There seems to be no strategical depth in this game. It is simply draw cards - build routes - draw cards - build routes.

However, I played the game in a company where we did not block each other, and I do not know if blocking would add to depth.

Expansions:
Europa 1912: 5 plays

First played: 2006

This was the other game we got in our first order. Even though it may not be best with two, we got it due to its status as a gateway game favorite. It didn't fail for us---we were amazed with the great production and we played it many times. We even started playing the other maps online on the Days of Wonder website. We eventually ditched the long route tickets to make the game tighter, but this eventually became one of our gateway games that we don't really play any longer with just the two of us, even with the new 1912 expansion.

Comment: The tunnel is a neat rule. The train stations are so-so. The map is new, but really, if you played one TTR game, it seems like you have played them all. It's not bad, it's just so-so.

This was my first time at the club and along with Rowland, Meg and Scott, Elaine taught us a few games we hadn't played before.

Hindsight would say I shouldn't have thrown out my long route at the beginning of the game but I managed to snag the bonus points for longest route and completed another 5 short routes and managed to come in second to Elaine by 2 points.

In the spirit of playing several smaller games in the evining, Mark, Nigel, Tony and myself pulled out Ticket to Ride, Europe.

This well loved game went down a treat, with Nigel winning despite Mark doing his favourite tactic of scoring the longest sections, including the 8 section Northern route.

2 nil to Nigel.

I have never seen a game embraced by so many of the family. Even Mum, who usually just plays for the spirited conversation during play, was eagerly scanning the board for opportunities to complete routes. The near total lack of text in the game meant even the relatives who were hard of seeing could play (once the subtle difference between grey and black was explained and tunnels were clearly pointed out). The design, theme and artwork were also remarked upon by one and all. Everyone, it seems, does indeed love trains!

This game is highly regarded by the 'geek, although sneered at as a "gateway game". Still, I liked settlers and carcassonne, so clearly gateway games can be a lot of fun, right?

Well, this was apparently the exception. It looks nice, it plays easily, but it just isn't that fun, and the overwhelming luck factor of your opening hand is just way too apparent. What a dissapointment.

Quote:
OUTLOOK FOR 2010: Ticket to Ride will be my #1 played game in 2010. I'm not sure which version, but it will be -- and it might win both face-to-face and online plays! I'm still as addicted to it today as I became last year.

You'll notice the above quote is referring to the US map of Ticket. I was drinking the TTR-juice evidently, because I proclaimed that one of the versions would be my top-played game. Europe got close, but not quite. Even so, Europe also became my favorite version of TTR to date. The funny part is, I don't even own it! TTR became quite the obsession of my wife's family, to the point that her stepfather bought two copies of Europe, one for him and one for his daughter to take to college. 11 plays is the direct result of playing Europe with them during the year. I think it's freaking sweet that not only did we play it that many times with them, but also that the word back from his daughter is that TTR was a HUGE hit at college (UC Davis) and I guess several of those kids have bought the game to play with their families. That kind of stuff just warms my heart! Europe is terrific and I'm glad it made it here. By the way, I bought him the expansion for his birthday, and we've enjoyed that as well.

OUTLOOK FOR 2010: I'm going to guess nickel. I keep throwing new games on them, and with babies all over the place recently, it's harder to sit down and play this one.

Somehow we managed to squeeze in TtR Europe with the additional 1912 destination tickets on my downstairs glass table. We started with two long tickets and five short ones of which we had to keep at least three with only up to one being a long route. Eric was able to expand his way across Eastern Europe with too much interference from other players. My numerous completed short routes were not worth quite enough victory points once he received the 10 bonus ones for having the longest route (with Dave a close second).

I am a little embarrassed to say that I left this behind at the local thrift, knowing how popular of a game it is. The box was in near mint condition, and tons of pieces were scattered inside the box. Everything looked like it was in terrific shape. The box was extremely heavy and I had no patience to verify if all the necessary components were included. This is a shame because, in this condition, and if all pieces were actually there, I could have perhaps either traded this game or sold it for a decent amount. Please don't throw anything at me! soblue

Like many here at BGG, my wife Gretchen and I participated in a couple of Secret Santa exchanges this year: the big, annual BGG Secret Santa, and one specifically for Eastern Iowa. And boy, did our Santas come through: Ticket to Ride:Europe, along with Power Grid and two expansions! We're super excited to have both of these additions to our collection.

We did play a two-player game of Power Grid, just so Gretchen could see what it's about. PG is, of course, not good with 2 people, but she liked it well enough that we're both looking forward to a proper game.

TtR:E gets the honor spot, though, for kicking off a three-day TtR grudgefest. We gave Europe a spin a day or so after getting it. It was my second time playing the Europe map, and Gretchen's first. She won by a measly 3 points after claiming the European Express ticket. I demanded a rematch for the next night, in which she beat me again, albeit more soundly this time.

By this point, I was becoming eager to get out our neglected copy of the Switzerland expansion. So right after finishing our rematch, we went for it, and I finally clobbered my wife. Not being content to only be up 2-1 on me over two days, she did the honorable thing and requested a rematch on the Swiss map, so she could "redeem herself." It took place the next day and this time, she beat me. But this isn't over...!

Also, earlier this week, we went out and got our Christmas present to ourselves: an iPad, for which I immediately starting buying game apps with an iTunes gift card I'd received. My favorites so far for iPad are Small World and Kingsburg. I recommend both highly.

Finally, we hope to make some more memories tonight, as we're hosting a New Year's Eve game night! Happy New Year to all of you!
