PANZER EXPANSION 4
(This one also needs its own game entry...)

Current Preorders: 418 (+45) 3 months on P500

Preorder Price (List Price): $44 ($65)

Designers: James M. Day & Fernando Sola Ramos

Player count: 2 players

This expansion set includes the most significant French forces that saw action on the Western front in 1940. Also included are the German forces that invaded France and the Low Countries, flanked the Maginot Line, and finally pushed on into France. The playbook includes rules for special units, new optional rules for Staggered Initiative, Command Span, and others, 12 riveting scenarios (including 2 historical scenarios depicting the fierce battle for Stonne), and unit summaries for the French and German units.

In addition to all the other features included in this expansion, there are two new exciting extras. The Panzer Leader rules and the respective 7/8” Leader counters of various enlisted and commissioned ranks for all forces – French, German, US, British, and Soviet; and the unique hull and turret damage rules and the respective 5/8” counters.

The TO&Es booklet includes details for the French and German forces covering the 1940 period, including the five major divisions from the cavalry and infantry arms of the French Army, including the Mechanized Light Division (DLM – Division Légère Méchanique) and the Armored Division (DCR – Division Cuirassée de Réserve). German forces include panzer, motorized infantry and infantry divisions, as well as the Grossdeutschland (mot) Infantry Regiment.

Finally, this expansion includes the next 4 double-sided geomorphic mapboards, modeling the terrain found in the French countryside including 2 historical maps depicting the terrain in and around Stonne. Add these to the geomorphic mapboards from expansions 1, 2 & 3 for added play and many possible battle combinations.

Playing against myself again. Still learning the basic game. Might make a die to match the commands in order to have some randomness on one side. So far the Germans have won, because the Russians stop being able to hit anything about halfway through the game.

Finally dug this one out to learn the rules.

Played scenario 1 with just the Basic Rules (i.e. vehicle only).

It has 11 PzIVG against 10 T34/76 on the right half of the map.

The Germans won on Turn 10 when they eliminated the last T34.

I learned some lessons playing this scenario.

1) You don't need to rush. The VP locations were two bridges and a ford between both forces.

2) Cover is important. I was rushing to the VP and to do that I stayed in Clear terrain or on paths. Once the forces came into contact everyone was in the open and easier to hit.

Setting up scenario 2 which is another Basic Rules game with a variety of units on each side. The Germans get Panthers, PzIVH's and a STuG IIIG while the Russians get T34/85's, SU-85's and a SU-100.

Ok, here we go with a classic rule from a rule read through last night with my mate Garry. There were a couple of brow-furrowers, but one stood out as a great example "4.1.4.1.7 Woods Hexes - Note that vehicles in Light Woods or Woods hexes are actually at the ground level of the terrain not up at the maximum Height of the terrain."

I set up scenario 6 of Panzer last night, my first real combined arms scenario, which includes vehicles, infantry, and artillery. I'm playing with advanced rules but no optionals.

Overview of the situation at the end of turn 1:

The Soviets chose to entirely avoid the village where the Germans had sited a 75mm anti-tank gun, protected by several squads of Panzerfaust-toting infantry. Instead they hugged the opposite flank of the German line:

The Germans began trying to adjust their defenses (though there was little they could do on turn 1, with so many units on Overwatch), and move their vehicles into hull-down positions:

The 88 gunners on top of the hill are itching to light up some tanks. Not sure how long they can survive up there, once spotted, though, with no cover.

I can already see that not using the hidden units rules is a significant disadvantage to the Germans in this scenario. The Soviets knew exactly where the German gun was and how to avoid it, allowing them to advance rapidly onto the board with no casualties and bypass a good chunk of the German defense. (Obviously playing solitaire they (I) would still know what each hidden unit marker contained, but I'd try to pretend that they didnt'!)

Will continue the game over the weekend.

Start of turn 4 of Panzer scenario 6, after fixing my set up.

Overall situation, things are not looking great for the Germans:

Due to flubbed rolls, the overwatch of the Stugs/Anti-tank gun in the woods failed to do anything as the T-34s rolled over the hill/around the hedges. Now they are in deep, with T-34s ahead and on one flank and SU-76s on the other:

Meanwhile the German defenders in the village are being pummeled by the Soviet pre-planned artillery fire:

This stuff seems super deadly, and has already rubbled 2 (of 7) building hexes in the first 2 (of 5) turns of firing. Wooden buildings provide very little protection for the German defenders - I should have paid more attention to the building types during set up.

Hopefully the German arty will be able to get into the mix next turn.

The one ray of sunshine for the Germans, one of the Marders has lined up a nice flanking position on the SU-76s, one of which was already taking out by a lucky HE shell from the 88 on the hill:

Set up another Panzer scenario the other night, scenario Scenario 13: Twilight: Silesia, 1945 from Expansion 1:

After playing out a turn or so, I suffered a bit of a crisis of Panzer faith. See, there is this thing called troop quality in the game, which ranges from Green to Elite. This affects all sorts of things, from the number of commands a formation can use, to command range, to attack modifiers which can vary depending on the range band.

In all the scenarios I've played so far, both sides were seasoned, which is the middle quality and has no modifiers to attacks. In this scenario, the German quality ranges from Green to Veteran (across 4 categories), all with different modifiers and command values. Oh and by the way there is *nothing* on the counters to indicate quality.

So now every time I need to act with a unit there's an additional two-step lookup - what was the quality of this unit again? Okay and given that, let's look in the table and see what the modifiers are.

This compounds an issue that was already bothering me, that there are only 5 different infantry counter images (squad, half squad, guys with binoculars, machine gun, mortar) to cover all possible equipment and size combinations. e.g. a Seasoned Recon SMG squad will look exactly the same as a Green Infantry squad. Again one has to keep referring back to paper notes to remember who is what.

Sigh. I decided to take down the scenario and try a different game instead. I enjoy the narrative this game creates, but this aspect of it is user-unfriendly.

If this gets a reprint this year, should I get it instead of MBT? The complexity level looks about as terrifying, but surely can't be as bad given that the technology of 1945 was nowhere near as advanced as that of 1987.

I love games where you can "smell the cordite", where there is enough detail to easily suspend disbelief and imagine what's taking place before you on the paper battlefield is entirely plausible. You can make decisions and see the effect within the "paper time machine". It helps when the detail is well researched and condensed into an intuitive and well-paced set of rules that don't get in the way of the action. Quite a design challenge, and the battlefields of game design are littered with casualties. Panzer is not one of them. It's polished and feels fresh, despite (or maybe because of?) being a very traditional wargame. The data cards are a thing of beauty and now you can know just how deadly the "88" really was.
