Neat little set of Lord of the Rings checkers. No pics on BGG yet.

The board has the map background.

Pieces are rings. Missing 4 gold and 1 silver.

I didn't really buy to play so no problem (wouldn't turn down some replacements though). I just thought the rings were cool and could be used somewhere else.

There are lots of regional checkers rules that are distinct from American/English checkers, and a number of these can be played with an American/English checkers set, such as Russian Checkers, Czech Checkers, Thai Checkers, Brazilian Checkers, Portuguese Checkers, and Italian Checkers. (There are separate BGG entries for most of these checkers versions.)

There are also variants of American/English checkers, e.g. Anti-Checkers, One Way Checkers, Parachute Checkers, etc. These variants (and the regional variants above) are usefully summarized at the checkers rules page of Brainking.com.

Blergh. So many abstract strategy games I'd rather play.

Poll
Am I ridiculous for bothering to mark checkers as "owned" on BGG?
Your Answer   Vote Percent Vote Count
Yes it's idiotic, everyone has a copy of Snakes and Ladders in their house somewhere, that doesn't mean you should boast about it - BGG is about "hobby" games, if everyone did this the site would be less helpful because it would show crappy games as being hugely more popular than the kind of modern games we're curious about, WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME

No, you are merely being thorough good sir

This game is just far to simplistic. Even as a fairly young child I liked chess a lot better. I played this 1 time in 2016.

Big ol' jar of checkers, chess, meeples, timers, etc. $5. I might have messed up an artsy display because next to it were two smaller jars of marbles and a medium jar full of monopoly houses etc.

Rejected:
Ninjago and Lego Pirate game - the store won't let you check completeness
Rummikub - already have
Gossip Girl: The Game - why is this a thing.

Edit: here is everything laid out:

Looks like 2 partial chess sets, 3 partial checker sets, a whole lot of random pieces, and a timer.

Wondering if I should go back for the monopoly house jar. Yes/no?

Lord of the Rings Checkers / Tic Tac Toe

$2.99 at GW (complete).

I figured I would pick this up just for the 24 Rings of Power!

This way I have one for every finger (and every toe).

Speaking of appendages, I also picked up the following item for $2.99 (the box was opened but all the contents were still nicely stored in their individual baggies):

Nippon Edition Gosei Great Megazord

I never really cared for Power Rangers, but this looked too cool to pass up (plus, this item goes for quite a bit apparently, if I ever was to want to flip it online).

Perhaps the most underrated old strategy game that's still clinging to life in today's world. Elegantly simple, yet deep enough to provide a lifelong challenge for most people.

And I'm talking about the 8x8 English/American game. These days there's a whole family of checkers games to choose from.

I taught this to my daughter a few years ago (she would have been 5 or 6 I think). I explained how to move, how to capture, the fact you have to capture, kings. I think we had made a few move each when she asked "how do you win?"

I know what you are thinking... "Checkers? Checkers!? Come on man!"
We were returning from my younger daughter's soccer game and spotted a GW, so we (actually I made an executive decision) turned in. My older daughter went in with me to help hunt. Did see Coda, but left it behind. The last game we come to is checkers so I turn to leave and my daughter says, "I want to get this."

I told her we have checkers at home. She tells me her teacher is doing "game hour" on Fridays and needs games for the class to play. So we get checkers to donate to the school.

How come my middle school never did game hour on Fridays? Clearly I went to the wrong school.

Edit: Forgot the price - $2

They explained everything in detail and at great length. After they finished I sat, despondent, contemplating a bleak and empty future. "I’m glad you’re depressed" said one. "It means you’ve understood the situation.”

Little Fish the Elder's school has this reward system where a student receives a 'doujou point' for good behaviour/academic results/something else. When they receive a certain number of points they can choose a small reward from the 'prize locker'. The first couple of times he got this he picked books, but the last one her chose a small box with a set of Checkers. We set it up the other night,, I explained the rules and we played a few games. As I played I tried to explain what move I was making, why I was making it and what I was planning for upcoming turns.

He got really frustrated when he lost by pretty big margins which was surprising as he's usually pretty good about this sort of thing. Maybe it was the fact it was 'his' game that caused him grief. Anyway, we teamed up and played his aunt and mother and we got a good win in which cheered him up. I was quite happy he chose a game as his prize.

Apart from the usual lunchtime gaming where Parade was the game of the week I managed to get away on Saturday afternoon/evening for a session at the local boardgames café (called 'Guild' in what passes for Canberra's CBD). The original concept was that four of us would meet and stay there for the 'long haul'. As it turn out one was ill and another had to leave early.

While I was waiting for the other myself and my regular wargames opponent played Splendor from the games library at Guild. This was my first play and I rather enjoyed it as an engaging little filler. When the three of us were assembled we cracked out Spartacus: A Game of Blood & Treachery and had a rather fun three way game. The game itself is a bit dice/luck heavy but is quite fun. In the end we had a three way tie for first that was settled in the arena. My best gladiator was killed by a couple of poor heal rolls (one by a specialist apothecary) so I lost but all players seemed to enjoy it which was good. To change it up we played
which went well and was very close.

After that one chum left and I played more Splendor with the other chap as we ordered and ate dinner. When the plates were cleared away we played a couple of two player games of Scythe which were more about building one's engine than conflict. I got flogged in both games but enjoyed them. We finished with Hyperborea which was a bit of fun. the bag-seeding/action nomination mechanisms worked quite well.

So, not a bad week for gaming.

How ridiculous that this actually has a BGG listing!

Anyway, don't look at the stock pic. This is what you get:

AND, it's also Shotglass Chess!

From the appropriately named company iPartyHard (strange that Steve Jobs hadn't already locked that name up).

It's big and heavy. Plan accordingly.

You want it.
