25 plays.
Actual plays higher, but I didn't log plays when I first joined BGG.

This game has been in my Top 20 since the year of its release, I think! 2001! Wow!

I don't like abstracts, but I do like settings and aesthetics. This one manages to provide an amazing presentation with a simple ruleset and an engaging abstract game I've never grown tired of. On your turn, place two wooden pieces (out of: wall, one of four palace colours, customer, stable, or roof). Claim palaces and make sure they score well. Sounds overly-simple, but it makes for one of the best games of passive-aggressive and aggressive-aggressive competition I have ever played. Bonus: short playtime for amount of competitive payoff (see also: Evolution!).

Why not yet played more? Another one I have since I was a child and which almost never really got played because it was for 3+ players. Not having played it in 12+ years, I know think this may be too cut-throat for my tastes, but I just need to try it again some time.

Summary of your gaming taste:
(From my profile) I tend to prefer medium-weight eurogames for my collection (leaning toward medium-heavy-ish lately), with quite a few lighter ones slipping in to fill up the gaps during a full day of games. Personally I love many (abstract) direct confrontation brainburner games (could play project GIPF games all day long), but don't get to play these very often with my regular gaming partners. Since I do still very much enjoy those games from my collection which are friendlier and lighter on interaction, I don't grumble about this too much.
I don't see the appeal in war games, nor in train games. I love elegant game systems, with complexity resolving out of simple rules. Once a rulebook needs more than a dozen or so pages, I start to consider the game flawed; ameritrash is thus (mostly) not for me.

Ten games that, altogether, approximate where your gaming tastes lie:
*  10  YINSH
*  9.3  Terra Mystica
*  9  Glen More
*  8.8  Bora Bora
*  8.6  Madeira
*  8.5  Keyflower
*  8.5  Concordia
*  8.3  The Voyages of Marco Polo
*  8.1  Ra
*  7.6  Keltis

Five popular/well-regarded games that you dislike:
*  1.9  Ticket to Ride: Europe
*  2.7  Dungeon Lords
*  3  Agricola: Farmers of the Moor
*  4.1  Small World
*  4.3  Arkham Horror

Five hidden gems:
*  10  Medina
*  8.6  Fealty
*  8.3  Turn the Tide
*  8.3  Yspahan
*  7.9  Metropolys

Do you use the BGG Rating scale (roughly)?
Yes

Do you write comments (with or without a rating)?
Yes, always. Sometimes they'll be just a sentence, but generally I go for at least a paragraph.

Do you rate games without playing them?
No

Do you rate games after one play?
(From my profile) I rate games once I suspect I have a feeling for what playing the game well will be like. Usually this comes after one game, but there are notable exceptions. (Go!) If I give a rating based on a single play, I'll note so explicitly, and I'll update the rating once I have played the game a few more times.

Any else of note:
263 games rated and commented. I frequently update rating and use a single decimal to try and indicate relative order for games. Generally my .9 ratings are strongly "almost but not quite up to the criteria for the next level up", while .1 through .8 are all within the previous bracket.

My average rating is 6.17 (quite a bit lower than last year; the more games I know, the less desire I feel to re-play the bad ones). Besides the two I listed above, I don't have any other 10s.

I didn't do geekbuddies myself until the previous iteration of this geeklist; then I saw some extremely on-point comments which I recognized as something I wanted to be able to locate swiftly; I'm being extremely picky with adding geekbuddies, though, needing a lot of overlap, and generally useful comments.)

The growth of my collection has markedly slowed down over the last three years, as I generally feel I have a very well rounded collection nowadays, and already don't get to play my favorites nearly often enough. This means that besides good mechanics, a game must also bring a very appealing theme to the table to still be bought. New additions do however still come in from g4gg wins or as gifts, which is interesting for making me play games I'd never have bought myself - I suspect a lot of those games will end up in math trades, though.

For my entire top 20 and my most played games, see my recent geeklist: 7+ years on the geek - a personal retrospective after 10,000 thumbs and 1,000 logged plays

1] Medina

My rating:  10 ; current BGG Avg Rating: 7.07; current BGG Rank: 685; I recommend it with 4 players.

