A Regret - I Play a Lot of Mediocre Stuff

Out of 1,500 games played, my average rating is a 5.74, breaking down to:

10 .5%
9 .7%
8 6.1%
7 21.9%
6 32.6%
5 21.7%
4 9.1%
3 5.2%
2 1.9%
1 .2%

That's over 70% games that I would classify as "Ok - Will play if in the right mood", or worse, and only 30% that I would say I'm "Usually willing to play".

There are over twice as many games I'd classify as "Not so good" than "very good"!.

So why even bother playing new games? I logically know there's a bigger chance it'll be an average to below average game than a hit. That thrill of discovering and trying something new is still fun, though! The cult of the new is always so seductive; that fear of missing out on a game that could be one of my favorites is strong, even though chances are a new game will land on the "meh" pile.

Bill is my brother-in-law, and has two young kids (4 & 1). He also runs two restaurants in town and is a very busy man. For Christmas I bought his older son Loopin Chewie and the three of us have had a good time playing that.

I struggled with Bill, mostly because he isn't a gamer, and I wanted the gift to be something he would actually use.

I settled on Crokinole because it is good with kids, can be played 4p for when the little one gets older, and has some depth.

I found a board on ebay in my price range, and the seller had good reviews. I am a bit jealous because Bill now has a much nicer board than I do

Update: I don't really understand the point of bowling. The challenge is to essentially repeat the exact same task under essentially identical circumstances. The only strategy emerges during troubleshooting. Crokinole is kinda like that. If you are that good at the game you'll shoot it to the center time after time. The real fun starts when you have to hit your opponents' pieces. And that's why it's my favorite parlor game.

I really like playing Crokinole. But I see it the same way I see Foosball, as a parlor game, not so much a "board game". I don't think it's fair to compare it to games with intricate mechanics. But I put it on here because I think everyone that's a fan of games such as Pool or shuffleboard should give it a try. It's portable, and it packs all the punch of a shuffleboard game without taking up half your basement.

1) Why you like the listed game

It's a very solidly designed (and BEAUTIFUL to look at), simple flicking game. I'm also the primary "getter" of games in most of my groups, so the things I'm interested in playing, I end up owning even before I get to try them. This one's a bit (meaning a LOT) out of my price range and storage space to ever actually put to good use.

Quote:
2) The game you want to acquire with the gift certificate and why

I would honestly probably PIFF the gift card amount if I won by buying something for someone. If I HAD to spend it on myself, probably Colt Express: Marshal & Prisoners, Medieval Academy, PitchCar Special Long Straights, or Viticulture Essential Edition. Those are probably my top wants right now as I run out of storage space, which is why I'd probably rather gift it to someone via PIFF. Plus, piff is life, piff is love.

3) Your favorite place to get games

PIFF, Math Trades, trades, FLGS, in that order.

4) The last new-to-you game you played and what you thought of it

Gave Geek Out! a whirl last night at game night and it left a really bad taste in my mouth. The other team was SUPER competitive and this wasn't the first game they've "ruined" for me. >_> I just want to play and enjoy the experience, having to win and letting it ruin the experience is just blah to me. =/ We also cracked the shrink on Hamsterrolle and were sad to discover one of the gates on the wheel had come off in shipping. It was enough to offset the balance of the wheel and make the game mostly unplayable. Gonna have to homebrew it to fix it with sandpaper and wood glue before we can give it a proper whirl.

Comments from my profile:

Flick those discs! I think Crokinole is the best dexterity game I've played. The rules are simple, the play is engaging (particularly when playing a 4 player partnership game), and there is skill involved. There isn't a huge learning curve to the game, so it's easy for new players to pick it up and start having fun. I think it's more worthwhile to get a high quality board from Muzzies, Mr. Crokinole or the Hilsinki brothers, than cheaper boards from someone like Mayday games. Yes, this will run you about $200 for a nice board, but it looks nice hanging from a wall and I bet you will get more plays out of Crokinole than many others in your collection. Highly recommended!

---

Plays: 62

Further comments: I haven't played this one in a few years and it makes me really sad. Still one of the better board game investments I've made and is still my favorite dexterity game.

