The following are the events that are currently scheduled for the
2011 Fall Gaming Hoopla

The next Gaming Hoopla is September 23rd to September 25th, and will be held at The Johnstown Community Center, 9937 East County Road A, Janesville, WI 53546. You can find a map and directions from Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, and Rockford on our web site: www.gaminghoopla.com.

As always, all proceeds from the Gaming Hoopla are donated to the American Cancer Society through the Knutson Family and Tastefully Simpletuns Relay for Life Teams.

Except for the Special Events, all events are listed in chronological order by day and event start time. Please be sure to check out all pages if you are using this as a reference to plan your Hoopla schedule.

Each entry has a description, day, time, number of players, experience level desired, and name of the event judge. The experience levels are set by the judges and will be one of three choices:

Will Teach - This is a "learn to play" session...the game will be taught.

Some Experience - Some experience with that game or genre of game is helpful. Judges will still teach, but reading rules prior to the event is encouraged.

Experience Necessary - Player should be familiar with the game and know most if not all of the rules.

Don't see an event you're interested in? Then come and run your own games using one of the over 800 games in the GenCon Games Library and our ample open gaming tables!

For more information and periodic updates about the Hoopla, check out www.gaminghoopla.com. You can also join our BGG conversation in the Conventions forum here: 2011 Fall Gaming Hoopla!

If you have any questions, please comment here, or email me at gaminghoopla@gmail.com.

Welcome to the scoutship Warden. You have been sent to scout two huge domes floating out of the solar system. You are the best of space troopers and this looks like it could be another bug hunt. Huu Raa! You just have to bring 3d6 dice and a pencil and paper. Beginners very welcome.

Running Out of Air

You're on a lifeboat. The ship you were on was shot up by pirates. They seemed to come out of nowhere; was it an inside job? Worse, you've just discovered you are venting atmosphere, there's no sign of rescue, and the nearest planet is across the star system. Can you survive? (Classic Traveller rules)

Pergamon is a tactical collecting game with a theme based on excavating archaeological discoveries and managing their exhibitions. The players attempt to gain research grants to cover the costs of their excavations. Whoever is modest and less demanding can travel to the excavating areas before his or her competitors, and the rule is first come, first dig. Only fragments will remain for the later expeditions. Recovered treasures are placed in valuable exhibitions, for which the discoverer receives glory and recognition.

Mystery of the Abbey is a whodunit game with a twist. A monk has been murdered in a medieval French Abbey. Players maneuver their way through the Abbey examining clues and questioning each other to find out who is the culprit. A masterful game of deduction! The players are plantation owners in Puerto Rico in the days when ships had sails. Growing up to five different kind of crops—corn, indigo, sugar, tobacco, and coffee—they must try to run their business more efficiently than their close competitors: growing crops and storing them efficiently, developing San Juan with useful buildings, deploying their colonists to best effect, selling crops at the right time, and, most importantly, shipping their goods back to Europe for maximum benefit. The game system lets players choose the order of the phases in each turn by allowing each player to choose a role from those remaining when it is their turn. No role can be selected twice in the same round. The player who selects the best roles to advance their position during the game will win.

A Voice in the Wilderness

Traveling with a merchant caravan in a faraway mountain kingdom, you hear rumors of a new discovery in a high mountain fastness, of strange items of the Ancients, gold coins with the faces of long-dead kings, and voices in the darkness. But there are also legends of terrible guardians who can slay with a single strike; remember the old saying: "Sweet is the harbor - but Death is the ferryman." (Empire of the Petal Throne rules)

With more than 5 players, two games will be run simultaneously! 90,000 B.C. -- A great ice age is fast approaching. Another titanic struggle for global supremacy has unwittingly commenced between the varying animal species. Dominant Species is a game that abstractly recreates a tiny portion of ancient history: the ponderous encroachment of an ice age and what that entails for the living creatures trying to adapt to the slowly-changing earth. Each player will assume the role of one of six major animal classes -- mammal, reptile, bird, amphibian, arachnid or insect. Each begins the game more or less in a state of natural balance in relation to one another. But that won’t last: It is indeed survival of the fittest." Through wily action pawn placement, players will strive to become dominant on as many different terrain tiles as possible in order to claim powerful card effects. Players will also want to propagate their individual species in order to earn victory points for their particular animal. Players will be aided in these endeavors via speciation, migration and adaptation actions, among others. All of this eventually leads to the end game -- the final ascent of the ice age -- where the player having accumulated the most victory points will have his animal crowned the Dominant Species. But somebody better become dominant quickly, because it’s getting mighty cold....

