Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to help me upgrade the game selection for the "morning math" program at my daughter's elementary school (PreK-5th grade).

One day a week, kids who come to school a half an hour early get to play math games together in the library before classes begin. Current selection of games includes 3-D Tic Tac Toe, Othello, Mastermind, Connect 4, Battleship, Set, Tantrix, as well as marble runs and MC Escher puzzles.

The ideal game for this setting plays in 15 minutes (30 minutes max), accomodates anywhere from 1-5 players (doesn't have to cover the whole range -- just be within it), is quick/easy to teach, and can be played happily by kids of different ages and/or with different levels of gaming skill or experience. As you can see from the existing list, math is pretty broadly defined -- as long as there's some numeric, strategic, analytic, or spatial component, a game qualifies. Budget isn't a big issue.

I'll lead off with the ones I consider must-have (but tell me if/why you think I'm wrong) and then add my more questionable choices with a description of qualms. I'd greatly appreciate it if people will add their own recommendations, as well as feedback on my suggestions.

Thanks in advance for helping me make our world just a little bit geekier!

Probably on the challenging side (i.e. not for everyone), but my 7.5 year old plays it well, so I don't think it's out of reach, especially with other kid-opponents.

Loco!

We've brought our copy in from home and drawn crowds as we played. The 1st graders begged me to take it to class and then begged their teachers to let them play it during free time. Took two days to get enough free time, but they waited!

The game that occasioned this list. Brought it in the morning and the head of the math department was intrigued. Asked where I find all this stuff and said it's time to refresh their game selection.

Einfach Genial (guess I should call it Ingenious now, but I'm still resisting)

This is another one where I'm worried about the 30 minute time limit. On the other hand, it's nice/useful to have some games that can be played solitaire (because kids trickle in, don't always know the other kids who are already there, and/or find themselves odd-one-out). And I think that the maximin scoring is an interesting concept to introduce. Thoughts?

Strikes me as a perfect math game. But it'll take more than 30 minutes if they play the full 3 rounds. Does it compromise the game/strategy too much to stop at 2 rounds?

We just opened this one (after having it in shrink for a few years) and my kids liked it. It's essentially Uno but if someone plays a launch card, the players count backward from 10 to 1, then Blastoff. Then there is a command that they have to follow in the future, like saying "Oh yeah" whenever you play an orange card. Except for the backward counting, it's pretty light on the math except for learning numbers. Check out Gamewright's offerings in general, though. For example, Frog Juice is a good way to practice addition and an interesting little game as a bonus.

Probably requires too much adult supervision/assistance and can only be played in an abbreviated form in this timeframe, but it did go over well with kindergartners under those circumstances last year. And I'd love to expose the kids to a game that this different from what they're used to.

Are their better Pyramid games for this context?

Very simple, easy to learn 2-player math game with cards using simple multiplication. You "buy" cards of the same color numbered 2-6 from the table, and when you have 2 of the same color, you multiply them together to determine how much money you earn!

Quick, light, simple and mathematic... My 9 year old niece and 12 year old nephew both play regularly and enjoy it.

I know the definition of math can be a bit fuzzy, but Cartagena is a great quick game for 2-5 players... Play cards to hop to the first available space on the board based on the picture on your card...

The "math" comes in on evaluating the value of the cards (If I play a Hat, I get to skip 3 occupied Hats and move really far, but I'll only move up 2 spaces if I play the Bottle). Also, you can only ever draw more cards by moving backward, and get 1 or 2 cards depending on how many people are in the space you retreat to.

Potential Warning: The game has a pirate theme, and depending on how sensitive (or crazy) other adults might be, they may be (for some unknown reason) upset by the different "suits" in the game -- skull, dagger, pistol, hat, bottle...

I used to play this in Jr. High at Math Field Day competitions. Turn up five number cards, and try to use +, - / or * to get the first 4 to equal the fifth. Great for speeding up your mental math skills. Similar feel to Set, Ricochet Robot, Bongo. Of course, those games would probably work too...

Very simple to explain, can accomodate as many players as you have sets. I think the standard game has four sets but you could buy two sets and play with eight etc

the game of 24 is rather blatantly mathmatic. Players are trying to be the first to use some combination of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with all four numbers listed to get a total of 24.

This is on the upper end of your player number range - it requires 4-8 players, although I guess 3 may work also? Anyway, lots of math - adding up the number of gems, dividing the payoff every round, estimating the probability of drawing another treasure/hazard card. Also, it plays very quickly (on BSW, only about 5 minutes). If it's taking too long, you can always reduce the number of tunnels explored.