- 7 plays, plus another ~10 plays from before I joined BGG

We don't play this nearly as often as I'd like, and my main gaming partner only plays grudgingly, but whenever we do play, its sheer brilliance keeps reaffirming itself to me. This really is a 4-player only game (despite it technically working acceptably with 3, and the recent second edition even including 2-player rules).

Careful timing, in combination with good spatial awareness, are key to this game, and as I discovered while writing up this top 20, those really are two aspects I care about greatly, so it's not so surprising that I like this game as much as I do.

For those of you who haven't yet had the pleasure to play Medina, what is it like?

You have a lot of very satisfyingly solid wooden pieces, hidden behind your player screen. Palace pieces in four colors, stables to expand palaces with, city walls, and the components of the market which will chain its way through the city. Plus four roofs in your color to finish palaces with and claim them as your own. Each turn, you must play exactly two of these pieces in the city. And that's always more than you want to play, and really also not nearly enough. A palace of a color needs to be finished before a new one of the same color can be started.

Whoever has the biggest palace of a color gains 1-4 bonus points, and whoever last connected one of their palaces to a city wall that runs to a tower at a corner of the city, will also gain 1-4 bonus points. (Additionally each piece in each palace scores a point, and palace pieces that connect to walls or to the market score additional points for that.)

There's four players. After you've had your turn, six more pieces will be added to the city before you can play again. Entire palaces can be erected and claimed in that time, but more likely, 3-4 palaces will inch just slightly closer to being the optimum size for claiming and holding as the largest. You could expand and claim one, but it's not quite large enough yet, and the one that's furthest along isn't anywhere near a wall or the market. Maybe go for the most valuable orange palace, even if it's still too small, attach all your stables during the next two rounds, and hope that'll be enough for it to stay the largest? You really don't want to expand any of those palaces any further now, because they'll be claimed for certain, then. Unfortunately you haven't claimed any palaces near the market yet, otherwise you could extend that in a beneficial direction. Go for a safe wall extension, then? But those pieces are far too valuable in the late game for connecting to the 4-tower! AAARGH!

Later during the game you'll still need to claim a black palace. You have no hopes of gaining the largest, after that monster six-piece palace that went up nearly unopposed, but you lucked out in getting to start a new black palace. Right next to the market, then? But wait - the grey palace will be claimed for certain next turn, and then someone else could start a new grey palace right behind your black palace, limiting its growth to a measly three pieces! Hrm, but with the market, that might still be worth it, particularly if you claim it swiftly, as it being the fourth black palace will mean that everyone will have to discard their remaining black pieces, probably causing them to miss crucial final turns in which you can finish connecting to that 4-tower!

It's breath-taking. It's agonizing. It's simply the best gaming experience ever. Not for everyone, I'm sure. But for me, absolutely.

Medina - 1 play
First Published 2001
10 years, 6 months, 11 days
Current Rating -  5

Counting this though the follow up play was with the second edition. There are a couple differences but the basics remain largely the same. It looks good when its completed but still remains a game that while I respect, I don't find much fun in playing. Often, one is uncertain how to proceed early and then the end game gets nasty and challenging as space becomes more challenging.

Darjeeling - 1 play
First Published 2007
8 years, 10 months, 16 days
Current Rating -  6

My second play took a long time coming and it was as I remembered - interesting but not enough to keep around. Happy to play a friend's copy from time to time although said friend sold her copy or is attempting to afterwards.

Igloo Pop - 1 play
First Published 2003
3 years, 0 months, 20 days
Current Rating -  6

This is one I keep around and enjoy as something different - still the best game of which I'm aware and have played that involves sound.

Jungle Speed - 1 play
First Published 1997
3 years, 0 months, 26 days
Current Rating -  8

Always fun for a change of pace. I do prefer the plastic totem over the wooden totem that caused a few injuries and near injuries from falling apart or such. It was clear my two opponents had never played before and the game ended quickly.

Saint Petersburg (second edition) - 1 play
First Published 2014
1 year, 5 months, 21 days
Current Rating -  6

Hadn't realized it had been that long since I last played. I prefer this one at three players where I think it shines. I'm starting to be able to enjoy the second editions added yellow phase.
