Next time they should do something like this ...

BTW, "bigger is better" fits to XiangQi in comparison to Chess, too. The same number of pieces (32) on 90 intead of 64 positions! Bigger board = less crowdy = "better" game, at least in this case, at least IMHO.

Edit: And here, another one in "live action":

Lines and icons on the pieces are hand-cut and filled with oilpaint. Coloured with the same. Took me a long, long time because of the hard material. The board (with the other sides of the pieces) made it to the "representative image" ...

The BGG entry for this game includes a link for rules.

One should most definitely purchase a set for this game.

This is said to be the most popular board game in the world , and although I would wonder if Go might not be a stronger contender for that title this game is certainly the most played game of the Chess family. That says itall perhaps.

This is Xiang Qi, also known as Chinese Chess. Nice heavy wooden board that folds in half with solid plastic pieces.
Sweetener: a paperback book suitable for beginners and more advanced players called Chinese Chess by H.T. Lau.
Will pay first $9 shipping anywhere. Note to those outside the U.S.: the weight of this is probably not going to make it worth your while for shipping. In the U.S., it can fit in a flat rate priority box for $9.

The palace sections and the river are nice features for artistic design.

On the back you could do any ancient chinese pic, dragons, elephants (as it is called "elephant chess-game" or chinese characters ...

Pieces can be easily done - all you need is circles with either the chinese characters on them or icons easily recognizable for western people - elephant, cannon, chariot and so on.

Or both on the two sides ...

Greatest game ever, BTW ...!

With Shogi and FIDE Chess this one completes the big three.

Another one that due to unique checker pieces means a commercial set is worthwhile.

My all-time-favourite. Always around #300. Sometimes 299, sometimes 302.

Considering all the new games showing up "better" then this in the last years, there must be the same amount of games sinking below that.

This is 1000 years old and doesn`t care.

It is the best "Chess" of all, IMO. Period.

Bigger, better, faster, more. Cannons, elephants, a "deadly view".

1000 years not changed.

1 billion people playing this.

Here's a "public domain" design, just to shake things up. Again, don't have experience playing either one of these, but from reading the descriptions it seems like a fit.

An authentic copy of XiangQi purchased (very cheaply) from a street vendor in Suzhou, China. The game is small, very portable, written entirely in Chinese, has round bamboo playing pieces and a plastic play mat (which is very common). This would be a good starter game to judge interest with. I've never played this game, but, don't expect really high production values.

I'll also throw in:

The Davinci/Mayfair version of Werewolf (like new condition)

and,

the Uberplay card game, Manga Manga (new in shrink)

and,

the Uberplay card game, Oh, Pharaoh! (new in shrink)

Edit: I will ship to the US and Canada free of charge. For international shipping over $12, I will request additional payment via paypal.

Obvious on the one hand – no secrets and clear moves of the parts because of known reasons (the river as a frontier, the palace as a kind of prison, the cannon with its “platform”) – but strange to our culture on the other hand – pieces with their chinese visual script scarcely anybody can decipher …

Open, but strange; seemingly fast and rather aggressive, but deep and more taoist at a second glance – quite similar to Marcel Duchamp - the perfect fit.

Beware of my double cannon and in a conflict with me, never look straight in my eyes!

The only game in which I don`t miss anything: The "Chinese chess".

Bigger than chess (90 instead of 64 positions).

Faster in the beginning - and in the end. I`m a slow gamer, but I hate this phalanx of chess-pawns ever since. Here, after two or three moves you are right in the battle, that lasts until the end. Almost never you will find an agonizing endgame with only a couple of pieces running around the board (one advantage of the "realistic" fortress the general=king doesn`t leave) ...

Cool things like the cannon capturing "jumping" over one other piece or the "deathly view" from the general.

Deep strategy; the rules did not change for at least 1,000 years and for a good reason - they are perfect.

Cheap to buy and improve by yourself with a nice wooden board or pictorial pieces, if you have problems with the chinese characters.

The only flaw is the literature I miss in German or at least English - in Chinese you can have a whole library about this.

Chinese Chess. Not the version pictured, my copy is a little unusual in that instead of Chinese characters on the pieces, there are modern military equipment like helicopters and jeeps. Trust me, if you don't speak Chinese this makes it a lot easier to learn how to play.

Also, Travel Blokus, opened but in great shape.

I'll pay the first $10 shipping anywhere.

Central Cannon

It doesn`t matter, which one And there are different systems for notation.

I guess, it`s the most common first move.

(For people not familiar with XiangQi: The cannons are the four pieces (two of each player) in the third / eigth row - see them? Now put it in the central column, at the top of the "palace", which is the coloured square ... since a cannon captures an opponent`s piece "jumping over" exactly one other pice (imagine a catapult "shooting"), it threatens at once the central soldier of the other player, which is not guarded and usually the most important soldier, so: oh - oh)

This one starts faster than Chess, that`s for sure!

BTW, here are fine notated sessions, with the "openings" mentioned in an extra-column:

It was one of the first sessions with my son, then 8 years old. We had played "just for fun" several times, discussing the moves, when he required a serious game without so much talking. In fact he wanted to beat me "real", that was obvious. So we started on my home-made board with icons on the back of the characters:

I was quite a bit inattentive, and my son needed a lot of thinking time, but for me it was nice to see him working so wholeheartedly on his triumph, yet I was sure neither to let him win easily, nor that he was a true danger.

I realized he played surprisingly good, and I had to labor a lot to escape his attacks. Then, after thinking for about ten minutes, he said, not even looking at me: "You`ve lost." I couldn`t see his point and had made my own plans in the last ten minutes. He made his move with one of his cannons, a move I had foreseen, and I made my move instantly. He still not looked at me, saying: "Okay ..., I said, you`ve lost." I stared at the battlefield. He explained me his next move and my possible reactions and why they didn`t make any sense, because of his doubled cannon and the "deadly view" of his general, then possible because of his next move ...

My son showed me my hubris - and the limits of "education".

I`ve lost and was happy. People with children understand why, others possibly not.
