I've got a couple more turns left in my solo run through of scenraio 5 'From the Rappahannock to Bull Run'. Jackson has been running rings around the Union and wrecking the railway but they managed to bottle him up just south of Fairfax Courthouse. Or so they thought. Jackson punched his was out and is now wriggling around the Union forces like a huge bearded fish.

I'm still deciding whether I want to commit to a long campaign on Vassal. I like the system but I've not quite talked myself into it yet.

I'm interested in this series so I picked up SJW. I was pretty underwhelmed by the initial 3 turn scenario so I set up the 7-turn scenario 5 'From The Rappahannock to Bull Run', in which Jackson does a big flank march and smashes up some railway stations.

It is a lot more interesting (so far) and I do like the system (so far), insofar as manoeuvre is concerned. But, I'm pretty underwhelmed by the set of scenarios. I can't really do 2 mappers so I'll not be able to play the really big scenarios with the advanced rules until some future date or on Vassal. I'd really like a few more 1 map scenarios with a decent number of turns and units.

I don't know if other games in the series would give me what I'm looking for...

and I continued our play of this, Scenario 2 - Lee vs Pope, last night. We have had a longish unintended break due to family commitments, tiredness and busy schedules etc...

Anyway, last night we finally got back to it and I remembered how much I am really growing to love this game. I like the scale a lot. The map is beautiful. The short, sharp action phases mean there is very little downtime for either player (unless, like me you continually lose initiative die rolls shake). We went through to the end of the first day and about a third of the next one. This scenario is four days long.

Steve (the boys in grey) continued to try and pound his way straight through the middle towards Brandy Station. However, we both learnt that frontal attacks are likely to be bloodily repulsed in this game (as in the historical era it represents). Once again my heroic boys in Stevens' Division from Reno's IX corps managed to hold off almost all of Longstreet's CSA Corps. It was actually an amazing against the odds result caused by a couple of awful die rolls by Steve.

Meanwhile, my II Corps under Banks with Pope in attendance has managed to concentrate in front of Brandy Station, behind Jonas Run. This has been very encouraging for me. Jackson's Confederate Corps are slowly advancing about three miles away as Sigel's Union I Corps does it's best to march through Culpepper and come round to reinforce Banks.

I also have McDowell's very large II Corps trying to move east to interfere with Jackson's movements.

All in all the pendulum seems to be swinging my way, although Stuart's rebel cavalry are through my lines and will no doubt start burning as many railroad stations as they can.

Steve and I started playing Scenario 2: Lee vs. Pope. This is a hypothetical scenario that shows what might have happened if Lee had managed to get organised in time to attack Pope on August 18th, 1862, instead of when he actually did a couple of days later.

The bulk of the Union force are deployed way too far West, away from the vital railroad which was the Confederate objective and where all the VP hexes are. In this, the Union (me this time) has to try and delay the Confederates as they advance across the Rapidan and march Sigel's I Corps and McDowell's III Corps as quickly as possible to intercept them.

We soon found out this game goes a lot slower when the unit count is increased. More units = more activations of course, so turns take a fair bit longer. We managed to get about halfway through turn one.

Ferrero and Stevens' divisions of the Union IX Corps (Reno) did a great job delaying, indeed repelling, Longstreet's opening attacks. Ferrero was eventually forced back but Stevens managed to more or less hold his ground. Jackson managed to make a bit more progress, helped by Stuart's rebel cavalry who made it halfway to Brandy Station. Buford was hustled out of the way and went reeling back.

Confederate casualties were fairly heavy and fatigue soon set in but these initial local successes were not really capitalised on by the Union army. All the sacrifices did not help change the strategic situation too much as Sigel and McDowell both made frustratingly slow progress eastwards. Pope's forces are still left a bit fresher having won far fewer initiative rolls but have a lot of marching to do before they interpose themselves between Lee and the all important railroad.

Steve and I continue what is turning out to be a big year of ACW games for us. Outside of this list we have completed a game of The U.S. Civil War at his house. As well as everything else that followed on from our epic, year long play of The Three Days of Gettysburg (third edition)

I have started learning the GCACW system and there is obviously no better place to start than the first one. Last night, after a rules session last week, we got into it.

The first thing to say is that we could probably have just sat down and played it. These rules are extremely well written and, for warmers like us, not very complicated. We started with the three turn introductory scenario: Cedar Mountain.

Here is the situation after turn one. I am the CSA and Steve is the USA (this was randomly decided).

The Union cavalry guarding the fords over Robertson's River has been seen off. Gregg and Lawton's Confederate brigades have been sent to guard Jackson's left flank; unnecessarily as it happens - Buford's union cavalry has moved off to the north east. Steve has moved a line of forces in front of Culpepper which is the main Victory location.

Here is the situation about four or five activations into turn two when we finished.

Winder's CSA division moved north east along the south bank of the Rapidan then crossed at Somerville Ford. Jackson attacked the Union Force 9 which turned out to be smaller than expected and was sent reeling back. Ewell came up alongside Jackson and A.P. Hill.

Meanwhile Sigel's Union Corps is approaching Culpepper. Ricketts large Division is marching, very slowly, down the road to concentrate at the same place.

We are liking this game. In our limited experience of combat in this system we have realised it's dependence on "the fortune of war" or luck. This is probably a good way to simulate operational ACW warfare. These guys were still fighting Napoleonic doctrine using almost modern weaponry. The outcome was always in doubt; and so it is here. The emphasis is on delivering your force to the point of resolution. This is well explained in the excellent designers notes.

I, for one, am looking forward to exploring this system in depth.

Solo play

Of all the strange things that wargamers do--clipping counters, purchase games and not play them, read 40 page rulebooks--the ritual of playing solo must be the strangest of all. Don't get me wrong, I do this myself and it's a worthwhile and relaxing exercise, but, come on, it is kinda weird, right? I've heard an argument that it's like playing video/computer games, which is a solo activity as well, and people don't think it's weird to play video games so why should playing boardgames be viewed differently? Well, cause it can be argued that it's' analogous to talking to yourself. (Kind of like what I'm doing with this "blog".)

So why do it?

• As some have pointed out, some people enjoy playing wargames because it gives them an insight into a particular battle or campaign. The great designs certainly do this and this reason alone "justifies" solo play.
• Some games are just too unwieldy to play with others (I'm thinking monster and/or ultra-complex games) unless you have as dedicated an opponent as yourself--lucky you--so a great alternative is to play solo.
• Also, opponents can be hard to come by. Wargamers are few and far between and solo may be the only way to get games to the table. (Although, Vassal seems to mitigate this for many.)

So, yeah, playing solo: Kinda weird but necessary.

The GCACW maps are superb, although there has been some controversy over the glossiness of the MMP versions; my preference is the earlier Nat style but I still like the later ones. This is the first one, another brilliant Charles Kibler effort.

The maps sometimes seem a bit busy, particularly where there are large numbers of units, but it's never been a problem for play for me.