February 2017

February wasn't a bad month. It was almost a game a day in the shortest month of the year. My gamegroup's "Chriscon" helped gets some plays in, and I was able too get some first plays of Star Wars: Rebellion and Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization. I did think Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization was a great new version of the game, and I am glad I have it. I still consider it playing Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization though. Some rule tweaks here and there, mean its a new version/edition, not a new game. One of my favorite games.

At "Chriscon" we had a Poker tournament again. I won my listed favorite game! That doesn't happen most of the time, but it is nice when it happens. Add some plays of another of my "Top 10 Games," The Resistance, and it made a pretty good weekend.

Of course one of my favorite games (and another "Top 10 Games") is Crokinole. With plays at "Chriscon" and the Super Bowl Party, it was by far my most played game this month, again. One of the best game purchases I have ever made...despite the price.

Crokinole is probably my favorite filler, at least until the time it took me and a friend 1h45min to play a game to 100. Quarterfinal at a local con and we were pretty equal skilled so no one scored more than 10 points in the first 15 rounds or so with about 12 of them giving 5 or nothing.

We didn't have as many people as we normally have in the Crokinole tourney, but still a good time. Congrats to Matt for his victory! I played two games. One against Brian who I wiped the floor with (he has beaten me in past years), but then I ran up against Tony (another new attendee) and he smoked me. Even though it was only his 2nd game ever! Nice to meet you Tony and thanks to GP North for the gift card for the winner.

I had a bye in the first round of the Crokinole tournament. Dave and I were supposed to play in the second round, but he was busy enough that he let me move on to round three without playing.

I accidentally met my round three opponent, Tony, by just sitting down to chat with some newcomers. We played a long, seesaw match, with many games scoring just five or ten points. I eventually squeaked out a win.

Later, much asking around eventually turned up the two people who needed to play a match so I could meet the winner. Turns out I'd actually met one of them the day before, Jason, who also ended up winning that round and becoming my next ... and final opponent. Jason schooled me, winning three of the five games we played by rather a lot.

Crokinole is great. I'd need to play a LOT more, I think, to gain any consistency, but even when I'm losing I enjoy it.

Crokinole - On Friday evening, a friend came over and we played a couple of games of Crokinole on my new Mayday Kickstarter board. I had waxed it for the first time earlier in the day. It's not quite where it needs to be yet, but it is a very nice board, for a very affordable price. I won the first match, and he won the second. He was making some really great shots. He knocked 3 of my discs off the board at once. He knocked a couple of my discs off the board and landed in the center hole. I don't know if it was intentional, but it was pretty fun to watch.

Alchemists - After Crokinole, we played a game of Alchemists. This has become one of my favorite games, and I think it's pretty high up on his list, too. I grabbed the discount card in the first round, which then, combined with a shopkeeper, allowed me to pick up the robe of reputation for 1 buck. I had never used the robe before, and wanted to see how I did with it. I probably should have been more aggressive about publishing. I published and debunked a theory about mandrake root twice. The first time was intentional; the second time, I realized I was wrong, but had hedged, so it was fine. But, all that mucking around with the same theory kept me from pushing ahead and getting that 1 reputation per round for having the most theories published (which would have been 2 with my robe). My opponent ended up beating my by 4 or 5 points, in part because he blocked me out of selling a potion in the last round. It was a great, tight game.

Patchwork - My wife and I played a couple of games of Patchwork on Sunday morning over coffee. This is a great coffee game. We split victories, with the loser scoring in the negatives both times. Great way to start a Sunday morning.

Legends of Andor - In the early afternoon, we decided to play the second legend in Legends of Andor. This was my 5th time playing the game, but only my first time moving beyond the first legend. This one was a pretty interesting puzzle with a number of wrinkles thrown in throughout the course of the game. Prince Therald and his combat was a nice idea, but we really didn't have much chance to use him before he rode off. The Skral on the tower was a very intimidating challenge, but with the help of the witches brew (and several purchased strength points), we managed to finish him off just in time. I think what really won the game for us, though, was being lucky enough to find the witch early. If we hadn't, I don't know how we would have gotten both the herb delivered and the skral defeated. We're both enjoying the game, and will hopefully try out the third legend soon.
