Saturday night, Lou W., Ron D., Brian B, and I broke out Eclipse. We played with all the expansions: Lou/Time Race, Brian/Orion, Ron/Pirates, me/Mutagen. I had great success with the mutagen even with the poorest economy I've ever had. I got the tech that gave me more gene production, and was able to gather VP producers (I had room for extra reputation, which were each also worth more, and at the end was sending suicide ships just to get some points).

Eclipse - My wife was working on Saturday, so I had a few friends over and we played a 5 player game of Eclipse. It was 4 new players and me (I've played once before), so we played with just the human races. It was mostly because I didn't want to teach the special abilities. It was a pretty long game, about 4 and a half hours. I was on the edges of space, so only really neighboring one other person closely. I was trying to build up an engine early, and didn't do a lot of building or upgrading, and failed to research many ship upgrades, all of which were not great decisions. Around round 6 I was finally attacked by my neighbor and she pretty easily wiped all of my ships off the board. I had a good science engine going, though, and by the last round I had rebounded and built a couple of dreadnaughts with antimatter cannons and positronic computers. I betrayed my one alliance (because he had me hemmed in), and split a couple of fights with him. In the end, I did poorly, but managed to score at least close to the middle of the pack (4th place, just a few points out of both 3rd and 2nd). The winner pretty thoroughly crushed us all. Everyone had a pretty good time, I think. Not sure how quickly we'll get to play it again, but I'm hoping to get it to the table just to cement the rules for everyone.
Rating: 7.5

Dark Moon - After Eclipse, we played a quick game of Dark Moon. I was infected, and this game was going very badly for my team. Everyone was succeeding in their attempts to repair, we were passing all of the tests (no matter what I submitted). For a while the board was completely empty of damage. We managed to get a few shield damage tokens on the board, and then on my turn, I got a task that let me remove one damage and place two, so I removed an outpost damage and added two shield. The other infected happened to go after me, and his infection ability was to add damage to shields, so we managed to win. The good guys only needed one more blue cube to win the game! It's been a while since the last time I played this, but it's always a good time.
Rating: 8

NEW Gloomhaven - On Sunday, I went over to play games with some friends. This is the group I usually play campaign games and dungeon crawls with, and it's been a while since we went on an adventure. I knew they had Gloomhaven, so I watched a couple of videos before heading over, and we punched the game and played the first scenario. I played as the Cragheart; we also had the Tinker and the Mind Thief. The gameplay was interesting and challenging. I really like the way that combat works. This initial scenario was maybe a little story light, but I'm guessing that as we move forward with the campaign the story will get more interesting. We played on the 0 level which was pretty easy. We'll go back up to normal level for the next scenario. I could definitely see this game being our go to dungeon crawl for a while.

Finally, a chance to play the Eclipse: Shadow of the Rift expansion to one of my favourite games. We didn't use many expansion elements except for two new factions. Gordon (playing non-humans for the first time) played Mechanema the cyborgs who are fast at building ships and bases. I was the Shapers of Dorado from the new expansion, who can use Time Distortion for various purposes such as building ships to send back in time to an earlier turn, sending exploration teams into the future etc. Mark was the Octantis Autonomy, who warp and splice their genes to evolve new powers and abilities over the course of the game.

Mark seemed quietly to be getting on with his own thing during most of the game. I couldn't see too well the small green evolution tiles and I didn't really understand what he was doing, but I wasn't overly worried until, seemingly out of nowhere a large fleet started massing on my border. Fortunately Mark opted to invade the galactic centre first, which he took easily, but watching that battle made me realise quite how powerful he was after a few centuries (turns) of gene-spliced evolution.

Gordon wasn't very lucky in the worlds he explored near to his home territory. He built up-- as is his race's wont-- a large armada of battleship but only managed to find one ancient to fight before the penultimate turn of the game. It was very difficult for him to make many inroads into Mark's territories so I sensed his belligerent attention turning toward me.

I found that I spend a lot of time and concentration on time travel, achieving a few VP here and there, but a lot effort for not much reward. If I played Shapers of Dorado again I would be more judicious, I think, and just use a few Time Distortion effects to achieve wider objectives. Still, mainly thanks to discovering 6 discovery tiles and the powerful weapon this race starts with as default, I was reasonably confident until on the penultimate turn Gordon invaded my territory and Mark took the galactic centre. Fortunately I threw Gordon and Mark out of my territory on the last turn, thanks to possible the best sequence of dice rolls I have every rolled, despite being outgunned on all three battles. That run of luck set me a good few VPs ahead of Gordon (it had been very close before the combat) it was not to be enough against the Octantis Autonomy who held the centre and mastery of the galaxy!

