Prey and leaves abound nearby - if only those other ants would not take what is rightfully yours. Players attempt to have their ants bring back prey and leaves to their anthill. Only the best ant colony will survive and the winner proclaimed The Ant Queen. Game play is straightforward yet rich in challenging decisions. Do you concentrate on building your ant-hill only to discover that others have got to the food before you? Or do you go and grab the food only to find yourself out powered towards the end of the game?

In Le Havre, a player’s turn consists of two parts: First, distribute newly supplied goods onto the offer spaces; then take an action. As an action, players may choose either to take all goods of one type from an offer space or to use one of the available buildings. Building actions allow players to upgrade goods, sell them or use them to build their own buildings and ships. Buildings are both an investment opportunity and a revenue stream, as players must pay an entry fee to use buildings that they do not own. Ships, on the other hand, are primarily used to provide the food that is needed to feed the workers.

Airlines Europe is a stock game, with players earning points for the stock they hold in particular airline companies when one of the randomly determined scorings takes place. On a player's turn, that player either expands an airline and claims a stock, plays stock onto the board and receives dividend, invests in a special airline called Air ABACUS or gets a certain amount of money from the bank. A player scores only for stock in play, but the value of an airline is determined by the value of the route licenses that airline owns.

In Chrononauts, each player is a time traveler, with a unique identity and a secret mission. During the game, players travel through history, doing those things people have always dreamed of using a time machine to do: visiting the great moments of the past, peeking into the future, collecting priceless artifacts and works of art, coming to grips with the paradoxes of time travel, and of course, changing the course of history itself. But be careful! In order to win, the final timeline of history must match the alternate reality you originally came from.

With more than 5 players, two games will be run simultaneously! A long time ago in Europe, ages were pretty dark. The distribution of wealth back then left a lot to be desired. Greedy people banded together to take things from other people so that the rich could get richer and the poor could have even less. Twas ever thus. Step into the middle of the normal state of human affairs as a Baron or Baroness somewhere almost in Europe a long time ago. Thanks to your birth you have a lot of little people working to make you richer, and you, in turn, are doing your best to make your king even more prosperous. If you do things right, you might someday be king. Each player starts with a Fiefdom Management card, divided into 64 squares (49 of which can have tiles played on them. Into four of these squares you deploy your Keep, in which you will put your fortification of some sort, and your soldiers. Elsewhere in your land you deploy assorted resource gatherers and buildings in an effort to grow, prosper, and score victory points. Along the way there may be wars, invasions, tournaments, taxes, and a lot of other nonsense.

Go down in the dungeon. Kill everything you meet. Backstab your friends and steal their stuff. Grab the treasure and run. Admit it - you love it. Munchkin is a card game about dungeon adventure . . . with none of that role-playing stuff. You and your friends compete to kill monsters and grab magic items.

Players are master builders trying to profit from vanity-driven families. You build towers floor by floor, ready to take credit for making them look good. From Mayfair’s description of the game: “You must shrewdly accept the uilding orders of the patrician families to position yourself in the right place at the right time. Play your cards right, and your name will be famous among the rich and powerful!”

Reef Encounter is about life on a coral reef! Using polyp tiles, players grow different types of corals, which they can protect from being attacked by other corals through judicious placing of their four shrimp counters. To be successful players must consume polyps from neighboring corals in order to acquire the 'consumed' polyp tiles that are the key to the game. The consumed polyp tiles have a myriad of uses. Most importantly they can be used to flip over or lock the coral tiles, which determine the respective values of the different types of coral at the end of the game.

History of the World works under the assumptions that all empires eventually fade and that the only things differentiating great empires from lesser ones is how much territory they conquer and how long it takes for their civilizations to disappear. To that end, the game is played in epochs, with every player handling a new empire during each; yes, some empires will be stronger than others, but a few clever mechanisms largely balance that out. At the end of each epoch, players score points for all their forces (from the current and previous empires) remaining on the board.
