I often shy away from card driven games because a lot of my game play is solo. So unless there is a strong solo option I just don't care. But listening to Mark Herman talk about the game on several podcasts led me to buy this when it was out of print. I even bought the mounted mapboard. I have played this several times with a friend and I really enjoy it. There are several titles I am going to list that a Herman podcast interview led me to pick up.

Pre-game opinions: Oh boy, this one is the big game on the list that out of everything I want to tackle this challenge and complete one solitaire game throughout the year. My initial purchase of this game was mainly since I was starting to get into wargames I heard about how Empire of the Sun has quite the reputation in the SGOYT list of not being able to be completed. Well hopefully I can tackle this beast this year!

 9   Empire of the sun
 N/A   Exploding Kittens NEW!
 8.5   Codenames x2

Empire of the Sun: Completed our game. I surrendered Japan on Turn 11. I had not formally been defeated, but the Japanese fleet was in shambles with big US Army forces on Luzon, headed for Manila. As long as he captured Manila on turns 11 or 12 he would win the game via strategic bombing. He had about 99% certainty, and I wanted my table back.

It took us 9 hours to play the game total. I think with practice we can likely bring that down into the 6ish range. I did learn a lot of important lessons in the game:

1. Japan has to be superaggressive in the first four turns, while the Allies are not ready to fight the war. From that point on it is a defensive, reactive war with carefully considered offensives.
2. The Japanese fleet does best in well protected bases, far from Allied aircraft. A single fighter squadron in a big offensive will occupy fleet elements, and it can turn the battles bigtime if the heart of the Japanese fleet can respond to what the US is doing. The high number of intercept events in the Japanese deck helps tremendously too.
3. After the initial offensives, Amphibious shipping points need to place Japanese divisions on every island possible.
4. Interservice rivalry is one of the most useful items in the game to punish your opponent.
5. There's a specific US Event that lets the Russians attack Manchuria, and get 2 needed resource centers from Japan. Without this event, the US typically has to invade the home islands. I think the game was unwinnable for my opponent if he had not drawn this card.

Codenames: Great for casual nights and casual gamers. I'm ready to play something meatier.

Exploding Kittens: Played with the NSFW expansion. Not really many meaningful decisions to make here. The winner was fortunately dealt three of the Defuse cards, which rode him out of the two explodes he found. I found no meaningful decisions to be made and was overall unimpressed. Grace is right- TSS.

On my mind: MLK day is coming, and I'm hoping for a bigger gaming day. Not sure if it will come together, but I hope it does.

Getting back into a long stalled painting project. I'd like to finish the 36 figures I've had in progress in the next two weeks. I'm hoping to be home more this week (one of my resolutions for this year is to try to limit how much I do as I think I was way overbooked last year). Already seeing signs that this week may completely destroy that.

I played it a dozen or so times when it was first released and again with the updated rules recently.

I got crushed but now I have the rules down pat and it's rekindled my interest.

PbeM: ACTS, Vassal and Dropbox (I will teach how to use any or all of these if you're unfamiliar. Once you have these set up your wargaming life is greatly improved).

Only interested if you can average a minimum of a play a day. I'm on my computer most of the day so play quickly.

Also looking for a game of Plan Orange which uses the same system. See below.

Years ago I was sold the first edition for a steal, from a very cool and generous member of our local wargaming group.

It sat on my shelf mocking me year and and year out, until the second edition was announced, complete with mounted map and solitaire rules.

So the first edition hit the trading block and the new edition stepped in to take it's place, staring me down from across the room.

Calling me names and insults that I'm too classy to repeat here. Insinuating that I'm too scared to face the notoriously steep learning curve. That I'll never man-up, dive in and find out for myself what all the praise is about.

To counter I made myself trade away, Fire in the Sky: The Great Pacific War 1941-1945 just to ensure that this would be my Pacific game of choice.

First though, I gotta take that shrink-wrap off.

10   War of the Ring (second edition)
 9   Empire of the Sun
 9   Tichu
 10   Dungeon Lords
 N/A   Churchill

Really great week for gaming. Lots of big and exciting things!