In this cousin of Saint Petersburg, each player represents a monarch dragon clan, and attempts to assert herself as the Dragon Monarch by game end, by securing the most Royals (victory points). In order to facilitate this process, players will use their Geld (money) to hire Dragon Lairds (aristocrats) and buy Resources (buildings) and Commoners (peasants). You can use precious Royals (your victory points) to acquire Dragon Havocs, which empower you to do anything from getting extra cash, to stealing things from your opponents. The Havocs tend to be one-shot little guys, however, and are always discarded to the bottom of the discard deck, as far out of reach as possible from those cards that pilfer the discard pile. At the end of each round, you accumulate the Geld and Royals that your acquisitions generate for your clan. At the end of the game, you additionally receive any Finale Royals on cards as end-game victory points.

ALSO: Dragon Lairds from Outer Space! Try out this not-yet-published variant of Dragon Lairds!

Red Shirt Smash!

In space, nobody can hear you scream... This fast-paced, d12-based game of space fighter combat is a home-brew spinoff of Silent Death - at about one-tenth the difficulty! (And Silent Death is already an easy game!) I played this game at Gen Con and it is an absolute BLAST! (Heh. Blast) This is truly a fun and fast twelve-player free-for-all! Prizes will be provided by Richard Dufalt of the Ottawa Red Shirts - the designer of the game!

Up to twelve of the galaxy’s best pilots will try to outmaneuver and out-gun their opponents. You start with a Tier One ship and enter the map through a random warp gate. You must then inflict two critical hits on any opponent(s) and leave through a random warp gate to advance! Then do the same with a Tier Two ship and four critical hits. Then be the first player to pilot a Tier Three ship to eight critical hits and exit the board to be declared the winner! Even if you are eliminated during a turn, you start right back up on the next turn with a new ship!

Hacienda has players competing for space on the South American pampas, aiming to bring their livestock to the most markets. You get three actions a turn to buy cards which then let you lay tiles to control land and herds, or you may buy extras, such as waterholes or the haciendas of the title to get bonus points.

Players play as well-off Parisians in the 15th century who wish to improve the importance and appearance of the city quarter around the famous Notre Dame cathedral. The primary game concept is original but simple card play players use to permanently improve their influence in the quarter. However, turn after turn, round after round, players must make choices that can have major implications. If one does one thing, then the other can't be done. Concentrating on one aspect means automatically ignoring another, which, above all others, is particularly dangerous in the case of the gradually approaching plague... After 9 exciting rounds and about 75 action-filled minutes, Notre Dame is over. The 'maitre' who has made the most of his cards and has garnered the most prestige points is the winner.

Come play Wishing Tree Games' first scheduled for release game! The lord’s birthday has arrived, and several land owners have gathered to host a lavish party that they have planned in his honor. The land ownershave spared no expense planning the party, in an attempt to impress the lord and gain favor with his seven daughters. Only one more bit of business needs to be settled…each land owner has bet a parcel of land that they can curry the most favor from the seven sisters over the course of the party. Do so by influencing the Seven Sisters: Wrath, Greed, Gluttony, Lust, Sloth, Pride, and Envy.

In this light, beer & pretzels type of game, players are transformed into wizards attempting to collect treasures from a twisted little maze. At the heart of the game is a deck of cards that the players use to cast spells, power-up spells, and augment movement. Each turn, players can move up to three spaces (or more with the use of number cards). However, the goal is to penetrate the other players' sections of the maze, pick up one of their treasures, and bring it back to your home base. The first player to capture two such treasures or kill all the other wizards is the winner.
