Xiangqi is an interesting one. It has most of the same moving pieces as Shatranj, but with the added cannon pieces. This is a piece that moves in a very unique fashion in that is can only capture by jumping another piece.

Also the elephant which moves only 2 spaces diagonal and is restricted to half of the board.

Also another interesting feature of this game is the King and his counselors are all confined to the fortress, a small 9 space area.
The counselors move just like Shatranj or Makruk, just that they are stuck in the small space.

Another thing is that the generals cannot face each other.

Well, lots of things to make this one unique and interesting. I enjoy this one occasionally.

No gaming while in China, but yesterday we just visted my mother in law's old apartment while she was growing up. The plus was that it as really close to the world famous West Lake. The minus...really really small.

The view from the street. Conveniently, its the brown building. There is a restaurant on the ground floor. The apartment is now technically empty, (a few of the dishwashers let us upstairs) but a few of the cooks are now squatting the space, which is why my interior shots were fairly hurried and not too detailed, out of respect to the guys living there.

Here's a view of their north window from the little alley between buildings

The view out the second window (also showing you the location where I took the photo looking north). My mother in law used to climb out onto that roof and grow plants there as a kid.

From that same position right next to the second window, here is the view towards the north. You can see the north wall if you peek past the curtain on the right side. The kitchen (and restroom facilities) were downstairs in a communal setting.

And this place housed 8 (eight) people - the folks on the left of the photo, great-grandma, her husband, great-great ma and pa, with my mother in law and her brother sitting on their laps, and my mom in law's two older sisters sitting on the floor. (The woman to the left, her child in arms, and the two children sitting on the floor to the left are great grandma's brother's family, but he was out on assignment at the time)

Eclectic. This has been long missing from my collection. Played this ages ago in a computer game and found it an interesting diversion from chess. Most importantly, I was missing a game starting with X for which I can buy a micro badge, as I have at least one for each letter of the alphabet. So in essence, a completionistic purchase after all.

I happen to be in Shanghai and came across this set for $30, handpainted in a nice wood case. I'd seen these in EBay in the past but shipping was too much. I got the one with the figures shown in the photo. They're pretty cool looking resin figures with a bunch of monkey king dudes on one side and evil witches on the other. Eclectic.

Well, the astute among you will have noticed that we don't, technically speaking, own this game. However, what I do own is a reasonably well-appointed woodworking shop in my garage. It's fair to say that by November or December of this year, we will own it. Maybe not a NICE copy, but a reasonably-priced one.

Update 12/11/16-

We did not actually own this game when we made the list, as noted above. Brad made a beautiful set himself. Nice, thick wooden pieces with hand-painted icons. A thick felt board. All just in time for the end of the year and one play... in which Jen declared it "too much like regular chess" to ever want to play it again! cry To be fair, she did warn Brad, and he did go into this knowing she is terrible at abstract strategy in general, and chess in particular. And it isn't that she hated it-- just that as abstract strategy goes, she would much rather play The Duke or Hive. But if there is a choice between this and traditional chess, she probably would pick this one; the pieces move in an interesting way, and there is at least a (very) small chance that she might surprise Brad and win!

Bought the version in the pic sometime in the 90's. Heavy, doublesided (western/chinese) bakelite pieces and a foldable wooden board. The pieces can be stored inside the folded board.

Having been three times to China, this game is played everywhere in public places: usually with a big crowd of spectators, all suggesting possible moves and many times moving the pieces for the players! So I had to learn the rules in order to be able to follow, and it's a fun game. More fun to play than chess, probably since there's less prestige when nobody (me and my friends at least) really knows what they're doing.

Spiel 2015 is over. We're all home safe and sound, happy for the dozens of new games we picked up.

Even though I had tons of bags filled to the brim, wy wife didn't ask me how many games I bought, only if I've had fun. heart

I'm still unpacking my bags, but we've already played Riff Raff, Ghost Blitz, Rhino Hero and Au Backe. Dying to play a full game of Patchwork.

In order to fit all the new games, I'm looking through my collection and have already sorted out 28 games that I hope to get rid of (mostly small games though...not at all the same size as the new bad-boys).

See a list of just the games here: My Essen 2015 - game by game

Biblios 16€
Rhino Hero 6.5€
Riff Raff 38€
Grizzled 0€ (gift)
Qwixx papers + custom dice 3.5€
Pick-a-Pig 3€

Games traded that I got:
Dominion: Seaside
Dungeon Fighter

Tsuro
Krakow 1325 (sold for 10€ straight away)

Games sold:
Starcraft 75€ (my friend's game)
Fjords 30€

Games traded away:

Boss Monster: The Dungeon Building Card Game
Flash Point: Fire Rescue
Onirim
Panic Station
Smash up

So that's it, 32 games IN and 11 games OUT in total.

Hope you enjoyed reading about my trip to Essen - feel free to comment and ask me about certain games!

See you all at Spiel 2017!

I don't profess to be anything but a total novice with this Chinese member of the chess family. Compared to western chess, however, it has so much more the feel of a knife fight in a phone booth. When comparing it to the Japanese game, Shogi, even more so.

Solo - Plays are Vs Freeware - but only the Weakest AI. Really, really bad at Chess games.

Group - Gamer #2 played Chess in the family as a child, so could be interested in this version.

This is one of those games which may be unplayed, but unlikely to ever be removed.

Game Summary and Significance:
There are few games whose history is so contentious as that of xiangqi. Depending on what source you have read, xiangqi either found its roots in the Indian game chaturanga, or in the even more ancient Chinese game luibo. Some sources even say it was luibo that influenced both the Indian and Persian games mentioned already here on this list and thus any perceived influence of those games on xiangqi are false, with all of these games being influenced from luibo, the godfather of many early games. Whether or not this is true is lost to history. Even the rules to luibo have been forgotten.

What we do know is that even with wide geographic differences, there are commonalities to all of these "chess" games. Where they came from may be obscure, but what we do know is that one game had a great influence on all chess games and especially Western chess, which would become the standard by the 15th and 16th centuries. Xiangqi may of have been that game.

Xiangqi (translation: "elephant chess") is played on the intersections of a grid and not on the squares. Like any chess game, each player has a set of pieces, with each piece having its own movement properties. The goal is familiar: capture the opponent's king. What sets xiangqi apart is the river that sits in the middle of the board and prevents some movement, and the peculiar rule that prevents the two kings (or "generals") from "seeing" each other, and the "palace" where the general and his advisors must stay. Otherwise, each of the pieces have rules peculiar enough that they easily set themselves apart from the movement rules known in Western chess, but they are still as simple to execute, intriguing to consider, and difficult to master.

Xiangqi is still a massively popular game in China and in other parts of the Eastern world. It deserves to be popular in the West as it is no mere chess variant (Western chess came hundreds of years after). Xiangqi is a high-water-mark chess game.

Fun fact: like most early chess games, xiangqi was not played on a checkered board. Eventually the checkered board was introduced and the pieces were actually played in the squares. There is no certainty to when and why xiangqi moved its pieces to the intersections.

Do I Own It?
I do. I was fortunate enough to come across a copy of it at a thrift store years ago and was immediately hooked into the nature of this game. Copies are easy to come by cheap in your local Chinatown shop or off the internet.

A copy of Chinese chess with the large wood disks and paper board for $1 (or maybe half price at $.50). The paper map isn't in the best of shape but the pieces are kinda cool if nothing else. Hmm I think it was $.50 but who knows, I already took the trash out. hehe