Empire of the Sun: Played on Pearl Harbor Day to commemorate. This is one of the more complicated games I've got and I was really happy to place it out because there's a lot of neat things working in it. It had been too long, and it showed- we got in one full turn (the opening attack on Pearl Harbor and East Asia is considered a turn, though its a lot less complicated). My wife was not impressed that our 2 hours of play time netted one turn of gameplay. But I (as the Japanese Empire) pounded the US fleet in Hawaii, took the Phillipines and Hong Kong. The US player is unhappy because his Army and Navy are fighting (interservice rivalry), and because I sent submarines to the Panama Canal he doesn't get any reinforcements next turn. We've left it on the table and will hopefully complete this week!

I really do enjoy getting games out on historical dates and playing- it is a fun way for me to connect the history of it to what I'm doing in my life. I'm getting the sense that Pearl Harbor Day isn't something that's much in the American consciousness anymore, and that does make me sad- this was as impactful to that generation as the Kennedy assassination was to their children, or as the September 11 attacks were to my generation.

War of the Ring: Met a BGG/playtesting friend in person and got in a game. It was really exciting to play someone who is pretty active online, and that I know to be solid. I played toe to toe with him most of the way, but did something stupid and left Mordor open near the end. He sat on Path of the Woses until I had a low muster turn and sprung an unpleasant surprise. The following turn I rolled a ton of Eyes and my goose was cooked.

Tichu: Still wonderful. Want to play it again. And again!

Churchill: Nonhistorical outcome! Germany survived the war, but Japan lost...because it was invaded by Great Britain??? Our winner pulled out the game as the United States because he dominated issues and won each of the conferences. Comrade Stalin got stymied on his final drive into Berlin, and I think the US choke on the Western Front removed any chance of victory I had.

Dungeon Lords: I played well here, well enough that with a little luck in combat cards and fatigue I avoided all conquering. I did manage to get frozen out of three orders, but still took care of business. This was a rare occasion that we played this game without a player making a large mistake (4th place was 8 points behind first), so the game was overall really good. We also got to use dungeon setup cards to add some variety. I don't feel a need to use them every game, but they definitely were fun.

On my mind: Rogue One on Thursday. I won't be making as big a deal as I did for Episode VII, but I'm excited to see it. Especially as I think there'll be some fun trailers with it too!

Also, Overwatch Holiday Event: All I want is for them to turn the payload into Santa's sleigh.

1. Empire of the Sun

A classic here, but one that I had never tried until this year. A revelation for me. Only soloed, but even that was great fun. So many clever things going on in the game, and each and every card has to be considered very carefully before being played. Really looking forward to playing this again, as there are so many strategies to be pursued, and of course the card draw makes for near endless replayability. Those epic carrier battles were really tense affairs.

2. Battles of the Bulge: Celles

Having enjoyed the two 1066 titles from Revolution Games, I thought I'd take the plunge with their Bulge game. Very taken with this simple system and the narrative it can provide with such a small footprint and small number of counters. Some new-to-me mechanics such as movement and combat rolled into one, and the ability to use layered activations to dislodge the enemy make this game fresh and enjoyable. Chit-pull makes it solo-friendly which is a big plus for me.

3. Sicily II

I have enjoyed everything OCS that I had played so far, and this was no exception. It may be a small map for OCS, but there's a lot going on. The air war is a game in itself, and that combined with the naval component and the invasion with amphibious landings makes for a real brain-burner. Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Tunisia II is on the horizon next year.

4. Desert Fox Deluxe

This mini-monster ticked a lot of boxes for me. It gives you the ability to play out the entire North African Campaign, including Tunisia in a manageable(ish) format. Or you can play one of the several scenarios. The rules were not the easiest to digest, but the sheer scope of the game made up for this in my book. Some nice mechanics going on in terms of supply (felt like proto-OCS) and the combat. Will definitely give it another spin.

5. Battle of the Little Bighorn

I liked some of the mechanics in this one, and the narrative that they produced. I know nothing about this historical event other than what Hollywood has shown me! A nice solo experience, but I'm not sure how well it would play 2-player as it doesn't appear that Custer has much of a chance.

6. The Guns of Gettysburg

A Gettysburg game that can be played in day! Normally games on this battle involved 4 maps and squillions of counters. Nice to see such an innovative take on the battle (as you would expect from Simmons). I enjoy the aesthetics of this game as much as anything, it really feels like you are a commander looking at a map about to send a courier with a message to your various regiments. The way artillery is handled is also nice, and the random arrivals give the game a lot of replay value.

