Unplayed.

Another Splotter (like Food Chain Magnate). Plays out as one massive logistics puzzle, from what I hear. Uses geese as a resource so it has that going for it!

Also own the &cetera expansion.

When we managed to start up a small train games group locally a couple of months ago there was one of the people in that group that I didn't know in advance because he was very new to playing boardgames. Only 18 months he's played and he's already into 18xx, Splotters etc. He just hasn't played that many yet. So I promised to teach him how to play Roads and Boats. I'm by no means experienced myself either as this was only my third play of it. The first one that wasn't the recommended two-player start setup. We chose another also quite simple and where both ends are identical so he could copy my moves initially to get going.

Last time I played R&B I waited for too long to get more donkeys and never got enough transporters so this time I chose to build the obligatory woodcutter and sawmill and then have the donkey breed twice the niext two rounds so I had more options early. My opponent soon lost his way in the logistical puzzle and ended up building stuff he didn't need and having his donkeys and resources in places they shouldn't be when he needed them somewhere else. For me it was the opposite. Of course I made errors but they were small and I trimmed my engine perfectly so I could both get to where I wanted fairly quickly and have enough resources on my home tile so I could control the speed of the monument building if I wanted to speed it up. Perhaps I should have ended it a bit earlier so as not to trounce my opponent completely - it ended 405-125 points. I talked to him the following day and he said he was still thinking about what to do different the next time so it wasn't as bad as I feared.

The board seen from my opponent's side at the end of the game:

Scorecard for the Week/Month/Year as of 17Jun2017:

6/15/233 plays of 6/13/125 total games, with 0/1/20 expansions employed.
Plays with 6/11/64 distinct opponents.

2/6/22 games acquired (plus 0/1/12 expansions.) - BLUE and Green.
0/0/13 games sold/traded (plus 0/0/2 expansions.)
0/0/20 games ordered (plus 0/0/10 expansions.)
Orders for 3 games and 0 expansions still outstanding.

With kids:
1x _7⅓_ Terraforming Mars - Son #1 caught on really well in his first game. And I enjoyed playing it: more for my opponent, though, than for the game.

At this point, I'm pretty convinced that the game isn't going to go up a tick in rating. There's too little interaction, I think; and while it's a pleasant multiplayer-(mostly)-solitaire, I think I enjoy things with a bit more interference.

1x _7⅔_ BLUE [New!] - A bit, I said! This one (and it's color-iffic siblings Green and RED) are really subtle things where one needs to carefully consider the ramifications both of the move one is making, and the set of moves one didn't make. I'm not confident this is truly better than Green: but I enjoyed it more. The kingmakery balancing was less foreground; and the scoring (even though likely as ferocious as the other in the final judgment) less obviously fragile.

And, of course, we're not remotely playing it at a high level. But it didn't have that "and now, everything you do is fraught with failure" feel that the other did.

1x _7⅓_ Green [New!] - This is nasty. And hard. And rather chaotic, too; at least when the players are as much a set of novices as we absolutely are.

It's quite possible that this could be played at a high level. But it reminds me - a lot - of the sense of Aztec: where I've never yet played it with three because it demands competence from all the players before it truly works. This one just throws one in the deep end, and lets the swings of chaotic fortune rule, while taunting one that better play (all around) will take work.

With the Lunch@work group (Monday last week):
1x _7_ Hansa - Both my opponents played significantly better than I did. And since one of them was Jeff, y'all aren't finding that terribly surprising. Logan played really well too. There were six of us - and rather than playing a single game, we chose to divide into two threes: which worked well. I think there are more short three-player games I really like than short six-player games!

With the Wednesday night gang:
1x _7⅓_ Saturn - A little player-summoning frivolity while waiting for our third. I love the aesthetics of this one; and am delighted to see it on the table. It plays quite nicely with 2, too; even if I've also enjoyed it with more.

1x _7⅔_ Roads & Boats - I'm not terribly good at this one. And it feels more like work than I really want in a game. But it's got a truly epic scope to it that other games would dearly love to emulate.

This one suggested that rushing the wonder wall might actually be feasible: in that one might be able to score enough points there before anyone else gets their first coin - let alone a stock certificate. As it was, one player rushed significantly, but not exclusively, and the game went on a half-dozen turns longer than they wanted. Fun to see it both as game and logistics puzzle: our first few games noticed the latter far more than the former.

Owned-and-unplayed: 1 (+2/-2) - BLUE and Green arrived and were played.
Owned-and-played-once: 95 (+2/-0) - BLUE and Green were played once.

Outlook for the week: Wednesday lunch games this week; plus the Wednesday night gang for good measure. Likely a play with the kids (though Kogge is implausible.) And lots of driving to San José and back: son #2 is doing a Music day camp there.

Another game I acquired for Chris. At least to hear him tell it, he claims he told me about it before I ordered it, and he probably did - or he sent me a link to watch a play through. We only got to play it once at Geekway, but he made me promise we'd get it to the table again before GenCon, so he wouldn't forget how to play. Probably his favorite Splotter; definitely more of a fan of it than FCM or TGZ.

