The following are the events that are currently scheduled for the
2011 Fall Gaming Hoopla

The next Gaming Hoopla is September 23rd to September 25th, and will be held at The Johnstown Community Center, 9937 East County Road A, Janesville, WI 53546. You can find a map and directions from Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, and Rockford on our web site: www.gaminghoopla.com.

As always, all proceeds from the Gaming Hoopla are donated to the American Cancer Society through the Knutson Family and Tastefully Simpletuns Relay for Life Teams.

Except for the Special Events, all events are listed in chronological order by day and event start time. Please be sure to check out all pages if you are using this as a reference to plan your Hoopla schedule.

Each entry has a description, day, time, number of players, experience level desired, and name of the event judge. The experience levels are set by the judges and will be one of three choices:

Will Teach - This is a "learn to play" session...the game will be taught.

Some Experience - Some experience with that game or genre of game is helpful. Judges will still teach, but reading rules prior to the event is encouraged.

Experience Necessary - Player should be familiar with the game and know most if not all of the rules.

Don't see an event you're interested in? Then come and run your own games using one of the over 800 games in the GenCon Games Library and our ample open gaming tables!

For more information and periodic updates about the Hoopla, check out www.gaminghoopla.com. You can also join our BGG conversation in the Conventions forum here: 2011 Fall Gaming Hoopla!

If you have any questions, please comment here, or email me at gaminghoopla@gmail.com.

Arkham Horror is a cooperative board game themed around H.P Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. Players are investigators in the city of Arkham, trying to prevent one of the Ancient Ones from entering our world. During the game, players will upgrade their characters by acquiring skills, allies, items, weapons, and spells. Players must clear the city streets by fighting earthly and otherworldly horrors, but their main goal is to close dimensional portals opening up throughout Arkham. If too many portals open, the Ancient One awakens and the players have one last chance to save the world: defeat the Ancient One in combat!

Players seek to build a collection of districts worth from one to eight points. Once someone has built eight districts, the game is over after that round ends, and the player with the highest total value wins. However, to facilitate the process (and make the game interesting), players sequentially choose a character from a rapidly dwindling pool of eight each turn. The characters give players special abilities for the turn. We will be using some characters from the Dark City expansion.

Car Wars 2061 Off-Road Challenge

Car Wars is a game set 50 years in the future, where the right of way on the roads goes to the biggest guns! Now, imagine the excitement of tearing around an off-road arena in a specialized car - gunning for moving targets or trying to circle valuable flags and get back to the starting circle, all in the name of… victory points for bragging rights! But, wait - what is this? There are SEVEN other freaks on the same course - all trying to do the same thing! Surely, you are a better driver than they are. Perhaps you should try to gun them down to halt their efforts!

Make sure to get in on the excitement of this C2 Autoworks original event, dredged up from the depths of 1992! (Yes, you may play even if you weren’t born then!). We play at micro-machines scale and all materials will be provided.

The Scepter of Zavandor is about magic and power. Players represent young magicians who have gained possession of old magic knowledge, and with it they attempt to achieve the powerful position of archmage, symbolized by the Scepter of Zavandor. To increase their power and influence, the young magicians enchant jewels and seek out knowledge. An auction mechanism also allows them to acquire artifacts and sentinels. Victory points are earned through active gems, artifacts, sentinels, and knowledge.

In Alhambra, players are acquiring buildings to be placed within their Alhambra complex. On a player's turn, a player may take money from the open money market, purchase a building from the building market, or engage in construction and re-construction projects with buildings that have been placed in the player's reserve. The game rewards efficiency, as when a player purchases a building from the market for the exact amount of money, the player may take another turn. Players with the most buildings in each of the seven building types score in each of the scoring phases, and points are awarded for players' longest external "wall" section within their complex. The game ends when the building market can no longer be replenished from the building tile supply, and there is a final scoring, whereupon the player with the highest score wins.

In Kingsburg, players are Lords sent from the King to administer frontier territories. The game takes place over five years, a total of 20 turns. In every year, there are 3 production seasons for collecting resources, building structures, and training troops. Every fourth turn is the winter, in which all the players must fight an invading army. Each player must face the invaders, so this is not a cooperative game. The resources to build structures and train troops are collected by influencing the advisers in the King's Council. Players place their influence dice on members of the Council. The player with the lowest influence dice sum will be the first one to choose where to spend his/her influence; this acts as a way of balancing poor dice rolling. Even with a very unlucky roll, a clever player can still come out from the Council with a good number of resources and/or soldiers Each adviser on the King's Council will award different resources or allocate soldiers, victory points, and other advantages to the player who was able to influence him/her for the current turn. At the end of five years, the player who best developed his assigned territory and most pleased the King through the Council is the winner.

This is a classic Tom Wham game of warring kingdoms in a fantasy world and the legions of things that inhabit them. The board is made from hex tiles, which allows for a different board layout every time. Utilizing an interesting flipped counter element, players attempt to out-bluff one another regarding the types of things they have in their armies.

A clever tile-laying game. The southern French city of Carcassonne is famous for its unique Roman and Medieval fortifications. The players develop the area around Carcassonne and deploy their followers on the roads, in the cities, in the cloisters and in the fields. The skill of the players to best develop the area will determine who is victorious. We will use a few small expansions along with the base game.

Dragon Rampage is a strategic dice game for 3 to 5 players. Each player takes the role of one of the adventurers (all with different abilities) and the goal is to score the most points at the end of the game by fighting against or running from (or some combination of the two) the dragon you just woke up, and tallying up the treasure and gold you obtain in the dungeon. Players roll seven specially designed dice and choose whether to focus on grabbing treasure (from the dragon or from another player), fighting the dragon, protecting themselves (and their treasure), or running for the exit.

With more than 5 players, two games will be run simultaneously! A long time ago in Europe, ages were pretty dark. The distribution of wealth back then left a lot to be desired. Greedy people banded together to take things from other people so that the rich could get richer and the poor could have even less. Twas ever thus. Step into the middle of the normal state of human affairs as a Baron or Baroness somewhere almost in Europe a long time ago. Thanks to your birth you have a lot of little people working to make you richer, and you, in turn, are doing your best to make your king even more prosperous. If you do things right, you might someday be king. Each player starts with a Fiefdom Management card, divided into 64 squares (49 of which can have tiles played on them. Into four of these squares you deploy your Keep, in which you will put your fortification of some sort, and your soldiers. Elsewhere in your land you deploy assorted resource gatherers and buildings in an effort to grow, prosper, and score victory points. Along the way there may be wars, invasions, tournaments, taxes, and a lot of other nonsense.

This new game by Carl Chudyk is a journey through innovations from the stone age through modern times. Each player builds a civilization based on various technologies, ideas, and cultural advancements, all represented by cards. Each of these cards has a unique power which will allow further advancement, point scoring, or even attacking other civilizations. Be careful though, as other civilizations may be able to benefit from your ideas as well! To win, you must score achievements, which you can attain by amassing points or by meeting certain criteria with the innovations you have built. Plan your civilization well, and outmaneuver your opponents, and with some luck you will achieve victory!
