This was a fun game and playing teams was cool. It was really fun to hear Jeff and Teddy arguing the entire game like an old married couple.

I enjoy many of the games in the Ticket to Ride family, but I think the Team Asia version is my favorite of them all. Each team gets racks on which to display the cards that are available to either of them.

2. Ticket to Ride: Team Asia

I’m listing this under Team Asia but will list the combined play totals for all maps because if I tried to separate them out...we would be here all week. Like I said, this is a game that always gives you a goal to strive for, whether it’s making sure you have some Lucknow or just double-checking you can tell your Locarno from your Lugano. But my favorite version is the Team Asia variant, which combines the thrill of the original with a more route-heavy scoring reward, and crosses it with a Hanabi-esque requirement of silent trust and teamwork. I originally got the expansion map for just this reason, and played it a lot last last year; this year, player count vagaries have prompted me to play the flip side (Legendary Asia) much more, which I hardly got to try last year! (The mountain route discards make it play significantly faster than the original.)

Plays in 2016: 22
Plays in 2017: 26

Jason & Korey 152 (winners), Max & Chuck 147, Chris & Michael 131

Our game of TtR Team Asia was one of the closest that I can remember. Max and Chuck scored a lot of points on long routes and earned the 10 point bonus for having the longest continuous route. Michael and I managed to earn the 10 points bonus for the most completed tickets by having 11 compared to J&K's 10 and M&C's seven. Amazingly, Jason and Korey won the game without either bonus.

d10-1 Dream gift game

Most of my top wishlist games are newer or Japanese games. Here are some other ideas:

• Ticket to Ride variants/expansions (I only have the original it would be fun to try more, including PnP fan expansions)
• Other Days of Wonder games I don't have.
Paperback
• Games with nice components from Blue Orange or HABA; Games from these companies are much better than Ravensburger, IMO
Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures starter set/basic pieces
Loopin Louie
Doodle Quest - these are at Ollies
Sushi Panic! I just saw this on the thrift list.
Focus
Minecraft Card Game - The kids are currently in to Minecraft...this might be fun to try.
• Expansions for D-Day Dice
• Timeline variants - We have two of these and my wife really likes them
• Travel version of games - Waterproof Spot It, Travel Quirkle, that type of thing.

I also would appreciate the parts to finish some of my previously thrifted games, especially The Magnificent Race or cool bits to pimp out my existing games.

I have an almost complete VS Spider-Man vs Doc Ock starter set that I thrifted a while ago. I am just missing one MSM-027 Alley-Oop! card. Would love to complete that so we can give it a try.

I also need a board for Risk Plant v Zombies. I thrifted a copy of this over a year ago and it ended up having everything except the board. Not a big deal because my son likes the minis, but it might be nice to try the actual game sometime.

d10-2 Games that you are currently enjoying

Forbidden Island - Played this with my son for the first time last night. We also played Ghost Fightin' Treasure Hunters at Gen Con. He really enjoyed both. So I am certainly going to be looking for more co-ops to play with him.
Deep Sea Adventure - Quick to set up and play with some light strategy
Castle Panic - Fun solo or with a group
Friday - Fun solo game
Ticket to Ride – This is a great game with strategy that I can break out with my family/friends
Lords of Waterdeep – I love the openness of the worker placement mechanic
Splendor - Quick to pick up and learn with some basic strategy
Camel Up - Very fun game with some strategy
Innovation and Red7 - both fun card games
D-Day Dice - I got this from Thrifty Santa last year and I really like it.

I tend to measure games these days by their inclusion of solitaire rules to give them a better chance of getting off the shelf.

d10-3 How much do you like: Ameritrash, Eurogames, Family, Party, War, or Strategy games?

I personally like Eurogames the most.
I have played Twilight Struggle, but I don't typically play games that take that long. Under an hour is more typical.
I haven’t played any war games. Unless you count Memoir '44 or D-Day Dice. (both of which I liked) If I did, I would prefer it be a battle/war of interest like something from the Revolutionary War or War of 1812 (US)...even better if it could be played solo.

I am pretty open to new experiences.

I also seem to like games which have some aspect of push your luck. I like games with dice rolling.

I do not like Cards Against Humanity or other "games" with similar NSFW "themes".

d10-4 Do you play games with children? If so, what ages?

I play with my son who is 7. He likes to play King of Tokyo, Rhino Hero, Spot It, and Pokemon Yahtzee Jr. He is also really interested in the Pokémon TCG and recently has been buying more cards. He likes the cards more than the game and doesn't care too much about value. He just likes cool cards.

I also have a daughter who is 12, but it is harder to get her to play a game. She has been playing Rubik's Race with her friend. She is into Steven Universe.

d10-5 How much interaction do you want with Santa?
I don't need to be contacted everyday, but I would like to know Santa is real. So somewhere in the middle.

d10-6 What other hobbies/interests do you have? Anything else to help Santa find the right gift for you.