7. Gazala: The Cauldron

Celles' sister game, and has all the signs of being just as good. Haven't ranked it as highly yet as I haven't played it quite as much as Celles. The system seems to stand up to a move to a different theatre. This battle is wide open, and I mean wide open. At times you can feel there are too many choices, and that leaves you with some agonizing choices. That's my kind of game!

8. La Bataille des Quatre Bras

My first foray into La Bat, and so far I like what I have found. I have played some BAR and love that system. There are some similarities in terms of granularity and the procedural nature of the games. One thing I'm still not sure of is which rules to use? At the moment I'm using the rules which came in the box. But there are two (at least two perhaps) standard system sets of rules (Regs and Marie Louise) which can be used. The maps and counters are very evocative of the period; and the various phases of the game give you a lot of interesting choices. You also have to be aware of the Command rules which can restrict what you are able to do. I enjoy the frustration this can cause as your units sit there unable to move as you would want them to, very realistic! I'm not sure if I would have the stamina to set up one of the bigger battles for a solo run-through, but you never know...

9. Festung Europa: The Campaign for Western Europe, 1943-1945

I have only played this twice solo, so I need to explore the game more, and undoubtedly I'm losing a lot by playing solo. That said, I saw enough here to show me that the game could be a very enjoyable game opposed. Like so many Card Assisted/Driven Games this one throws up a lot of difficult choices. Seems to simulate the theatre well, and keeps the rules overhead fairly low. The only slight negative was that at times I felt that I was playing replacement ping-pong as the Germans could use cards to replace step losses making for quite a bit of stagnation in the front lines. Very historical of course, but as a game mechanic it felt a bit dull at times. That could be down to me not using my imagination enough with the cards though, and not having played the game enough.

10. No Retreat 4! Italian Front: 1943-45

Another very enjoyable Card Assisted Wargame. More of a traditional hex and counter game, but the cards are vital. Lots of knacky little mechanics in this one to simulate what is a very difficult campaign to simulate and game. The landings work well, and Carl has succeeded in depicting the attritional nature of the campaign very well. I really enjoyed my game of this, and I'll definitely be returning to it in the new year.

In the end, apart from Empire of the Sun, I could have placed the rest of the games in almost any order. They are all great games which I really enjoyed, and many of them were so different in their mechanics and rules that they were difficult to compare.

I didn't get as much gaming as I'd have liked this year, so my list wont stretch to 10 entries.

1. Empire of the Sun

This is head and shoulders above the rest. The ambition and scope of this game are amazing. I've spent a fair amount of time on this game (and Plan Orange), what with reading the rules, going through Judd's excellent Vassal tutorial, background reading, tentative vassal moves. I still need to complete a game, yet still I love it.

2.Labyrinth: The Awakening, 2010 – ?

The Awakening expansion prompted me to revisit this game and reminded me just how good it is. The awakening/reaction markers bring a new mechanic to the game, and it's nice to have a stack of new cards for recent events.

3. Liberty or Death: The American Insurrection

I moved house this year, so have more room to play the larger COIN games (sadly I had already sold Fire in the Lake). I like the more subdued board with this one. Plays very well solo.

4. Terraforming Mars

A solid game. The theme is very strong, supported by the art on the cards. Our two player games have lasted about two and a half hours, which is too long, I'd rather it was an hour shorter.

5. Five Tribes

I bought this to play with the children (6 and 9). They liked it, and so did I. Some aspects feel tacked on (collecting sets of cards), I'd much prefer it if everything was focused on the board. I hope someone else runs with the 2D Mancala idea.

6. Ascension: Dreamscape

I'm always playing this; whether it's on my phone, or with the physical copy. Ascension is our family's staple deck builder.

7. Pandemic Iberia/Pandemic Legacy: Season 1

The Legacy edition has meant we played a lot this year. My wife is clearly much better at this than me, so I tend to let her drive. I found the story in Legacy a bit trope ridden and actually prefer the newly published Iberia version.

8. Blue Moon Legends

I picked this up second hand. A quick playing game, very interactive. Tons of replayability in the box.

9. Raptor

A quick filler for playing with the small people.

Boardgame Aesthete

Format: VASSAL PBEM

Expertise: I've played three or four games. Familiar with the rules, but not an expert. Trying to get better.

Teach? Not really - I'll help as much as I can, but would prefer someone who is at least familiar with the rules.

Prefer an average posting speed of once per day.

ETA: Opponents found - not seeking any more at this time. Thanks!

Place 60:
(Revealed 10/22)