Final scores (sectors+research+discoveries+combat+bonuses)
Mark (16+3+14+4+4) 41
Russell (14+0+10+10+3) 37
Gordon (12+5+7) 24

Great game, interesting new races that need a few games to understand fully how to use them (well, not for Mark, he mastered it straight away). Would be fun to try some other parts of the expansion too. Wonderful game.

Love

Eclipse
Quote:
I realy liked this game, and have been thinking about it ever since. I agree with all of the people who criticize it by saying it's a Euro game with a space theme that is maybe a bit pasted on, but I don't think that's a bad thing at all. There is theme, don't get me wrong, but if the theme isn't enough to draw you in by itself (e.g. my wife), you may still like the game, as the system and mechanisms provide plenty of strategy and interesting decisions. I think this was definitely my favorite of the month.

I really love this game. It doesn't get as high a rating as it deserves just because of the BGG rating system. Eclipse is too long and heavy for me to want to play all the time. This is a game that I have to schedule pretty far in advance, but I think it's worth it, and I think it will be a favorite for a long time.

Alchemists
Quote:
I played a 3 player game, and I really, really enjoyed it. The deduction is about the weight and feel of a simplified sudoku, so if you like sudoku you'll probably enjoy this, and if you don't, then it might not be so heavy that it bothers you. The worker placement is really interesting, too. It's Caylus-style, so everyone places and then everyone resolves. You bid (sort of) on turn order, and it can be very important. There's no traditional blocking, but someone going before you can definitely mess with your plans. And there's a lot of planning! This game would easily rate higher for me, except for the game length. It takes a couple of hours at least.

Alchemists is straight up phenomenal. I love this game. It's not my favorite, but it's definitely top 10, maybe even top 5. I never seem to get tired of it, which is unusual for me. I haven't even graduated from the apprentice rules yet! I have looked at the expansion, but it really doesn't seem like it adds anything that I'd want to include very often.

Eager to Play

Argent: The Consortium
Quote:
We all had a lot of fun with it, though, and after the first round everything seemed to click pretty well. I think everyone was just exploring the game, so the strategy was a little thin on the ground. There are 10 voters over all, and you're never going to be able to focus on what all of them wants, so it can be difficult to make yourself just pick a few and hope for the best (which may not actually be the best thing, I don't know). I really like this game, and, despite myself, I'm even curious about the expansion. I don't think it will make it to the table very often, but not because I don't want to play it. If you like big, interactive worker placement games, this is definitely worth checking out.

I'd really like to get this to the table more often. Two things are keeping it from getting played more frequently, though: table space/number of bits and game length. I can't play it at my weekly meetup, so I have to schedule it. It's competing for very limited time with my other "must schedule" games: Eclipse, Scythe, Terra Mystica... all top 10 games for me. I do like this game, though, and it will see table time.

7 Wonders Duel
Quote:
7 Wonders: Duel is a fantastic implementation that beautifully captures the experience of the original game. The card pyramids are a genius method of recreating the tension of the pick and pass card drafting, because there are absolutely those moments where you are torn between taking what you want, and hate-drafting something. On top of that, the face down cards even add to the tension because you don't want to give your opponent first crack at the mystery cards. The changes to military work very well, but the science changes are really very cool as well. This is a really good game. In time, I could see this overtaking 7 Wonders in my estimation.

I like 7 Wonders: Duel more than 7 Wonders, and I really like 7 Wonders. My wife and I have been trying to play games over coffee on the weekends, but her schedule has prevented that recently. Once we get back to that, 7 Wonders: Duel will be in the regular rotation.

Happy to Play

Carson City: Big Box

I knew I liked the idea of the game, but sometimes I just need to have it in front of me to really understand it. That proved to be the case here. I really like the way this game works. I like that you can duel over spots, so there is a course of action if you just absolutely need something that someone else took. I like that the worker placement always resolves in the same order, so you can plan around it. I like the way the buildings work with each other and the area control on the board. The western theme doesn't really appeal to my wife, but she really liked the game anyway, so that's good, too.

Has it stood the test of time? I would say yes. I like this game. I would like to play it more. It has too many bits for me to take it to the bar for my weekly meetup, though.

