I had a lot of new to me games this month and all of them are due to attending Geekway To The West. I have 15 new this month and it was hard to choose a best one of the month. It boiled down to maybe not the best game of the bunch but the one I had to most fun playing.

Best of May 2017:

When I go to Geekway, I always stay at a friends house that lives in St. Louis. This game was played at his house one of the evenings. What a simple game and so much fun. I laughed so hard playing this game that I had tears in my eyes. Pointing my foam gun at my wife's friend and having her look right back and me and say, "You wouldn't shoot me, would you" with sad puppy eyes... Sorry, it's already been determined. HA! In games like this where somebody is picked on, I'm usually the first one shot and out of the game. Somehow, I managed to win two out of three games. I like it so much, I got on my phone and ordered it for pickup the next day at the event.

More games I loved:

The first game I played at Geekway was Dimension. I've heard some buzz about it and wanted to try it out. After the first round, I immediately thought to myself, "My wife would love this game". She likes games that are puzzles and also the less direct competition the better for her. I thought it was great. The object of the game is to try and stack the colored balls according to 6 randomly selected rules. If you are able to get 11 balls stacked and not break any of the rules you get a bonus. I didn't get any bonuses in the 6 rounds. Oh, did I mention the rounds are timed. Yeah, you have to work fast to get those balls stacked up. Give this one a try if you like those puzzle type games.

This was the third Geekway that I've wanted to try Five Tribes. I guess the third time is the charm. There were four of us looking for a game to play, it was my turn to pick, Five Tribes was in the library, boom, played! The Mancala movement to pick an action has intrigued me on this one. I must say, I thought it worked great. Trying to plan out your move before your turn comes around is tricky though because it seemed without a doubt somebody would mess it up for me before my turn came around. In the first round, I picked up the Djinn that allowed me to place a camel on an open spot and boy did I place camels. This really boosted my score, but unfortunately, I didn't do anything else to help score me points and fell just a little short of winning. Overall, I really liked this game and would love to acquire it some time.

Another game I was slightly interested in playing was Inis. I'd heard some buzz on the podcasts and wanted to check it out. Wow, great game. There are three ways to win and trying to keep track of who is in a position to win, while also trying to keep yourself in some sort of striking distance is a trick. The card drafting at the beginning is interesting. You don't have to keep the card(s) you kept in the previous draws. I like that. It allows a little flexibility to explore a different option if you want/need to. The way the map builds out is interesting as well. The pieces are lovely and the game just flows so well. In both games I played, the winner really snuck up on me and I was blindsided. Great game.

Other new games that I enjoyed:

Spyfall 2 - I'd heard of Spyfall before and was glad to try it out. Nice little deduction game "in reverse". The spy is trying to figure out where everyone is and everyone is trying to find the spy. This is done by asking vague questions hoping to get an odd response from the spy, but not give too much info to the spy. Nice game.
Onitama - again a game I've heard a lot of buzz about and wanted to try. Glad I did. It's a great little abstract two player game, trying to capture the other person's pieces or get your master into their temple. The movement is limited to the cards, but when you use one, it's passed to your opponent. Oh, I was terrible at this game but really enjoyed it.
Mystic Vale - honestly, I only played this game because another guy in our group really wanted to try it out. So, we sat down and learned it two player. I was pleasantly surprised. It's an interesting twist on a deck builder, instead of adding cards to your deck, you manipulate the cards in your deck. Somehow I won, although I don't know how I pulled that off. Would I play it again, yes... would I buy it, probably not.
Carcassonne: Star Wars - A couple of the guys with us tried this out and loved it, so they coerced me into playing. It's Carc with a combat/dueling twist. You can try to claim a planet from another player and boom, out come the dice. It was ok, but another game I'd play but probably won't run out and buy.
Tsuro - Another game we played at my friends house after leaving Geekway for the day. I've wanted to try this game since the first time I've heard about it. I was not disappointed. You try to keep your stone on the board longer than anyone else. You do this by building paths for your stone to travel along that don't run into anyone else or leave the board. Another game I think my wife would like. If I can find this somewhere for cheap, I'd probably pick it up.
Good Cop Bad Cop - I probably enjoyed this one more than I should have. It's a light hidden role game. Trying to figure out who the good cops are and who the bad cops are. As with most hidden role games, I think the right crowd makes or breaks this game. Luckily, we had the right crowd and had fun playing.

