The man, the myth, the legend. Winner of two "Session Report of the Year" awards, this reporter's style is unlike any other. Six years later, I'm sure his son is still kicking his butt in boardgames...and isn't that what all us gamer parents want to have happen? Excellent read!

8 plays of 8 distinct games with 6 games New to Me
New to Me

The Week in Review:

It began on Wednesday, with me hurrying home after Latin class to play a game with J. for the first time in ages. Naturally it was A Feast for Odin Both of us were a bit rusty. We have been playing with our own variant of getting 3 and picking 1 of the starting occupations. It allows for more choice. This time I decided to get the one that makes emigration cost 2 less.

J. was slow in getting his homeboard filled and though he got a few animals, there was no mercy as I scored 82 points from emigrations and 125 in total, though shawed off a few points for not filling my homeboard.

On the Friday we went to Djengis Con. We were the first to arrive and had booked a spot on the dinner-prep-team. It was great because it meant no more chores for the rest of the weekend.

In the evening I sat down to play High Frontier (3rd edition) with Morten and JH. As Morten mentioned JH has played the earlier versions a lot. I have played the game a great deal solo and a few times with V., so knew a lot more than Morten.

That said, I kept making errors in calculation, forgetting the mass of the rocket would limit my forward movement. Still, since it was a learning game, we all took things easy and allowed for moves to be altered or taken back, when small adjustments could amend things otherwise gone horribly wrong.

The game reminded me why I love it so much. It has exploration, it has figuring things out and making them succeed, it has failure and triumph. Hopefully we will be playing in Aarhus again soon.

Edit May 6th:

V. had been playing Islebound and Aeon's End on a table close by. She had enjoyed herself. Her comments on Islebound were that it would probably be much better with 4, but she was also hopeful that it could be played with 4. Good thing, since it was our copy she played on, one I bought just for the Con.

On Saturday I was to play American Megafauna with Morten, JH and a 4th joined us at the table on the day. As Morten mentioned, I was all in on the first mutation card that came up. This gave me a few advantages in the early game that carried into the mid-game. In the process I almost wiped out A. in the north.

Over the course of the game I managed to further develop, thanks to a few events that gave us all DNA points to adapt. By the end it was a clear, but also a slim win. I was vulnerable to further shifts in temperature, as I was living in the north (Greenland and surroundings) with little room to move about.

A classic Phil Eklund experience, I loved it. Plus, as Morten mentioned, I think it was the game that brought us together in the first place.

V. was playing Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure at the same time and had a really good time. She was a bit disappointed though that you did not have to make a clank noise when playing the game. Before and after she was adamant she had heard it used in the Man vs Meeple video we had watched.

After lunch V. was up for a 4 player game of Great Western Trail. This game we have been enjoying since playing it at Aarhus Boardgame Festival in March. She was happy to play it with 4 and said it made the game better, while still good at 2.

I had signed up for a buffet of smaller games, thinking it would be a nice change. It ended up taxing me more than the previous games, having to learn 3 games in 3 hours.

Up first was Kanagawa. It is a nice, relaxing game with us painting landscapes with different seasons, buildings, people and animals. I won with the final round, as I painted a tile, that allowed me to snowball 3 extra scoring tiles.

Next was Kodama: The Tree Spirits, another great looking game with a nice theme. Growing your tree, trying to attract spirits and continually scoring. The placement of the growth was a bit difficult to manage with the cards sliding and no idea of what would be good. We were minded to cut it short half-way through, but we stuck with it and it grew on us as we played. No need to play again though.

Finally we played Not Alone. 3 of us stuck in space with a creature hunting us. The game went long and was rather uninteresting. We played it to the end and we won the game against the creature player, but another I don't need to play.

That said, those were some interesting games and I am happy to have played them and thankful for the introductions.

In the evening I sat down with G. and B. to introduce and play The Colonists. Ever since Morten played it and commented on it being long and dull (or something to that effect), I have felt it might better go on the trade pile. Since there was interest in the game for the Con, I decided to give it a go.

We took it nice and slow setting up (punching out) and doing the rules. Then began playing the game, learning as we went along. I went into Embassies, B. into getting Colonists and G. into a bit of everything. Neither of us had any idea about what was coming nor what would score, so it was very much a learning game. Especially in terms of placing new tiles. Some of them were horrible.

It was also a fun game, right up my alley where I enjoyed the city-building aspect and working out how to jump around, building things up and I would really like to add the later eras (we played just 2) to get to the meatier buildings.