Outside of board games I like LEGO and Japanese language and culture (I do know how to play Go).
I know it is unlikely, but there are so many interesting Japanese games out there, any of those would be really cool to get.

I am pretty open to new, fun gaming experiences...I have marked quite a few games in the db that I want to play. Overall, if it is something fun and interesting I will enjoy it and give it a go.

d10-7 Which would you prefer to receive? One game high on your wishlist OR Several games you don't know, but that look interesting

Of course, a game or bits high on my wishlist would be great, but I will be happy to try something that I don't know. The fact that there are surprises under the tree is one of the best parts of this exchange for me.

I am including all the variants of the Ticket to Ride Game here. I like playing the team variant found in Team Asia most of all, but enjoy all of the various maps, plus trying the different maps with Alvin and Dexter.

Biblios
I got absolutely crushed by Anastasia in this game. I had so much money going into the Auction, which worried me. I didn't give myself much of it, and I had to believe that Anastasia gifted herself a whole lot of high-value cards. This worry was exacerbated when basically just middling crap and small-denomination money showed up in the auction. Even with my grabbing most of the change-value cards, I managed to score three points at the end of the game, to Anastasia's thirteen... totally whacked.

Xia: Legends of a Drift System
I played Xia, and I LIKED it. Here's the thing, WAY back when, as my every-so-often game group decided to star pool-buying games as a group and giving them to one specific member at the close of our meetups, we chose Xia as the first game and I walked away with it. We played it several times, and I felt a great pang of regret because I wanted it to be Merchants & Marauders in space, but it fell so short of that. Fast forward six months or so, and I was looking at the box on my shelf, having sat there unplayed for all that time, and thought I would like to play it again. I did. It was great. Why? Because it's NOT Merchants & Marauders in space, it's the closest thing to pure beer & pretzels hilarity I have on my shelf. Random as all get out. I know we've discussed this game a lot recently, actually, so I'll spare the detail. Basically, I don't have a lot of swingy, random, amusing games of chaos and odd situations. This is the one, and I'm glad for it.

My father- and brother-in-law were in town with the rest of my in-laws this weekend and Emery (brother-in-law) wanted to play something he'd not tried before. I thought about his typical lighter-fare-leaning preferences, and suggested "fly around in space ships and probably die a lot." He was all-in for that. Mark (father-in-law) was happy to tag along (despite being a MUCH heavier gamer). We started simply and I ended up cashing in on a rich, local trade route, but after a long bout of exploration I had to dock at The Smuggler's Den or I'd run out of energy. I got a bounty for this. Emery then drew a mission that had him hunt down an Outlaw player (which was me, since the Scoundrel had not yet spawned). I could tell he was coming after me, but I had a souped-up level 3 engine and shields, so I figured I was in good shape to out-run him. I did those for a while, but he had the ship that let him slip through planetary shields without difficulty if he got some good rolls. Well, he did, and no matter how far I ran, he could short-cut through a planet and get to me pretty handily. Twice in a row he nailed me with big damage from his level 2 blaster, and my crappy shield was worth next to nothing. I limped along and eventually got caught again. Emery needed two damage to kill me... he rolled a one! I lived another turn, then tried to ram him as a last-ditch effort. I rolled so low since my engine was mostly destroyed, and he survived.

I respawned and Emery drew another mission to kill the player on his left... me, again. This time, I souped up my ship a lot and tried to gun for him first. I did a lot of damage with a missile shot, but he closed the gap on his turn and basically killed me again. I ran away and got blown up in an asteroid field to deny him the kill.

Meanwhile, Mark blind-jumped into the sun, which remains my favorite single thing that can happen in Xia. It cracks me up every time.

Given the scuffle between Emery and I, Mark had lots of time to build up some cash without issue. Emery and I got a lot of missions completed for plenty of fame, but Mark had the slow grind. He bought the first tier-two ship right as the "Viking" title came out, which incentivizes players to kill-by-ramming. Well, he had a big, new ship and Emery was two spaces away with a half-damaged tier-one ship. The choice was simple. Mark had a level 3 engine and rolled a d12 against Emery, and landed a 12. It was overkill, and he got two fame points for both killing Emery and grabbing the title for the win. It was hilarious and a lot of fun. We all enjoyed it. It reminds me that I really do enjoy this sort of game, just not all the time. But when I do...

Ticket to Ride
We played six-player/three-team Ticket to Ride Asia--Anastasia and I against two teams of my in-laws. We dominated, mainly due to going all-in on end-game destinations and a few turns burned for collaboration. Normal TTR or TTRE? Enjoyable, light gateway games etc... we all know this. But TTR Team Asia? This game is fabulous. I really like it--like, somehow it transcends set collection tropes and takes on this bluffing, metagaming, guessing element that is really delicious. With a full three teams and six players, the board is crowded, tension is high, and the choices are legitimately much richer than the standard game. This expansion is really the reason I keep TTR around--I like other "gateways" better but this game is very fun with the six-player niche when the same six players are not keen on Eclipse...