Other New games:

I have to talk about Captain Sonar. A friend reached out to me prior to Geekway and asked if I'd like to get in on a game. Yeah, great! Got it scheduled and I was excited to play. It just fell flat with me. Nothing wrong with the group, we laughed, sassed, etc. But I just couldn't get into it. Maybe I'm just not good for real time games? I was disappointed, I truly wanted to like this game because it should be fun.
A couple of guys played The End is Nigh and had fun and dragged me into a game. Maybe dragged isn't the right word, I'm willing to try anything once. I tried this twice. It was ok with three players and somewhat interesting, but with four players I just didn't like it. It's a neat idea, trying to figure out secret roles (which I normally like) but it just didn't click with me.
One of the guys brought this huge box to the table and I thought "Holy Cow, what are we playing". It was The Red Dragon Inn 5. This box contains so much stuff! It took us quite a while just to figure out how to play a basic game. The game was light, simple and very take that. It was ok. I might play again, but not going to track down a game of it.
Last are a couple of card games, Scuttle! and Virulence: An Infectious Card Game. Both are simple, filler card games that were ok. I didn't hate them, I didn't love them. Virulence has the players simultaneously choose a card and then draw a card from the middle based on the rank of the card they chose. Most points at the end wins. Scuttle has you trying to collect treasure in a race to 21 points. Very swinging because you can steal the treasure of others.

Version ONE and TWO. Second edition is a great streamlining of the game, and is a great Gamer's Party game...

But the FIRST edition still has the cool factor of a more cut-throat play style, and the Yakuza expansion. I keep the second for general gaming, and the first to re-mod into the "Reservoir Dogs" version, in a metal suitcase. I may re-re theme it to a "John Wick" version. cool

It was Geekway!! I played lots of new games and few good old ones I still enjoy. Got to see a few people that I only get to see at this event.

We arrived at my friends house in St. Louis on Wednesday evening and jumped right into gaming. I taught Fred how to play Tally Ho!. I play this online quite a bit, but hardly ever in person. I think Geekway is the only time I've played it in person. I had the misfortune of having my foxes pinned between trees and hunters and was not able to get any birds to feast on. The really hurt me in the final scoring and lost the round. We only played one round since it was time to play something with the larger group.

One of the guys wanted to try Dominion. I don't care for this game at all. I like deck builders but this game just does not thrill me at all. I can't get into it. I really appreciate some theme. I made the best of it to enjoy the company of the group. I finished dead last. But that's ok.

I started Geekway off with a bang! The first game I got to play was Dimension. It's one that I have on my list to check out so that was great. You are trying to assemble the colored balls in a stack that follows rules that change each round. There are six rules per round and they may be like... green has to always touch orange, there can only be two blue, green can never be on the bottom... stuff like that. It really made my mind work and scramble to get the balls assembled before the timer ran out. I was not disappointed. I immediately thought to myself, my wife would really like this one. She likes those games that have a puzzle element, or a spacial element. I think this hit both of those. If you like that kind of game, give this one a look.

I then played Onitama. I had this on my list to check out as well. I always here the Dice Tower guys talk about how great this game is, so I was glad to give it a try. I got to play it twice. I thought I was doing well in both games, but lost both. I like that there is two ways to win, you can either take out all of the other person's pieces or move your master into the other person's temple. The fact that you have to pass the movement card to the other person after you use it is great and frustrating. I liked it a lot, but the reason I probably won't get it is, I don't have anybody in my house that I could get to play this with me. Just not going to be a great fit. Now, if somebody asked me to play I'd jump at the chance.

