User summary

Adventure Maximum is a generic rules system using d10 for randomization.

Task resolution

The basic task resolution mechanic first subtracts a difficulty rank that was defined by the GM from a character's skill rank. The result is referenced on the Master Success Chart. The chart shows the maximum number that the player may roll on a d10 to be successful. A result of zero means that either a critical success or a fumble occurred. This is determined by a second d10 roll. A result below or equal to the character's luck level means a critical success, any other roll is a fumble.

Character creation

Character creation starts with selecting a tech level for the character which gives him some basic starting skills typical for that level (e.g. hunting for a low level or car driving for a higher level). The second step is to select an expertise level that shows how experienced a character is from the start. Usually, tech level and expertise level are decided on by the GM.

Next the character's 13 attributes (including magic and wealth) are all given a starting rank and the player may distribute bonus points depending in the expertise level.

Every character starts with a few default skills and a maximum number of skills which is determined by the Intuition attribute. He selects the skills appropriate for his character and the tech level from a skill list. Depending on the maximum skill number, a character divides those skills in primary, secondary and tertiary skills. All skills from one category have the same skill rank, which is again based on the expertise level.

There are also special abilities, advantages and disadvantages that are bought from a point pool, or, in the case of disadvantages, yield additional points.

Every character has some secondary statistics like a base combat value, a knockback rank (for resisting knockbacks), resistances, movement speed, etc. The player also chooses a Creed which is some kind of alignment (hero, mercenary, villainous, etc.), and fills in a personality profile that ranks 20 behaviors from very weak to extreme, and 15 attitutes from "love" to "hate".

Combat

Attacks use the basic task resolution mechanic described above. A successful attack causes damage of one of four types The damage points are reduced by the armor value for the damage type. The damage that exceeds the armor value translates into trauma levels. Trauma levels range from 0 to 10 (10 being death). Every trauma level has a negative modifier that is applied to all actions. A successful attack also means that one of 32 hit locations is determined by a d100 roll. Hit locations may add to the trauma level and the trauma suffered also may cause side effects depending on the hit location.

Adventure Maximum provides various optional combat rules for special situations (martial arts, explosions, vehicle combat, etc.)