The only negative aspect is the length of the game that makes it a few times a year game most likely.

After this I went to bed. V. had already gone after playing a few games of Betrayal at House on the Hill. She played it at our first DC 2 years ago and enjoyed herself even more this time round.

On the Sunday the weekend was getting to us, despite decent sleep and good provisions. The number of new games is taxing.

I had signed us up for Rococo, thinking it would be a nice, easy end to the weekend. It was, at least in terms of theme. Creating dresses for the French court, sponsoring fireworks and retiring unwanted masters.

It was a 5 player game, so very chaotic at times, though with open stocks for each, it was somewhat predictable in terms of what people might potentially be able to do in terms of creating dresses. However, for the rest of the game it was not.

I really enjoyed the deck-management aspect of choosing 3 of your cards and playing them for the round. It made it very interesting with the knowledge that you might get a great round now, but then next round it might be less so, so there was also a balance act, but it did not leave you at the luck of the draw.

This was also the first and only game that V. and I played together. We both enjoyed it greatly. So much so, that it has been acquired...

A great way to end the Con and then we sat out to clear the auction table for games. We did not manage to get all off-loaded, but that was ok. We did sell or trade a few, but did end up taking more games home than we brought.

The Week Ahead:

Busy week with me beginning a new job as student assistant at a research project Monday, a seminar on Tuesday and preparing for classes at the same time. Wednesday I had classes, but also had to prepare for meetings later in the week. Thursday gaming with J. and Friday meetings and a visit from my mentee.

Writing this it is Saturday and I hope V. will play The Colonists with me. E. is at work since 5 am (serving customers at the local bakery) and M. is leaving in an hour (washer at a cafe), so just the 2 of us.

Have a great weekend!

I have read somewhere the board described as a tangled birds nest of insanity.

I am trying to learn the game for the first time. NASA managed to get a ship out into space, but it ran out of fuel somewhere near Venus. Is it possible to refuel ships that are floating helplessly in space? I don't know. I guess this counts as a loss then.

We must move forward, not backward, upward, not forward, and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!
Avatar

It's felt like ages since I last played this (edit: over a year), my PBF game has slowed to a crawl, and there's been a ton of activity since the 3rd edition has (finally) arrived, so it was time to pull out my trusty old 2nd edition copy.

I went with simple auction rules (2WT for any card + supports or 1WT for a single blind draw from the bottom), and no politics, to keep things relatively straightforward and uncomplicated. On top of that I used 2WT Income actions, a 4WT flat rate for Free Marketing, and the Colonization rule allowing factories to produce multiple products.
-----------

PRC got the first jump on points with a sailing trip to the comet Phaethon, while putting together the pieces of a lightweight, efficient rocket system.

NASA got a few nice compatible parts early on, then painstakingly used good timing and some good luck to put together a near-perfect 13-thrust megadoomer rocket that could go pretty much anywhere and do anything(DeLaval+Orion+EGDL+BFS!).

Shimizu cobbled together whatever random pieces they could get, but they lacked any real direction for the early part of the game and were desperately in need of a pulsed ┤├ generator.

NASA effortlessly grabbed Luna, then after brief trip back to Earth to pick up a spare radiator, flew out to take over the solar system, starting with the entire Koronis cluster.

PRC stuck with their more traditional approach, and set up a factory on Lutetia, and eventually Shimizu lugged a massive pile of parts out to the Vesta family.

As NASA flew off to Saturn and lit up several moons to claim Tourism and put down a factory, PRC made a last-ditch effort to grab a second factory site and found success on Chaucer. While NASA raised the funds to end the game, Shimizu managed to make a short hop to Unitas to establish their second factory too.

Once NASA had the parts collected it was only a matter of time until they ran away with this one, but the others managed to put up a decent showing as well with a pair of factories each, and both had full matching-letter sets of equipment that could be rebuilt within a few turns to create new factories.

Score Breakdown:

This is my one "must play" game of the Con. I refuse to learn this on my own, so I'm imploring someone (Jeroen?, German Mike?, someone else?) to help teach me and others, this game! The 3rd edition might even be out by late May, so we could give that a go!

I'm imagining that we're going to have a group of 2-4 games of this going, so getting in a game should be a problem.

Fellow Newbs welcome, but must reserve 1 spot for a teacher!

Day/Time: TBD, but maybe Friday morning, first thing?

What an absolutely brilliant map. What a chart for thrust and fuel. Patents! Industrial espionage! Radiation belts! Lagrange points!