I really enjoyed the way the non-player company works. It definitely adds a sense of urgency to everything you're trying to accomplish. The worker placement is simple and interesting as well. All in all, I think this is a good game, and I'm looking forward to playing it with more players.

Not asking for, but enjoy

Super Motherload
Quote:
I was able to play a 3 player game this month, and I really like it. The card actions are very simple, but the tile laying is a really interesting puzzle with a lot of tough choices. The deck building is an interesting implementation, too, where you are slowly saving up to buy specific cards (you have unique decks, so there's no competition for the cards). When you buy a card, it gives you some kind of bonus: an extra action, a free card draw, the ability to duplicate a gem (effectively getting more money for free). So the timing of your purchases is important and can be set up to create some pretty epic turns. That said, that timing combined with the really tough choices of where and how to dig can lead to some pretty serious downtime.

I liked this game, and I've been tempted to buy it a couple of times. Ultimately, though, I don't think it would get played often enough to justify it.

Shakespeare
Quote:
I liked Shakespeare. I'd call it tableau building with a little bit of card drafting and bidding (for turn order). The drafting is interesting, especially because you can't just take whatever you want. You have to think about whether or not you'll be able to pay the card's cost at the end of the game. The actions that the cards give you are pretty simple; they're going to let you improve some aspect of your production. I wanted to focus on one thing, but I discovered that you can't quite do that. There are some things you just have to do, or else you can see your hard won points trickle down the drain. I had a lot of fun with this one.

Oh look, another game that I want to play more often. I need to introduce my wife to this game, but the opportunity has not come up yet.

Quote:
Indigo is the game that I wanted Tsuro to be. It's quick to learn and play, and we had a good time with it. It's a perfect game for non-gamers, but I had fun with it, too, especially as we got deeper into the game and more of our tile placements were connecting longer paths.

This is pretty much the only "build routes to get pieces off the board" game that I need or want. It's much better than Tsuro. It's a situational game, though (light, 4 or fewer players), so it's not going to hit the table very often.

Apotheca
Quote:
I'm not normally big on abstracts, which I think Apotheca definitely is, but there was something appealing about the sort of chess/connect four/hidden information combination here that appealed to me. At this point, I've only played the 4 player team variant, and I really wouldn't recommend that at all, but even in that game, I could see how it would be an interesting 2 player game.

Another game I need to introduce to my wife. I think this will end up being a good coffee game.

The Undercity: An Iron Kingdoms Adventure Board Game
Quote:
It's a pretty run of the mill dungeon crawl that isn't bringing anything new to the table. That said, this sin't the kind of game that really needs innovation to make it worth playing. It's a pure coop, which is my preferred way to play these games. The AI is designed very similarly to Galaxy Defenders, only simpler (and a bit easier). I don't think I would pay the current CSI asking price for it, but if you like these games and you get a chance to play it, I think it's worth it.

We only played one more game in this campaign, and it continued to be fun and fine. I don't know why we haven't gotten back to it. I imagine we will at some point.

Not going to play again anytime soon

Tides of Time
Quote:
It's a fine micro card drafting game. It has some interesting decisions, mostly focused on paying attention to what your opponent is doing, but it doesn't come close to replacing Fairy Tale or either of the 7 Wonders implementations.

I still think this needs to be more portable. I might even go so far as to make my own pocket version. Without that portability, though, it's not going to get played over other 2 player options in my collection.

1) Why you like the listed game

I like space games. I've only played it twice but I can see why it's rated highly. It's extremely well-designed...once you learn the iconography there's not much you have to refer back to the rulebook for. (In the base game anyway...I've not played any of the expansions.) I want to play it more!

2) The game you want to acquire with the gift certificate and why

That's a tough one. I think my top two wants right now are Roll Player and Terraforming Mars (space game!) but I think they're both out of stock with most retailers or terribly overpriced right now.

3) Your favorite place to get games

I wish I could support my FLGSs more...but I have to say Amazon. The free Prime shipping is such a boon.

4) The last new-to-you game you played and what you thought of it

Today I played Brew Crafters. One of the players had serious analysis paralysis and I'm trying not to let my annoyance color my impression of the game itself...but we played that game for almost 4 hours and they knew my gaming window today was limited. shake I was tolerant of the downtime early on when we were all still learning the rules and such, but near the end I just wanted it to...well, end. I think I would give the game another try though.
