The highlight of the WABA calender took place on 10/12/2011 this year. The turnout was great and there was plenty going on to keep players occupied. The draw prizes were arguably the best ever and, most importantly, there were plenty of new and enthusiastic faces at the meet.

But who cares about all of that - did we break the games-played record? Add your entries to the list to find out . . .

Ian, Jason, Ivan, Ha and I warmed up with the progenitor of 7Wonders. It takes a couple of games to work out the combos, but was enjoyed none the less by all.

Ian brought his shiny new copy of Quarriors! for Jason, Ivan and I to play. It looks really good on the table and is like gaming candy to the hobby-gaming uninitiated, but didn't completely click with me. This may have something to do with my notoriously dismal dice luck - perhaps another play or two will reveal it's appeal.

Eric gave me my pre-order copy of Panic Station at the meet and we cracked open the shrink, stuck stickers on wooden discs and gave this hotness game a run.

Ian, Jason, Ivan, Ha and I were pitted against each other in this parasite-infested space station. Despite knowing that Ivan was infected from round 1, he still managed to spread his pox to two of us in quick succession. The uninfected were shooting bilious aliens and dishing out gas cans to keep themselves disease-free, but ended up handing all of the gas required to win the game to the enemy.

A fun traitor-mechanic game that sits nicely between the Resistance and BSG in terms of depth and length of play. Will definitely be giving this another run in the near future.

We had a small game to start with, and then a much bigger game with 10 people, with secret missions, and out came the observer balloons too.

Both were fine combats with some remarkable feats. One was when ariaflame and my plane collided. I flew away unscratched, ariaflame's plane flew into the ground.

Aidan is a valuable resource for anyone flying, he has a intuitive grasp of aerial combat it seems.

My strafing run was not a complete success, but I was largely unchallenged as the enemy's attention was on one of the Central Powers' balloons.

A decisive victory for the Central Powers.

We started this epic Tales of the Arabian Nights style game with 8 players.

The board unfolded, and the City took shape in the usual way, you roll to move and then you pull and place a tile to build the city.

A couple of people got to ride with the Wild Hunt, and the friendly balloonist gave a lift to a couple of people who headed straight to the Factory to grab an important quest item.

I managed to catch the Entropy plague in my first turn, darnit...but I finally did manage to join the Pugilist Guild, ironically, as I was bristling with weapons that gave me better pluses.

Something I had never seen before, playing this game....one of the characters goes bad, a la Betrayal at House on the Hill, and goes stalking the other players to kill them. This happened not once, but twice during our game and it was quite unnerving. The City of Chaos is full of surprises, even to those foolish enough to think they know the place. Well, it is the City of Chaos after all.

Towards the end of the game...or rather 11o'clock when we had to pack up, most people were in possession of clues that would enable them to finish the game, but were either blocked by rats, overflowing sewers or fallen trees. People of course who were not so fortunate had obtained sewer worker followers and ratcatchers, which would help clear the way - but no clues.

Another thing that I'd never seen before was people wandering blithely into the Necropolis and surviving if they didn't have the proper Quest Item. Huh.

Unfortunately Dana and Jayden had to leave early, and really, Dana at that time, about 6.00pm was the one in the best position to win, having quite a few clues. Probably would have won in the next hour.

Players came and went, leaving a hard core of the indefatigable Aiden and Rob and I. I think we would have actually have finished if we hadn't gone out to photograph the eclipse every so often.

As it was, Aiden was in possession of the most clues, and closest to where he needed to be to find the source of the City's Chaos.

Actually, it's not so bad to be a squibbly head...

I visited Byronitar and all I got were these lousy 3 groats...but boy did I need them! Wretched pickpockets.

The game is unapologetically epic, even more so with eight players but for those who like this style of game, and who have an interest in other people's stories while waiting for their own turn, it's a gem.

The other advantage of more players is that it cycles the deck more rapidly.

Very good to haul this game out again, it's not for everyone, but I hope that those who had a play of it enjoyed it for the time that they were able or inclined to. I had a ball!

Jess and I met a family who were visiting WABA for the first time. The wife (whose name I have forgotten, I'm afraid) was really interested in trying Incan Gold, as was the rest of the family (Peter, Julian and Val) Jess and I had never played either.

Hong knew the game already and taught it and won the first game.

It was fun (though not a game I'd add to my collection at this point. Maybe when we have kids).

The group enjoyed it so much, they played a second time while I went and browsed the trade table.

Val, the youngest child won the second game, and I think she was pretty happy about it.

Next up Jess wanted to play her favourite game that we have played from the WABA collection so far, Aqua Romana.