It took me a while to get into a game Saturday morning. Nearly played Warhammer 40k: Conquest, the now defunct living card game from FFG with Dan, which would have been nice, but instead Dan and I joined Stompy for a game of Roads & Boats.

I think the last time I played this was with Stompy, which was also the last time he played it, and that was at least 5 years ago. Going into it, I thought Stompy was more familiar with the rules. Consequently, it took us about 1hr+(!) to fumble through them and get everyone up to speed. Once we started, though, we managed to finished our game in less than 3hrs. Dan pulled off a surprising come from behind win, but it was a close finish all around.

I really enjoyed this one. I liked it much more than I remembered, and I look forward to trying to find a copy (now, or during its next reprint). Mechanically it’s really a simple game, and if I play it again soon I could easily teach it in less than 15-20mins. Yet the optimization decisions are consistently quite opaque. Another cool/unique Splotter. Having played 7 Splotter titles, this one is probably my 3rd (or maybe 2nd) favorite Splotter game.

After a lot of overtime and not being very good at taking my vaction, I decided to take today off and stay at home. I just finished making the first stage of my butter chicken and the meat is now marinading in a lovely curry-cashew goo now. We have guests from Heidelberg the next four days – Philipp Klarmann (who came up with the idea for Greenland. I translated the rules into Danish and helped with some local knowledge from up there so that’s how I got to know him) and his wife so Butter Chicken is the welcome dinner. And Lærke’s favourite. Time to move on to what I played last week now and do the dishes. I found a dirt cheap 1st edition copy of Sword of Rome but it also smelled a bit musty, had a dished box lid and didn’t have the board. I managed to improve on the first two things and have ordered a mounted map from GMT so it’s going to work out. The other interesting piece of news (apart from England sending the Aussies back home in the Champions Trophy two days ago!) is that I just booked a night and morning at a Brown Bear hide in northeastern Estonia for Lærke and me in August. I look very much forward to that!

9   1846: The Race for the Midwest
My new train games group got together for our second 4 player game of 1846 on Monday since we had a day off due to Whitsun. This time we already cut off one hour of playing time so it was now down to 4 hours. The initial drafting of the minor companies was pretty interesting and not only because most of us had very little idea about what we were doing. Last time the two minors that include trains weren’t used to much effect and turned out to be a bit expensive so we were surprised when one player picked up both and really used them to great effect for himself. Unfortunately for him though he made some mistakes that pulled back his early lead and made it possible for of us to catch up with him. I got a couple of minors that give income but decided to start up Grand Trunk which meant I didn’t have much use of the two this time. I set the share price a bit higher than the rest so I had more money in the company to buy up trains. Being last in turn order also meant that I could buy a level 2 train in my first OP. This meant I was able to make more money – but I also had to spend more money to buy more shares in my company. One player had a pretty bad game but the rest of us were quite close. The top two of us extremely close as a matter of fact: I won by 12$ only! It looks like we’ll be able to play this approx. once a month which is nice.

7   Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries
We had started playing 1846 at 09.30 so we also finished early which meant Lærke and I could also play a couple of games in the afternoon. We stayed within the train universe for the first game. This time I went more aggressively into it and blocked off Lærke several times. I was lucky she didn’t do the same because it was only on my last two turns I could complete two links in Norway that were essential for three of my tickets. I won with a huge margin. After three games of it I have to say it was a very good suggestion from you Rich! It’s perfect as a Sunday morning game.

 7   Carcassonne: The Castle
Afterwards we wanted to try The Castle with our new crafted copy of the unpublished expansion I had the Game Crafter make from Knizia’s pdfs. The tiles looked really nice but I was a bit disappointed to find out that they had used thinner cardboard than the original. We draw tiles from a bag so it isn’t that big a think. But if you want to cheat you can. The expansion is fine. It adds a few new things to score and a new type of building. The two new meeple types remind me a bit about those in Traders and Builders for the original game.

 7   Neolithic
A friend of mine just handed in his Master’s Thesis two weeks ago so I invited him out for a beer on Friday since I hadn’t seen much of him over the last several months. We had a very nice couple of hours in the bar and also managed to play a game of Neolithic. He’s a rather experienced WP player and always seems to do very well in his first plays of something. This was no exception but my knowledge of the cards and combos meant I was able to beat him with a few points despite the fact that I was forced to focus on a broader strategy than I would have preferred initially.