I needed to play something short before I needed to meet up with some people for a scheduled game play. We gave Virulence: An Infectious Card Game a try. It is a really light game and might be a good filler for some people. Everyone has the same deck of starting cards. You display a set of cards (worth points (positive or negative) and possible some replacement cards out in front of everyone. You then secretly choose a card to play from your hand. The person with the highest number gets the choice of the cards in the middle of the table. It was fast and light. Not something I'm going to pursue to purchase, but would play again if we need to play something quick.

I scheduled an opportunity to play Captain Sonar with a group of people. I was excited to play this game that is getting a lot of buzz from people. It's a real time game with two submarines trying to find each other and sink the other team. The captain is guiding the ship around the map, the radio operator is trying to figure out where the other team is and the first mate and engineer are trying to keep the systems online. It's hectic and crazy. We played 3 times. I'm glad I got a chance to play but realized this game is just not for me. The group was great, the components are great... I just didn't care for it. It was just too much going on at one time for me.
I did play another game later in the day as the captain with some people that wanted to try it. After that, I was done with Captain Sonar for the weekend.

One of the other guys was in charge of picking a game for us to play and he came back with a HUGE box. It was The Red Dragon Inn 5 and it was full of cards. Since three of the four of us had never played before, we chose basic characters and jumped in. It was a little difficult referencing the rules in this game. There's multiple rule books in the box. It would have been nice to have one book with everything in it... instead of trying to find the right book.
Another game that I'm glad I had the chance to play, but won't be running out to buy it. There was a lot of fun art on the cards and silly verbiage as well. It was fun with the guys and I was able to avoid drinking anything for a long time. I can see why this is popular with people.

Another game I was interested in trying was Spyfall 2. It sounded like a great hidden info game. It was great fun. A location is randomly chosen and everyone gets a card that represents this location except... one person gets a spy card. People ask a question to one other person that generally relates to the location. Trying to deduce if that person is actually at this location or the spy. I found it very difficult being the spy. You really had to pay attention to what is being asked, without being to obvious about it. It was a fun game and produced many laughs in the group.

We went back to my fiend's house and played a game of Tsuro before calling it a night. I've never played this before and really enjoyed it. Another game I've been interested in trying and glad I did. I don't think it'll change it's position on my wishlist, but I did enjoy it.

Starting off Day 2, one of the guys grabbed Scuttle! from the Play and Win shelves. We wanted something quick while we waited for others to arrive at the hall. I'll give it credit for being short and fast. The fun factor for me was a little lacking. You are a pirate trying to accumulate 21 points worth of treasure. There's a lot of take that in the game. There were three of us playing and two of us ended the game with no points. Hmmm... Not sure I like not even having a chance. I won't be pursuing this one.

I was able to play another game that I wanted to check out. I played two games of Inis. What a beautiful game. I love how the area pieces fit together. The twist on the card drafting mechanic is nice. You add the cards you kept from the last pass into the group of cards then pull out the number of cards you are supposed to keep. This allows you to completely change your strategy in the middle of the draft if you want. I also like the fact that there are multiple paths to victory. Now, I was terrible at this game but really enjoyed both plays. I'd gladly play this game any time somebody asked. This game went on my wishlist immediately.

It was not time for us to play our annual game of Battlestar Galactica. We've played this game every year at Geekway with the same group of people. Two of the people taught us the first year we were at Geekway and we've gotten together for a memorable experience every other year. This year was no exception. Late in the game, we had enough distance to make one more jump to win the game. Somehow, I had become the Admiral and the President. Talk about pressure! The player to my right was obviously a Cylon but had not revealed himself yet. He handed me his crisis card because the Admiral had to choose. I had to choose what resources to lose. I decided to lose population because we had the most of that (4). I completely forgot about the fact that to jump early, we ran the risk of losing 3 population. If I had not done that, we could have safely jumped one more time and win the game. Instead I doomed us to failure. I had to hand my head in shame.