Sushi Go Party! x2
My sisters hung out with Anastasia and I on Sunday and we (as we literally ALWAYS do when they're over) got a huge platter of take-out sushi and dove in. Appropriately, we followed our decadence with two rounds of Sushi Go Party! which never ceases to make me smile. The first game was such intense hate-drafting, perhaps to a degree I'd never seen with us four players. We had a lot of consistently-low scores due to the constant combo-breaking. I won, barely, with just north of forty points after round three. The second game was massive points due to Menu and Onigiri allowing for a lot of good reach for the big, unique cards. Menu might be my favorite special card... it adds a bit of extra "card game" to the game without dumb rules overhead (like Fruit, which I HATE).

Puerto Rico
1v1 with Anastasia and I lost by four points! I managed to snag Small Market, Large Market, and Office along with a Coffee Plantation/Roastery and lots of Corn... so I ran with it as hard as possible with sheer money in the game, but I still got out-shipped by Anastasia despite trying to Captain her goods to rot on the docks multiple times. The timing was perfect in this game--with a long window of my controlling Builder and Trader followed by a long window of her controlling Craftsman and Captain. It just panned out really well, and was a super-tense session. Love it forever and always.

Patchwork x2
We got a little spectator action as Ted wanted to watch "a geem! play a geem!" so Anastasia and I set up Patchwork and gave a few buttons to Ted to rub together as we played. I lost by a very small margin in the first game, then came back with a vengeance to... lose by a much broader gap in the second game. Sheesh.

Innovation Deluxe x3
I taught Anastasia and my older sister, Becky, this game while my younger sister, Ann, did some homework following our Sushi binge. This is the same Innovation Deluxe that showed up on my doorstep without explanation (or my having backed it etc...). Curious, still. I have no answers. That said, we played a few games and Becky and Anastasia really enjoyed it once it "clicked." Of course, knowing the cards helps a lot in this game, but in the three sessions we played, everyone fared quite well. Demand and non-demand effects made a lot of sense and the flow picked up as we played again and again. I really do like this one a lot. Becky noted it's really surprising to her how much the game really does feel like a civilization game without anything more than a deck of cards. I mean, it's plenty abstract, but its very thematic all the same.

On My Mind:
Penny has officially kicked her colic! It's done! We've had a week+ straight of days free of inconsolable, inexplicable sadness, and morale has risen quite a bit (to no one's surprise!). Hooray!

We also baptized Penelope yesterday, which is what predicated my in-laws and local family being at our place all weekend. We're so pleased to have her baptized and it was a lovely service. Ted and I wore matching bow-ties, too. Cute, right? Anastasia and I are totally burnt out, though. Out introversion is spent beyond the limit and I'm glad everyone had a nice time... but are no longer at our house!

But seriously, Penelope kicked her colic. That's a big freaking deal.

EDIT:
ChaddyBoy commissioned several board game artists to make 1950s-era travel posters for some top-100ish games, but under the criterion that they must be games they did not illustrate. The first is Vincent Dutrait's take on Blood Rage, and it is AMAZING!

Legendary Asia

A difficult game.
She blocked my direct route from Krasnoyarsk to Singapore. I just barely made it on the detour I was forced to make. But she also got greedy with tickets. And forgot about the difficult terrain. So she failed to complete three!!! costing her 25 points.

Forgot to log one on the 8th, so you get two for the price of one.

My top score on this version.
Again we played with the Characters [fan expansion]

This time I had a character that allowed to to return ALL tickets I picked up on the sacrifice of one whitetrain. I had one train left on my last turn. I used the safety net to draw extra tickets and scored an extra 7 points for an already completed ticket.

Her character gave her extra blacktrainblacktrainblacktrain at the beginning of the game. She used one of them.

Her biggest problem came from one poorly placed train early in the game. Hanoi<>Macau. That blocked my ticket from Singapore<>Macau. I immediately countered by placing Calcutta<>Mandalay so I could get to Macau via Xian. That ended up blocking her far more effectively than she had blocked me. She never recovered. soblue

Note that none of these were deliberate blocks. We don't play that way. They were simply attempts to optimise our own routes. After the game we analysed our routes, and she realised she would have been better off going via Xian as I ended up doing. In fact had she done so, she probably would have won! It certainly would have been a much closer game.

Bringing this for its card holder racks (for use with Commands & Colors: Napoleonics Expansion #6 – EPIC Napoleonics). Would be nice to play the team Asia game, if we can find a base set of the game, as I won't have one with me.