 8   Roads & Boats
Yesterday Lærke and I spent some hours cleaning the apartment. It needed it. As a treat we played our second play of Roads and Boats afterwards. We decided to set up the 2-player beginner map again since we didn’t feel that comfortable with the game after a long break. Last time I learnt that controlling the end game through the wonder was important so I quickly built some bricks in the shorter lower layers of it and set up an engine that could churn out cheap resources around my home tile. I had found a place downriver where I could set up my gold to stock engine so I decided to go heavier into the water than the land transporters. I made an error of course and upgraded to steamship yard much too early without having the resources necessary to build the ships so I stalled a bit when I was supposed to speed up and was forced to not add more bricks to the wonder for quite a few rounds. Lærke on the other hand got her lorries and her stock factory and seeing I didn’t lay any bricks decided she should. In the end she won by 20 points despite thinking she had no idea why she won (she said) and didn’t know what to do differently to improve. She complained a bit about not being able to do all the things she wanted but also said she’d like to play it more often to get to know it better. And when I went to bed with her already asleep she mumbled ‘I beat you in the game’ in her sleep so I’m quite sure she’s interested in playing it again!

Games that left my collection this month: In the Shadow of the Emperor.

Games that entered my collection this month: American Rails, .

Unplayed games in my collection: Tahuantinsuyu, 1860: Railways on the Isle of Wight, Automobile, Falling Sky: The Gallic Revolt Against Caesar, Stephenson’s Rocket, Splatter SHOOT, Himalaya, American Rails.

I love logistics so I shelled out a moderately exhorbitant amount of money for this one back at the end of last year. It was a new in shrink copy, but was missing a couple of punch boards so it took a little while for our free replacement components to arrive from the Netherlands. Then due to the length and weight of this one, it sat on the shelf for a bit longer. We finally got it to the table this past weekend.

The basics of gameplay are using transports (donkeys at the beginning but you can tech up to trucks) and water transports to move goods around to build buildings which produce more goods, etc... You can build bricks to a common wonder of the world to earn points throughout the game and then some goods are worth points at the end of the game. The main ways to score points are getting to the point where you can produce gold, coins, and stock certificates. You build roadways to improve your movement network to increase your productivity.

We loved it. I was a little concerned that I would really enjoy it and my wife would find it lackluster, but she really liked it. We played it very friendly toward each other and basically ignored walls and "stealing" from each other. Basically any resources not on transports do not belong to anyone and can be grabbed by other players regardless of which building they were built by. I thought it worked very well for two players and allowed enough time to feel like you accomplished something by building but did not overstay its welcome. It did take roughly 3-3.5 hours to play so it is a longer and heavier game, but we enjoy those in general. The rules were not overly difficult and a player aid found on BGG and watching Heavy Cardboard's video playthrough made it easy to learn. This one has real potential to become my favorite game (hence being okay with paying a decent amount for it originally). We will definitely be playing this some more in the days to come. Highly recommended if you can find a copy. This has me looking into more logistics games as well.

Hello from Indiana!

Welp, the insanity of May is finally over. John Company's files have been submitted to the factory, and I've made the move from Texas back to northern Indiana. Over the summer I'll be defending/submitting my dissertation (long story), working on a few game designs, and starting to apply for jobs. Right now our areas of interest are all over the place, from NC to Minneapolis to Seattle. I'm doing my best not to have any firm ideas until I get this darn dissertation off my desk though.

So far the stay in Indiana has been lovely. I've got a nice office space and it's been nice to be so close to family. In the evenings I've even managed to start playing games again. Roads and Boats has been a favorite. Last night we played with three players on the Sea of Sine. My favorite way to play R&B is to use a map one size smaller than the number of players. We had ourselves a brutal game with very low final scores. No one made it to coins.

This weekend I'm going to be teaching 1889 which I hope will be the start of regular 18xx play over the summer. I'm also looking forward to playing a lot of Triumph and Tragedy which lends itself to stormy summer evenings here in the midwest.

Comments: Players work to develop their civilization. The emphasis in the game is logistical transport as you bring goods to producers to make new goods. But beware, the only thing you own is what is on your transporters, and anyone can use any production facility, or pick up any goods left behind.

Condition: Smoke-free home. Unused/unplayed (but this version was not distributed in shrinkwrap). Box shows some shelfwear which includes whitening on edges and corners and the top/bottom have some dishing.

Edition: English. Splotter. 3rd edition (second printing).

Shipping: I will cover the full cost to ship to the contiguous US (48 states). I will cover the first $8.15 to ship anywhere else. I cannot ship anywhere else. Insurance will be required for any non-US shipment. (Balance, if any, can be paid via Amazon.com GC in US$).
Shipping from USA zip 50325.

Sweetener(s): None.

Important Trade Notes:
I have over 600 Positive trade references on BGG, so you can confidently add my offers to your Want List; however, please do not add any of my items to your WL until you have read Details on Game Condition.

Note: I leave POSITIVE feedback for the Receiver (aka Null Sender) in MT transactions unless there is a serious attitude problem that causes a total meltdown. You should too.

Note: I will not be able to get shipments packaged up until two weeks after the trade is confirmed on BGG after the close of the MT. If you cannot wait, please do not put any of my items on your Want List as I do not want to disappoint you with a delayed delivery.