A couple guys in my group wanted me to try out a game they discovered called The End is Nigh. We played it three player. You are people hiding out in the bunker and interviewing characters to decide if you want to let them into the bunker or not. You want to keep out the two cultist and let in the "regular" people. Now, on top of that there may be a person in your group that is a fanatic and wants to let in cultists. If even one gets in, the civilians lose and the fanatic wins. With three people you get to do more interviewing and can get some useful info. The game was ok and I enjoyed it.
I later played it as a four player game and didn't really like it. There was just too much info not yet deduced and the first round was just a crap shoot. I think I'll have to take a pass on this one.

After supper, we went back to my friends house and played a six player game of Letters from Whitechapel. Unfortunately, Jack was up against three very logical thinking (all IT developers) and two people that play from their gut with intuition. The logical thinkers were able to figure out where Jack might be while the gut players quickly found his location from that. We were able to catch him in night two. I still love this game.

After that serious game, we played a really light game, Ca$h 'n Gun$. I have heard about this game but never had the chance to play. You are bank robbers trying to divide up the loot. How you decide is to point foam guns at each other trying to get them to run or shoot them so they can't get any of the loot. If you have them pointed at you, you have to decide... do I run or do I take the chance that they aren't going to shoot me?
This was the highlight of my whole trip. I had so much fun, laughing to the point of tears and pointing at everyone else. I immediately bought it and can't wait to play it with my gaming group and with my family.

I have wanted to play Five Tribes for a couple years now. I finally got a chance to try it out and was not disappointed. I was a little worried that my anticipation to play the game was going to exceed the fun. I like the mancala type movement and using that to choose the action you take. The Djinn's can help you reach certain goals and grab points as well. It was a great game and moved up on my wishlist. Can't wait to try it again.

It was up to me and a friend to choose what we played next. We were searching around the library when I saw Tobago on the shelf. I quickly explained the game to her and decided to give it a go. I own this game and was the defacto rules teacher. I love the way this game has you build the treasure map. Everytime somebody adds a section to the map, it must reduce the number of possible places the treasure could be. It was a hit with everyone else. I need to get this out at a game night at my house. I kinda forgot about it.

The group was getting together a game of Good Cop Bad Cop. It was a game some of them had played before and wanted to get a group going. I didn't really get what I was doing at first but caught on by the second game and had a good time playing. You try to deduce who is on your team (crooked or honest) and work with your team members to try and eliminate the Agent (honest team) or Kingpin (crooked team). We had a good time. Another game I enjoyed and would probably play again but don't plan on purchasing.

A couple of the guys wanted to introduce me to Carcassonne: Star Wars. It's Carc with a Star Wars theme thrown on. Instead of roads you are using trade routes and instead of cities you have asteroid fields. Those work pretty much the same. Instead of Cloisters you have planets. The planets can be contested and a battle ensues. So, even tho you have control of a planet you could lose it before it gets completed. Not sure if I like that. Also, when trade routes or asteroid fields come together with different "owners", a battle ensues. Somebody is going to lose out instead of sharing the points. That I didn't mind at all.
Now all that being said, I did enjoy playing it but I don't think I'll run out and buy it. If I find a good deal I may pick it up.

One of the guys had Mystic Vale on his must play list. He wanted to find out how this games works and if it was fun. I told him I'd try it out with him. We were a little rushed because we had a group dinner date so we mostly just learned as we played. Since it was just the two of us, it worked pretty good. It was an interesting twist on a deck building game. You never gain new cards in your deck but you alter the cards that are in your deck to make them better.
I wasn't sure how I felt about this game. It was fun, i didn't really know what I was doing. I would absolutely play it again. I'd like to play it again to decide how I felt about it. I didn't dislike it but it didn't really grab me. It needs another go.

The last game of Geekway was Terror in Meeple City. I remember playing this at my first Geekway, so it was kinda funny to play it again a few years later. We had a great time destroying the city and it was a good way to wrap up another fun and GREAT Geekway.

Have a great week everyone!