Pria and Jocelyn were looking for a game to play and joined us.

It's a fairly simple to play, but tricky game. Fairly quiet, but you can also be pretty mean if you know what you're doing.

Jocelyn, who had a bad start, ended up staying in the game the longest. Because of the mechanic that if you score the same score as another player, you go to the next (higher) available space, she managed to take the game.

It's still Jess' favourite.

We were signed up to play Fische Fluppen Frikadellen, and it was due to start at any moment, so Jess, Ian and I needed a quick game, so we pulled out one of our own - Turn the Tide. It's one of the games I bought specifically to play at work in the lunch breaks, so Jess hadn't played it before either.

I taught and we got a game in. Ian took it, with Jess in second and me in distant last.

It's been a big hit at work (where the group prefer a more basic game) and even though it's fairly simple, I find it quite interesting.

I joined the 15 person annual Fische Fluppen Frikadellen game. I couldn't list all of the players, so I will just say that Jess and I accounted for two of them.

We started on Warren's Island. I managed to place second over all (Behind Daniel I think? And who took third?)

I found it very fun to be a part of the big game, but not sure the game would do much for me as a single board.

Having failed miserably at the frantic FFF, I set up Elder Sign with Grug, Jess and Hong, and were joined at the last minute by two others whose names I've forgotten (sorry!).

It was a tough fight, with a few adventure cards really causing us trouble, but in the end we managed to scrape a victory before the Old One awoke.

The game played really well with six, not too much downtime and everyone's weighing in on everyone else's turn. There were lots of shouts of elation and despair with every dice roll.

Sat down for this with Tegan, Alaister and Kylie. Although we muddled the rules a little in early turns, I enjoyed the game and would be keen to try it again, or its gorgeous looking sequel. Dumb luck prevailed and I managed to come away with the victory.

Matt and Celine only had another hour to spare before they had to get home to their baby, so I quickly taught them Ankh Morpork, with the warning that the game can be quick or long, depending on the players and the luck of the cards.

We managed a quick game though, I won with one of the Lord personality cards (I forget which).

I really like this game a lot. Was probably my favourite of the day.

It was also our last game of the day. We were there from 9 till about 5 or 5:30 (I think?).

Our first Decembacon, and a lot of fun! Thanks everyone!

Renato taught this to myself and Tegan (I'd watched another game earlier so had a loose understanding). Great game, and very unique. I did have a tendency for placing the odd illegal piece though, causing my seemingly perfect ship to fall apart... Miraculously we all managed to survive, but Renato's impenetrable juggernaut, bristling with lasers, was the clear winner, with a final score in the 90s.

Tim brought this and we played a 7 player game with some us not having played before, including me, Dan and Mark. I don't remember the names of the other 3 players.

Apparently the game isn't meant to be played by more than 6, which may explain why I only thought it was ok. It was quite simple and I can see that in the right group and mood (especially with alcohol involved) it could be a lot of fun.

With the Pegasus ship from Pegasus and the Cylon Fleet board from Exodus.

I played this with Hadassa, Chris, Emily, Mark and Mark because we'd played it quite a few times before but not for a while.

There were no Cylons (except Chris as the very human-like Cavil Cylon Leader) until we reached Kobol, when Emily (Tory) and I (Cally) became Cylons. That was only at distance 4 and the humans never managed to get any further, but it took a long time for them to die.

The Trade Federation (Greg, Roger) vs The Republic (Aidan, Owen).

The Trade Federation eked out a narrow victory. Anakin was one move away from blowing up the mother ship and deactivating the droid army. Darth Maul had 1 life point left. With consecutive moves, he managed to kill Obi-wan and race into the palace, scything through 3 palace guards for the victory.

I really liked it (despite losing two Lava Leapers right near the start and effectively being out of the game from that moment on). Got another game in at Myriad on Tuesday night - this could possibly be my favourite game at the moment!

I think Roland won?

Good game of Cosmic towards the end of the night, with plenty of laughter, tears, swearing, trash talk and closed-eye concentration!

I won as the changelling (played incorectly, but possibly more interesting than the real way) against Warren (Hacker), Ernest (Xenophile) and Hong (a far too effective Trickster).

I played 6 games of this, with the selection method random for the first game and with the three non-winners removing a card from previous game for the next game to be replaced with three random ones. I'm surprised a) how much I played this, b) how much I enjoyed this, and c) how close I actually managed to come in several games. All cards were randomly chosen from all decks.

Game 1: Billy 10, Jason 9, Ernest 8, Hong -3
Game 2: Jason 31, Billy 30, Hong 26, Ernest 25
Game 3: Jason 38, Hong 33, Billy 32, Ernest 29
