This is the geeklist about the Pasteboard and Plastic XVI all-day gaming event held on Saturday 29 October 2011 at the Scout Hut in Saltdean (near Brighton in England).

This is a chance to record games played, pictures and any other stuff. Please feel free to add to it. If no-one wants to add to it, then I'll probably take the list down - no point clogging the information super-highway up with useless information.

As ever, thanks for organising the event goes to Dick Ruck. Profits from entry fees and raffle go to support the 42nd Brighton (Saltdean) Scouts. There is a Pasteboard and Plastic Metalist

I will start with a game I didn't get to play, but did buy from the esteemed Boardgamesclub. Components look good - I hope to get this played in the next few days.

This is a game I wasn't planning on playing (having never heard of it), but suprised myself by making it my final game of the day.

The game involves some simultaneous action selection, resource management and area control - all mechanisms I am comfortable with. It also involved trying to judge the mood and activity of a hornet (or possibly bee) just from its picture.

I struggled with this mechanic and now consider bee-interpreting to be my least favourite game mechanic (along with hiding trackable information).

And I lost

I spent some time gazing in wonder at all the new and second-hand games for sale before someone snapped me out of my trance and dragged me off to play this. Although I spent much of the game whinging that the reflected light from the window made the business end of the board (with the available cards) completely invisible to me, I really enjoyed this. It certainly has the Power Grid flavour but the theme and nice wooden pieces made it different enough for me that I've added it to my own wish-list. In the end no-one even bothered to check what my final move would have been as I had already been written off as having no chance to compete with Jim, Dick, Helen and two of the younger gamers whose names my poor old brain has failed to retain despite one of them being the eventual winner. An enjoyable start to the day for me anyway.

I also discovered that Damon had kindly brought a couple of Power Grid promo cards back from Essen for me, with which I was well chuffed.

Before lunch (and the raffle) Damon produced one of his recent purchases and we squeezed in one quick game of it...which I lost very convincingly. It is at the opposite end of the game scale from the heavily thematic narrative games I lust after but has such nice shiny metal bits that I loved it. It's not the sort of game I am good at(who said "What is?")but I'd be happy to play a few more games and try to improve.

I was wandering in and out get myself a cup of tea and making inroads into my (outstanding if I do say so myself) sandwiches while the raffle was taking place. It had been some time since I had won anything in one of these so I wasn't expecting anything and it took a while to sink in that Dick was calling one of my numbers. Yay! As usual the raffle was a well-supported feature of P&P but a fair bit had gone before I got to the table. Nevertheless I was well pleased to have won and chose Fire Team which looks interesting and is in excellent condition. Many thanks to the donor!

After lunch I played my second and final board game of the day.

One of the pleasures of Pasteboard and Plastic is getting a chance to play with members of the wider local games community as well as my usual group, in this case Dave, Al and Mike. Having not had much sleep, and it being "pudding hour" anyway, my mind wasn't at its most receptive to rules, however, there was no way I wasn't going to play a game with so many coloured dice. It looked great and proved to be a lot of fun.

It also gave me ample opportunity to take pleasure in my second favourite hobby - a good whinge. Let me just say I was robbed. I was doing very nicely thank you when in the final stages I was completely stabbed in the back by my fellow gamers who gleefully stole my lovely casinos out from under me one by one just before the final rounds of scoring. Even Mike who had been quietly sitting at the back of the score track (albeit on huge piles of cash) overtook me, leaving me dead last. Great fun though and another game now on my wish-list.

My day began to wind down with the extraordinary bag of wooden toys that is Bausack. Nice to get a chance to play with Damon and Heidi again as I wanted to hear about their trip to Germany and the loot that they'd grabbed. This one I think was actually purchased on the day though and a bargain it was, as far as I was concerned. Despite my shaky old mitts not normally being well suited to dexterity games I think this was my one win of the day (Damon probably let me win). I was very taken with this strange game.

Heidi joined Damon and me for the last game of my day at Saltdean. This was familiar to all of us and one we enjoy. I got off to a bad start but finished level with Damon while Heidi won convincingly as the only one on positive points.

I went home with three new (well, second-hand) games, and a number of additions to the wish-list, having had a great time again. Thanks to all the people I played, and who brought games to sell or raffle. Thanks also to Board Game Club for putting up a mouthwatering array of new games to buy (I just couldn't decide...) and thanks to Dick as always for organising this popular event. Roll on Pasteboard and Plastic XVII

This was the other suprise game of the day, which I played with Paco and Dale; and they were kind enough to let me win (or maybe the old reflexes aren't completely gone yet).

It's more of an activity than a game - I'll be looking out for this one as an ideal Christmas party game.

I played two games of this dice rolling luck-fest, and I hear more games were played later in the evening.

It's truely one of 2011's go-to filler games of choice.

Only the second time I have played this and although I find it a reasonable enough game, I think that it favours those who know the cards and can hunt for certain powerful combinations.

A good win by Mig though - I came a decisive last!

Played thsi as a 2p with Ann while we waited for other games to finish. I managed to reverse the trouncing she gave me when we trid it at Essen

Have played this a few times now and this could be what I had hoped that Habitat would be. A short game about evolution (to contrast Dominant Species)

Quite a vicious games of adapting your animal by adding "traits" with the possibility of eating your opponents. I like it

One of my favourites from Essen this year.

A game about living a relaxed life on a tropical island, fishing, diving for treasure, interacting with tourists, exporting goods and drawing in the sand.

What makes the game interesting is that following a worker placement round actions can only be taken for actions where you have a majority of workers, so if you aren’t where the fish are and you don't have a majority for the sailing action you may have to fish where you are, where there are no fish! Makes for quite a tense game as if you chose to do a sand drawing before you go sailing you may block another player from being able to sail to where all the fish are before they go fishing.

Another new one from Essen. I enjoyed this at Essen with 3 players, but found it a bit more chaotic with 4.

Each player builds their quarter of the city. The game is split into 8 rounds, each round you produce stuff from your shops and workhouses which you can then use trade and build. Each player produces a unique resource and building becomes cheaper the more different resources you use so trading is essential
